With pic - to throw these odd socks in the bin?

A carrier bag full. I swear some have been there for years!
I'm fed up of this soul destroying task

Shall I bin them after another try at matching? I'm fully at the bottom of my washing piles.

Is there a supernatural being causing this?

Ps I used to only get similar socks but then someone got one of my ds’ Simpsons socks for Christmas and another ds socks with days of the week on them and both made such a big deal of the socks I felt guilty (and then started buying colours for myself too!). Hilarious thing was most of my relatives thought my original idea was great and bought all dark coloured socks just as I changed over!

theduchessofspork · 30/12/2024 23:52

I’d chuck the lot now

One of the top bits of life advice I read and followed was buy socks in two or three colours or designs only. That way you have 5 or 6 of each type, and you no longer worry about matching, you just chuck them in the draw en masse and pick up two the same each day.

A small victory over domestic irritation and v satisfying

This was me for 38 years.

Then I moved in with DH, he took over the washing and he never loses a single sock. Ever.

I don’t know how he does it. I suspect witchcraft.

Impossible.

You know he’s just proactively binning the odds before they have a chance to find their friends or multiply, right?

SomethingUniqueThisTime · 30/12/2024 23:58

A few months ago I discovered why we have so many odd socks. If DH finds one of his socks has a hole or the elastic has gone slack he throws it away but he keeps the other one! Why on earth he did that I cannot fathom - after much discussion he has agreed to now throw both away. Still makes me shake my head in disbelief at the hours I must have wasted seeking out a partner for those single socks.

Honestly, he’s not. I’d know if I lost any of mine, they’re all snazzy.

It’s his superpower.

They must be returned to the universe.

Keep some in your handbag so that when you visit someone's house you can surreptitiously hide them when no one is looking. Stuffed down the back of a radiator, down the back of a sofa, thrown in a laundry basket etc.

Genius!
It's so appealing that I may even do it!

I buy the same black socks from one shop every year, so they are all the same.

nodramaplz · 31/12/2024 00:26

They are stuck inside your duvet covers 🤣

Neptunesgiraffe · 31/12/2024 00:31

I've found that kwwping a very clear photo of the socks you're throwing away is helpful. I had a large bag of odd socks knocking about for a year or so. After a final check in the laundry basket, under the beds down the side of the wardrobe, I chucked out the bag. It was a lovely feeling. But within a couple of weeks odd socks started appearing again. If you have a photo of the ones you've got rid of, you can cross check it to see if you've thrown it's pair away. If you have you can throw away the newly found sock immediately.

Stupid Marks and Sparks change their Women’s Multipack Black Socks design regularly so my “stick to one type of sock” plan doesn’t work like it did when I was younger.

I don’t match socks for people over 12 years old, just my own. Theirs - if not put in the mesh bag I gave each of them for the purpose - get put on the top of their washing pile unpaired. They can sort themselves out.

Toddlerteaplease · 31/12/2024 00:37

I just wear odd socks now.

These ones have stayed plain black for many years. These are the right length for me but may be low for some.

I had a massive pile like this once , I put all ths black in one pile , pink in another, white etc and then tried to pair up in each bundle and I got it sorted within 15 mins, otherwise I'd just bin them if it's too much hassle

Butteredtoast55 · 30/12/2024 21:57

Are your loved ones deliberately wearing unmatched pairs? I know it's a thing for some kids (although it would freak me out).

One of mine buys sets of trainers in different colours and wears odd trainers out… 💁

If they're all washed, try finding a charity that takes scraps

My local BHF takes clean rags and scraps as long as they're clearly labelled

The charity would literally get a couple of pennies tho as rag rate is so low due to massive surplus of discarded / donated clothing. It's ending up polluting waterways and coastlines in other countries 😥It's shocking to see/ Google

Ladybyrd · 31/12/2024 08:12

I'm waiting to get to the bottom of my laundry pile before I bin a whole Sainsburys bag full. If you have reached that point, they have to go!

YellowPixie · 31/12/2024 08:14

Recycle them. But yes, start from afresh.

My DH puts the worn out one in the bottom of the wardrobe and the OK one in his drawer. I only discovered this arrangement once we'd been living together for 15 years and decided to clean out his wardrobe. I don't know what he thought was going to happen to the worn out ones he was keeping.

We used to buy just the same sort but it led to a horrible weekly matching exercise where stretched-ness, cuff looseness, washed out-Ness etc all had to be optimised. Now we have coloured toes and life is infinitely better.

We also have minimal sock levels so a lost sock is more quickly and easily traced (they fall behind the dryer or go into duvet covers here).

BogRollBOGOF · 31/12/2024 08:37

On the Sort Your Life Out programme, there is virtually always a bag of odd socks loitering optomistically to be reunited with their mates.

I have sections in my sock drawer and keep an odd sock zone which is useful for uniting socks that washed seperately. I do intermittently go through it for any long term lost causes.

With the DCs, they own a school and casual set each with many multiples. The critical bit is that at the changing of a size or general replacement is to ruthlessly root out all the old ones. DS1 has lovely thick "comfort socks" that were in good nick at sizing up time and I managed to pass on a bag of those to another family. DS2's were not suitable for further use!

I have got an "odd sock" that hid in a sleeping bag for a number of years while its mates were faded from miles of running/ walking/ mud/ washing, and my brightly coloured fresh renegade sock looks far too bright amongst its mates 😂

Cryingatthegym · 31/12/2024 08:38

Best thing I ever did was bin all of my kid's socks and buy them loads of identical pairs.

NoOneKnowsWhoYouAre · 31/12/2024 10:00

About 14 years ago, feeling totally overwhelmed by the amount of clean washing and odd socks I had, I packaged the lot up and put all 3 bags into the charity bins. The feeling of release was amazing!

Member984815 · 31/12/2024 10:14

If they look enough alike pair them up , I burn any stray or holey ones

Motheranddaughter · 31/12/2024 18:22

I threw a bag of odd socks into a rag bag recycling bin today and bought 8 new psirs

I feel disproportionally happy about it 🤣
