He proposes and then suddenly, thanks to the appearance of a singing and painfully chirpy nun, he’s in the running for Dad of the Year 1938 and poor Elsa is painted as the villain.

In fairness to her, she bows out with dignity. A lesser woman would have keyed his car. Or shopped him into Hitler.

She’s very gracious and let’s be honest, once introduced to the 7 children, realised that it is in fact she who is the catch, not the Captain, and quite rightly runs for the hills.

It's quite sobering to think that The Sound of Music came out just 20 years after the war had ended. That makes the events more recent than most of that Robbie Williams biopic are to us.

@WTFWilma It goes some way to explaining why the film is not particularly popular in Austria. Imagine having Nazi insignia etc thrown up for the film set on location such a short time after the real events!

In the stage musical she's just Frau Schrader but presumably they upgraded her to baroness because Eleanor Parker was a fairly big star.
