One thing to improve life

Happy New Year.

Going into 2025 I'm looking for things to improve my life. I'm just wondering what one thing have you done that has seriously improved your life?

I'm not looking for marriage/children, things like that. Simple things like taking a regular vitamin, starting yoga, drinking more water, learning to say no, creative writing, decluttering, going vegan...

To be more honest. I realised I said white lies all the time to please other people and ended up doing things I didn't want to do.

This, totally this.

Learning to say no and not caring when the inevitable backlash happens - the block button is a wonderful invention.

Mine will be to try and work on/find some help for procrastination. It doesn't matter if it'll make my life easier, if it's something for me....I just can't force myself to do anything until the absolute last minute and it is starting to have an impact on my life, especially at work....
I have this dream that if I can do something about my procrastinating, everything else will fall in to place. Will see if I can find any self help books on amazon and then look in to therapy maybe

One thing that really helped me.woth this was to write lists of things that needed to be done. But fairly detailed lists so, say, if I'm cleaning the house, I'll break each room down into tasks - bedroom - put clothes away, do laundry, dust and polish, vacuum.

Then tick of each item as I've done it. If I do setting that wasn't on the list, I add it on and immediately cross it off.

I always start with the easy wins. People often advise doing the big jobs first but I can't do that because all I can see are the number of jobs rather than the time required to do them. So I start with the quick easy wins and then I only have the big jobs to do.

It helps with the putting things off until the last minite because you start to see little things that can he done on your way to do something else or how you can double up the time. It feels less overwhelming and there is a sense of satisfaction (and relief!) when you've done something.

I find this works for home and work 👍

Pomodoro technique is v good for procrastination.

Lobstercrisps · 31/12/2024 10:17

Take magnesium glycinate about 6pm. It stops my evening restless legs and I sleep like a log.

Not holland and Barrett, a proper one from amazon. I use new leaf.

Spectre8 · 31/12/2024 10:19

I no longer get stressed about anything. Sure things annoy me or even piss me off but I limit how long I feel like that, decide what is it I can do to just move on from it.

Best things I've ever done for myself. A calmer drama free life. It's quite eye opening to then listen to friends and other people and what they stress about..half the time I'm thinking so what, its no big deal not worth the stress or ruining your mood and ur day over.

I prefer to use thY time and energy to do things thay make me happy

NeedToChangeName · 31/12/2024 10:19

Pomodoro technique is useful to tackle procrastination. Set a timer for 15 mins. However ghastly the task, you can make yourself do it for 15 mins. And then, once you've started it, it's usually easier to continue

Will give it another go... tried a few years ago, even have a timer stashed away somewhere. I probably gave up to easily when I tried it x

MyLoyalEagle · 31/12/2024 10:28

and eating more protein.

Same here. I've squandered most of this long break & now kicking myself.

Cookiecrumblepie · 31/12/2024 10:48

Get a black bin bag, walk around and throw stuff away. Just get rid! Makes a huge difference if you do this every month

I just use timer on mobile phone. If 15 mins feels too long, you could try 10 mins instead, or even 5

FastFood · 31/12/2024 10:59

Mine is always: No phone in the bedroom at night. Such a big impact for very very low effort. Mind you, I don't do it all the time, but when I do, it really makes a difference on the quality of my sleep.

Lentilweaver · 31/12/2024 11:00

I hate housework but listening to good podcasts makes me slightly more able to do it.
I have a work report today to read. Am bribing myself by promising a half hour of my favourite podcast when done. Currently loving British Scandal.
Also eat the frog. Do the boring stuff in the morning.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 31/12/2024 11:01

Mine would be getting more sleep! That’s my NY resolution.

Zanatdy · 31/12/2024 11:01

Join a walking group. Mine is awesome

Mine too!

If I need to go to bed at 8pm, I shall do rather than telling myself I'm going at 10 and falling asleep on the sofa!

Sorry, meant to tag MyLoyalEagle

If you're doing this, hidden sugars really are the ones tp look put for. I don't just mean the maltose, dextrose, corn syrup hidden sugars that people think about but even things like how many cups of tea you drink because the lactose carb count adds up quickly!

NearlyNewHip · 31/12/2024 11:37

On thing I can do again and works quite well in response to the pp with the bin bag is to just get rid (any way, asda charity bin, rubbish, gifting...) of one thing a day. Anything. Starts off easy but after a few months you start to see a difference and change your mentality a bit. And one thing a day is not too intimidating x

FuckItItsFine · 31/12/2024 11:40

Towards the end of last year I cut my hair from bra length to an above shoulder bob. It’s made me feel fantastic! I didn’t realise how much my long hair was cramping my style. It’s so much easier for me to wash and style now (slightly wavy, scrunch and air dry).

This has plagued me my whole life. I absolutely hate it but cannot seem to thwart it. It is absolutely awful.

I will do ANYTHING other than what I need to be doing. Daydreaming, scrolling, dithering. Sometimes I think because I've always managed to pull it off, the shit has not hit the fan, it's just ingrained but I'd love to change.

I've read books, implemented techniques, been mindful, watched ted talks but it wins over everything in the end.

Will watch it tomorrow but not today!!!! Deadlines looming. Have the timer set for one hour bursts, then coffee and scrolling until coffee finished (I have a lot of milk so about 15 mins)
I agree, when I have to I can work like the devil on amphetamines, so have always just about gotten away with it but the anxiety is frigging awful
