I cannot believe that this lad is going to spend a year in prison- yes, I know that’s the law there, he should have known better etc, etc
I hope that the girl’s mother is ashamed of her actions.
I don’t want to think what the impact will be on Marcus 😥

@icelolly12 that's a bizarre and unhelpful comparison. Drug smuggling is illegal everywhere and does vast harm. Consensual sex between young adults 10 weeks apart in age is legal in the UK and does no one any harm. What is your point here?

He wasn't in the UK though was he 🙄

Plastictrees · 30/12/2024 20:12

ChristmasCardi · 30/12/2024 20:09

I’m not pretending anything. I care about this because that could easily be one of my boys. It’s horrendous he has to suffer God knows what FOR A YEAR for no bloody reason at all. It’s called empathy, I know you seem to struggle with the concept.

As an aside I doubt very much you worry about any severe miscarriages of justice or indeed anyone or anything.

I completely agree. Which is why she cannot give an example of any cases which supposedly ‘worry’ her more than this one. She is probably off to google now though 😂

Thankfully the majority of posters have not had an empathy bypass.

Reetpetitenot · 30/12/2024 20:12

icelolly12 · 30/12/2024 18:37

I know it isn't. My point is that he has broken the law in an Islamic country known for its strict laws. In 2020 sex before marriage in the UAE was illegal full stop. He's serving one year in jail for breaking a law, and although I have some empathy I can't bring myself to get worked up over it as if it is some huge miscarriage of justice. The laws there are black and white.

And the Islamic country in question wouldn't have had a clue about his 'crime' if the girl's mother hadn't reported it from the safety of the UK, and wildly exaggerating what had happened (accusing Marcus of raping her daughter when he had done no such thing).

As detailed upthread, the prison he will serve his sentence in is renowned for I'll treatment of inmates. This isn't some soft Cat D UK open prison. It truly is a miscarriage of justice, caused by one woman's utter spite and vindictiveness.

icelolly12 · 30/12/2024 20:14

Plastictrees · 30/12/2024 20:05

@icelolly12 …another obtuse statement. You’ve said you care about greater miscarriages of justice than this one. So - which one(s)?

Many all around the world. Women not getting access to education, animals being mistreated, wars that are pointless... the list goes on.

Iranian women could face death penalty for defying new morality laws

Execution, long jail terms and big fines for ‘promoting’ nudity, unveiling or improper dressing come into force

Just wanted to add my voice to those who're saying this is an awful story and the lad didn't deserve this at all. I just hope word gets out and people avoid Dubai.

You're the one constantly asking questions.

I think I'll leave it there, I've said my piece.

£20 says you won’t leave it there!

Nope… like you say though, it ensures the thread continues to be popular and looked at so it’s a win for those of us who actually care about this case!

They're widely reported as having been in the same school year. For example, in the Standard:

https://www.standard.co.uk/news/world/marcus-fakana-dubai-jail-david-lammy-b1199259.html

I don't see how they can be in the same school year if the girl's 18th birthday was some weeks after the school term had started in September.

Some of you seem to have forgotten all about 'poor Marcus'. Anyway I am actually done, as if someone has a different opinion it is lets pile on that poster rather than debate the issue at hand.

As expected, these are not examples of specific cases. You failed there I’m afraid!!

Copied from another thread but let’s see that wonderful Dubai always equally applied justice in action eh

Written by the CEO of detained in Dubai, Radha Stirling and is 100% correct.

Tori Towey broke the law when she tried to take her own life to escape domestic abuse.
Ellie Holman “broke the law” when she consumed a glass of wine provided onboard an Emirates Airlines flight. She was charged with possession of alcohol in her blood and nothing else.
Craig Ballentine allegedly “broke the law” when he left a negative online review on a company’s page.
Stuart Quiney allegedly “broke the law” when he sent allegedly threatening emojis from Ireland to a Belgian man in Dubai
Scott Richards broke the law when he shared a children’s charity on Facebook.
Peter Clark broke the law when his blood contained residual hashish from cannabis smoked legally in Las Vegas, weeks before travel.
Laleh Shahravesh broke the law when she made a private Facebook post branding her ex husband’s new girlfriend “horse face” FROM the UK, five years before travel.
The late David Oliver broke the law when he fell into debt after being made redundant.
Jamie Harron allegedly broke the law after touching a man’s hip as he brushed past in a busy bar.
Billy Barclay allegedly broke the law after using a Scottish bank note deemed counterfeit.
Perry Coppins broke the law when his ship docked in Abu Dhabi along with his prescription medicine that he needed for his maritime security job.
Marcus Fakana allegedly broke the law for having relations with a fellow tourist one month too early.
THE LIST GOES ON!
No, we don’t abandon citizens who are facing injustice, unfair and lengthy prison sentences in an allied country who spends a fortune marketing itself as a modern, tolerant and liberal society, directly targeting Western tourists who would otherwise go to European holiday destinations.”

Ok, I’ll donate the £20 in your name to Marcus’ fundraiser (link on Radha Stirling’s twitter acct - easier to find via google as she’s a prolific poster!)

PandoraSox · 30/12/2024 19:26

The genealogy websites get the info from the registry, don't they?

Why did you decide to look him up?

Yes - probably.
I looked him up because there are lots of posts on this thread speculating about the age gap and my dh subscribes to the website.

TwistedWonder · 30/12/2024 20:22

icelolly12 · 30/12/2024 20:12

He wasn't in the UK though was he 🙄

And nor were the drug smugglers and murderers in your link but apparently we’re supposed to save a few tears for them

Or is it only young black men you can’t find any empathy for?

Calliecarpa · 30/12/2024 20:23

We're not supposed to care about a young British man incarcerated in a horrendous jail because 'pointless wars' happen.

Ohhhhhhkaaaaay.

Eggseggslegs · 30/12/2024 20:23

nogginatemycat · 30/12/2024 13:26

Zero fucks given.

You seem nice

And there’s threads discussing that very valid misogyny- but it’s got sweet FA to do with this thread.

its perfectly possible to have concerns about more than one thing you know

Hmm accusing me of being racist?

My point is anyone who breaks the law has to realise they might be punished. Even when it's not the same law we have. Strange how so many posters can't understand this simple fact.

Bloom15 · 30/12/2024 20:26

MjMadness · 30/12/2024 18:28

I feel sorry for Marcus, but British tourists need to wise up to the laws of other countries.

You may think what's happened to Marcus is bad, but spare a thought for poor Otto Warmbier and his family. Otto took a propogander leaflet from a hotel in N Korea and is now dead after suffering torture ...

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Otto_Warmbier#:~:text=Warmbier%20never%20regained%20consciousness%20and,of%20oxygen%20to%20the%20brain.

Well some PPs on here would say he got what he deserved as he broke the law in a country. They are sociopathic dickheads though...

Beekeepingmum · 30/12/2024 20:27

I feel for the boy and his family. Ultimately it seems that the best that come from this is a reminder that we can't travel to other countries and expect it to be the same as at home. Dubai doesn't have a Western culture.

Plastictrees · 30/12/2024 20:27

And still you keep posting @icelolly12 despite saying multiple times you are leaving! You just care TOO much about this don’t you, you can’t keep away 😁
