Hear me out.

She’s rich, beautiful, and meets a man (as handsome as she is beautiful, and not in need of her wealth so she should be able to take him at face value) who makes it clear that caring for his children isn’t a top priority for him.

He proposes and then suddenly, thanks to the appearance of a singing and painfully chirpy nun, he’s in the running for Dad of the Year 1938 and poor Elsa is painted as the villain.

In fairness to her, she bows out with dignity. A lesser woman would have keyed his car. Or shopped him into Hitler.

I’ve always rather admired her. She and the Captain were all wrong for one another but she leaves with grace and dignity once it’s clear where his heart really lies.

Damn. Edit as won't let me post nice pic of Captain vT as a young man.

From what I gather, the real Captain was an amiable chap (although a formidable submarine commander) and not the martinet the film makes him out to be, at all. His eldest son resigned as a doctor after his hospital sacked all the Jewish ones so a moral compass there.

Anyway, some sympathy with the Baroness TBH but I don't think she was entirely cut out for step motherhood.

Classic man falls for the help/ mother figure. Can't handle a real women his own age.

And what's wrong with boarding school for the children anyway? Their education seemed very lacking as did their socialisation. If Lisel had had a properly rounded education would she have been trying to get off with the Nazi mailman?

Liesl does go to school. At one point she tells Maria she can’t wait to return to school, and Maria says something like ‘you can’t use school to escape your problems, you have to face them’.

His suits don't have pockets. If you watch closely you'll see he doesn't know where to put his hands 😁

I’d show him where to put his hands. 😈

This parody letter from the Baroness to everyone explaining why they have called their wedding off makes me laugh every time I read it...

That’s hilarious. Would have been a much better ending to the movie than the talent show/flee from Nazis.

It's quite sobering to think that The Sound of Music came out just 20 years after the war had ended. That makes the events more recent than most of that Robbie Williams biopic are to us.

9/11 is farther back from today than WWII was from the time I was born.

ABBA winning the Eurovision is as far back as WWI was when I was born.

Kurt Cobain is dead 30 years. 30 years before that, The Sound of Music was released.

StartupRepair · 29/12/2024 20:24

Completely agree that the Baroness is very cool. And very gracious although not stepmother material. Hope she was ok during the war.
