To use the council bin at the end of the street?

I cleared up some waste from the street- a mixture of leaves, rubbish and bits of tarmac gravel.
This was not my garden waste, it was from trees up the street and other people’s litter.
If it was just leaves I wouldn’t have minded putting it in my own green waste bin, but it wasn’t suitable for that, so I put it in the big council bin at the end of the street.

A lady who was walking past with her dog at the time wasn’t too happy - she said the bin is for dog shit.(it is not one of those small dog shit bins)

I don’t think she has more right to use the bin for dog shit than I do to use it for rubbish I’ve cleared up from the street. AIBU?

The dog bins are emptied and incinerated. The bits you’ve put in there could be hazardous if incinerated. So yes, YABU.

BobbyBiscuits · 30/12/2024 14:17

If it's not a shit bin then she's mistaken.

Ablondiebutagoody · 30/12/2024 14:18

Depends whether the bin is only for shit or not. If yes, YABU. If no, you're not. Post a pic of the bin.

OttersAreMySpiritAnimal · 30/12/2024 14:24

Councils have guidance on this. Where I live, if I do a litter pick on my road I would be expected to put that waste in my wheelie bin, not in a public bin. It's a stupid rule but they must have their reasons for it.

WoollyRosebud · 30/12/2024 14:32

I did similar to the OP and encountered one of the council street cleaners when I was putting the bag of rubbish in the council bin. I was accused of fly tipping. I was tempted to open the bag and empty it at the street cleaner's feet but threw it in the next bin I passed instead. Haven't bothered to help out in that way again since.

Bigcheeserolling · 30/12/2024 14:38

Dog shit bins are clearly marked as dog shit bins. They usually have a small opening at the top so you’d have struggled to get the waste you’re
describing into one.

WalnutWendy · 30/12/2024 14:40

It’s a regular street bin like this one

Technically I don't think you're supposed to, but I mean, you'd have to be incredibly petty to complain about it, lol.

Bigcheeserolling · 30/12/2024 14:44

That is absolutely not a “dog shit only” bin. How weird.

doodleschnoodle · 30/12/2024 14:44

That's just a normal bin, definitely not for dog poo.

Christ, imagine being upset about someone putting rubbish in a bin that isn't even anything to do with you. What a miserable little existence.

I wouldn’t have minded just putting it in the wheelie bin, but it’s not being collected for over a week, and I’m not sure there’ll be enough room.

I wanted to get the leaves cleared before the weather gets bad again. They often end up blocking the drain too.

You think you’re doing your civic duty and end up being verbally abused!

You're not meant to.

My council has something called 'The wall of shame' and it's CCTV footage of anyone caught fly-tipping.

They quite often put up images of people cramming bag fulls of rubbish into the street bins and will fine them, if people come forward with their details.

It’s crazy, if people are willing to help they should be grateful!

I am a litter womble and councils in the county will accept bags of litter picked if placed in the coloured litter bags and placed by the council bins. If find a large item which is too big/heavy for bag - need to submit a form on the Love Clean Streets app. If leaving litter picked bag(s) elsewhere, need to do a form on above app.

The council here are proposing to remove about a quarter of the bins in the council area. Know which bins are earmarked for removal as there's a list. No idea when they will be removed. Everyone is not happy as it just makes the place scruffy. Us wombles won't womble the areas which had bins removed to prove a point to council.

Some of the bins earmarked for removal are stupid. Next to a rugby club, the other side of a jitty next to the academy, in front of shops etc.

Balancedcitizen101 · 30/12/2024 14:49

I can't picture what sort of bin it is, do you mean like a standard upwards rectangle/square one? Presumably not a big plastic dumpster one? In terms of this anyway, I know it's too late now but leaves are natural and not really 'litter' like the mars bar wrappers you see. Leaves should be composted at home or put in a green bin. In future I would not bother getting the leaves, or would just move them to the nearest green corner of the street/big verge in a pile out of everyone's way. If you want to help then pick the man made litter and or grit up and bin it at home or I suppose in this Council bin.

But they're not grateful because leaves have to go in green bins here that you have to pay extra for on top of your council tax.

Street bins are for pedestrians to put their personal rubbish (not leaves etc) into.

Dog shit bins are for dog shit.

If people are stupid enough not to spend a few seconds removing their address from their courier delivered boxes etc. I either hand post it myself with "I have returned back to you as you can't be bothered to remove your address from me" written on it or send a photo on Love Clean Streets app with address shown.

It very much is classed as fly-tipping if you're using a public bin for its wrongful purpose.

The purpose of a public bin is for pedestrians to deposit their personal rubbish.

And street leaves are not personal or rubbish.

Bigcheeserolling · 30/12/2024 14:53

My council have massively reduced the number of gardeners. Some of the local park rewilding is great, I can see it’s far more positive for the local environment. Curbs full of soil and weeds choking drains and creating trip hazards, I can see no positive.

Putting excess rubbish into street bins is a grey area. Some councils call it fly tipping and some don't.

Where I live, there is a tip a mile away and saw someone stop off at a bus stop, putting a bag of household rubbish by the bin, 200m from the tip entrance.

That is fucking lazy. Wish I had a dash cam.

WalnutWendy · 30/12/2024 14:54

They (and I, as a council tax payer) will be grateful they’re not having to pay Dyno Rod a bank holiday call out fee because a bunch of leaves have blocked up a drain.

I think you misunderstood?

The CCTV images of their faces are shown on the council website and other social media platforms.

The idea is so that they can get community members riled up enough to report these people's names to the council.

Much like when he government wanted everyone to tell them if their neighbours broke Covid rules!

Then email your council, check they agree and if they do, ignore any passers-by?

The overgrown grass hides nasties. I pulled over to let an ambulance through and smacked the side of my tyre against a hidden broken kerbstone. If I could see it, I would have pulled in after that. Resulted in a flat tyre.
