I cannot believe that this lad is going to spend a year in prison- yes, I know that’s the law there, he should have known better etc, etc
I hope that the girl’s mother is ashamed of her actions.
I don’t want to think what the impact will be on Marcus 😥

Their country their rules

The criminalisation of consensual sexual relations is inconsistent with UN human rights standards, as are judicial punishments which amount to torture, cruel, degrading and inhuman treatment. Some Emirates apply death by stoning or flogging.

Their country and rules can go to hell and so can anyone defending it.

I’m sure someone will resurrect a 2 year dormant profile before long to tell us why he deserves everything he gets because he’s a rapist and sex offender

Yeah, it is odd how that keeps happening.

I’m asking for examples of anyone being stoned to death in the Emirates. The link above is 24 years old, and says the person was sentenced (and it’s from a fairly obscure website). If the sentence was carried out and not commuted I would assume there would be coverage elsewhere of this. I’m well acquainted with the legal system and the conditions of the jails in the UAE - but I also think it’s important to be factually accurate.

The age of sexual consent in Austria, Bulgaria, Estonia and Hungary is 14 years old.

So on your logic would you say it is OK for a 45 year old Hungarian man to come to the UK and have consensual sex with a 14 year old UK girl?

So you are either accepting of illegal underage sex of minors in the UK provided it's legal in the perpetrators home country or the "fuck off to their country their rules" only applies where "their rules are different to our rules " because you know everyone around the world should follow UK rules...

So you are OK with say a 45 year old Hungarian man coming to the UK and having consensual sex with a 15 year old UK girl despite it being illegal n the UK simply because it's legal in Hungary.

I wouldn't be ok with that, but if it was a 16 year old Hungarian boy and a 15 year old Hungarian girl in a consensual relationship then I would have less of a problem.
The rigid thinking on this thread is astonishing.

PinkTonic · 02/01/2025 15:44

I also wonder about the mentality that keeps citing the small gap between the girl’s age at the time, and the legal age of consent there: there has to be a cut-off point, or it’s pointless to make laws. Especially in the aftermath of “Me too” where justice is now being sought against 1970’s and 80’s pop stars whose conquests were similarly “nearly legal”

I think the mentality is that she’d been of consenting age for all but two years in her country of residence and only became under age for the duration of her holiday. They were both definitely stupid to behave like that in such a country, but for me the consequences for him are disproportionate. Calling him a rapist as some on here are is factually inaccurate and disgusting.

There’s a massive difference between two similarly aged teenagers stupidly having consensual sex and famous men exploiting underage teenage girls. Surely you can see that?

Actually, I agree with you if the famous men were much older - but some of those “famous men” were at the time similarly aged to the “underage teenage girls”, so it’s those cases I was referring to in the “whose conquests were similarly “nearly legal” comment…

I was responding to the tone of moral hyperbole mainly, but my understanding from listening to Radha Stirling was that the young girl would also have risked criminal proceedings had she been in the country when the complaint was filed.

Indeed. Which is why her mother waited until they were safely back in the UK before acting.

Agree. The age consent is to protect kids from being groomed and abused by adult predators not to punish horny teenagers.

The endless ‘so you’d be happy with a 90 year old from Ecuador having sex with a 12 year old’ are just beyond ridiculous and not the gotcha they seem to think

I don't disagree with you. For what it's worth I think what happened in this case was that there was a false accusation of rape that the authorities in Dubai rightly investigated. When it was shown that the accusation was false and the sex was consensual then the Dubai authorities were duty bound to press charges as a crime had been committed under their laws.

Had there not been a false accusation of rape then it would never have come to light and I don't think the Dubai authorities would have been bothered plus both consenting parties could have denied it anyway.

Walkden · 03/01/2025 12:06

"Such a straw man. Why would you do this?"

The poster has previously said laws against consensual sex went against UN human rights, with no mention of age gaps, so this is not really a straw man

Most counties put ages limits on sexual consent and limits on ages differences/ "power" imbalance.

Seems a bit ridiculous then to tell people to go to hell because a different country has made different judgements on what a reasonable age and age gap should be...

To make it equal it would be a 14 year old Hungarian boy having sex with a 13 year old girl who is younger by just a few weeks whilst illegal I don't think the police would be looking to prosecute either of them
Vastly different ro a 45 year old man having sex with 14 year old girl
Even if she was 16 and legal it would still be very predatory behaviour on his part

This isnt about a 45yo man having sec with a 14yo - nice what aboutery though Wink

And fwiw as you very well know he's be convicted in this country.

A 15yo having sex with a 14yo - unlikely if straightforward consensual sex.

1dayatatime · 03/01/2025 14:03

So the accusation of rape was quickly dismissed by the Dubai investigative authorities with video evidence of the girl going to the boy's room on multiple occasions and video evidence of them having sex in a car in the hotel car park.

So the question is did the girl make up the false claim to her mother to avoid her anger at confessing to consensual sex or did the mother make up the false claim of rape out of anger / spite / racism/ classism or whatever.

Personally I would go with the former but we will never know. Still the boy knowingly or unknowingly broke the laws of Dubai.

1dayatatime · 03/01/2025 14:07

@itsgettingweird

"This isnt about a 45yo man having sec with a 14yo - nice what aboutery though "

OK then are you ok with Brits breaking the laws of other countries because the same act is not illegal in the UK or that you personally disagree with those laws in other countries?

The fact is he broke the laws of Dubai (a sovereign state) just as you or I would be breaking the laws of Saudi if we decided to sit outside drinking wine or beer.

I’d genuinely like to know what @Sunworshiper thinks about the girl if he’s scum. In their home country they’re peers, both approaching adulthood in a liberal democracy, so what expectations should we have of her behaviour? We can agree she has agency right? That she didn’t actually transform into a child when she got off the plane?
