I cannot believe that this lad is going to spend a year in prison- yes, I know that’s the law there, he should have known better etc, etc
I hope that the girl’s mother is ashamed of her actions.
I don’t want to think what the impact will be on Marcus 😥

whats driving me crazy is all the loons coming along going on about raping minors and suchlike when there was no age disparity. I’d be extremely concerned about a 17 year old daughter having sex within days of meeting a boy as it happens, but that would be a conversation for us to have. There’s no justification for destroying his life when she was an equal participant.

I didn't say otherwise. But I am of the opinion that when in a different country you follow their laws etc.

There is never justification for a convicted sex offender. The only loons are the ones who defend these disgusting men.

Would you feel the same if the woman was 18 and the boy 17? Same school year, I know a few people in this kind of relationship.

The problem with people like you is, you keep eroding the lines the law to suit your sorry cause. So where is your line 17 and 1day olds are fine but 16 11 months and 30 days old is not?
People who blow 30 micrograms per 100 millilitres of alcohol driving are fine next also, how about 25 not far off. Let’s face it if they have not effected any one when stopped their fine.

You and your ilk on this thread are either experiencing extreme black and white thinking for some reason or have a very sinister agenda.

Personally I can’t take your posts seriously now you’ve demonstrated that you are barely literate, so it’s irrelevant which is the case.

TwistedWonder · 02/01/2025 12:19

Hmm there’s a bit of a theme on this thread of posters dormant since 2022 reappearing to keep repeating ‘rapist and convicted sex offender’ at the moment 🤔

Do you think that a 17 year old is too young to consent to sex?

They do in California, which isn't a Gulf state.

They didn't fall in love. If they met in Dubai they could only have known one another a few days. It's all of the nonsense about this that drives me crazy.

It's all the racists that are driving me crazy.

Yes, please report them. I reported several racist posts last night.

I don't have any sympathy for a man who rapes a child. A year isn't much of a sentence anyway.

Sure, in the UK it wouldn't have been a crime. But it wasn't in the UK. If a Nigerian man came to the UK and had sex with a 13 year old girl, people would rightly call it rape and child abuse. Even if she was willing, she is deemed too young to consent. The man can't use the fact that the age of consent is lower in his home country and therefore the UK authorities should allow him to have sex with a 13 year old here.

In the UK, the UK laws apply. In other countries, different laws apply. It's arrogant and racist to assume that the UK gets every law right every time and that if laws are different in other countries they must be wrong.

Why did you decide the nationality of the theoretical man in this theoretical case is Nigerian?

Its also a bit odd that in this imaginery scenario the man thinks 18 is a smaller number than 16.

Calliecarpa · 02/01/2025 13:30

A quick Google search tells me that the age of consent in Nigeria is 18, the same as in Dubai. So I have no idea why our theoretical Nigerian man would think it might be legal to have sex with a 13-year-old. Wonder why Nigeria, of all countries, was chosen as an example. Hmmmmmm, now there's a head-scratcher.

Given there were a few Weeks in age between these two
In your imagined scenario it should be a 13 year old Nigerian boy not man who had sex with a slightly younger by weeks girl ,as they would both be underage they would both be committing a crime.

It’s not about what we think

It’s about the law where they were,
where they actually frown on sex outside marriage

and 18 is also the age of consent in some US states and possibly elsewhere too. Better to err on the upper age than have 13 IMO .

The law tends to be a blunt instrument, unfortunately

Anyotherdude · 02/01/2025 15:12

I have conflicting thoughts on this one…

Yes, the mother was vindictive and probably racist and I hope Karma gets her, but…

The parents of Marcus - why would anyone view Dubai as such a “normal” place to travel for a holiday, that they don’t check the FCDO’s website and make sure that anything like the statement about sexual relations is made crystal clear to everyone partaking on the holiday - especially since they seemed to know the romance was happening…

For the record, this is what it says on the FCDO website:
"Consensual sexual relationships between a male and female outside marriage are generally legal as long as both are over the age of 18 years.
"This includes extra-marital sexual relationships.
"If a person aged 18 or over has a sexual relationship with a person under 18 years old, they will be prosecuted for having a sexual relationship with a minor."

I also wonder about the mentality that keeps citing the small gap between the girl’s age at the time, and the legal age of consent there: there has to be a cut-off point, or it’s pointless to make laws. Especially in the aftermath of “Me too” where justice is now being sought against 1970’s and 80’s pop stars whose conquests were similarly “nearly legal”

In this case, the obvious fly in the ointment was the Mother of the girl - but had I been the parent of the boy, I would have curtailed the holiday early once I realised he’d been indulging in illegal sexual activities (that’s assuming he knew the age of the girl) and got out of Dodge fast, before the midden hit the windmill…

itsgettingweird · 02/01/2025 15:35

All those calling rape (which wasn't what he was convicted for anyway) - if the same boy and girl had sex in the UK in the same circumstances would you also call it rape?

Yes - there's the argument about laws of the country you're in Etc. No one's disputing that.

But we have the nuanced approach to bringing charges and Romeo and Juliet approach.

There's one argument that he broke the law of the country. Fair enough opinions on the uk not brining charges for 15/16yo will differ.

But I also think accusing him of rape when he's not been convicted of that is horrendous. The same as if someone's convicted of manslaughter we don't accuse them of murder. Doesn't mean we think they are innocent because it wasn't murder - it's just the truth of what they were convicted for.

But then I've also seen people think 15yo boys who have sex with 15yo girls should be hung drawn and quartered "because they are men" so I'm not sure a balanced view from each side will be reached 🤷‍♀️

I think the mentality is that she’d been of consenting age for all but two years in her country of residence and only became under age for the duration of her holiday. They were both definitely stupid to behave like that in such a country, but for me the consequences for him are disproportionate. Calling him a rapist as some on here are is factually inaccurate and disgusting.

There’s a massive difference between two similarly aged teenagers stupidly having consensual sex and famous men exploiting underage teenage girls. Surely you can see that?

It looks as though the age of consent is 18 only in southern Nigerian states, whereas its varies (but is generally much lower) accross the northern states. That said, as best my 2 minute google tells me, 14 is the lowest.
