Hear me out.

She’s rich, beautiful, and meets a man (as handsome as she is beautiful, and not in need of her wealth so she should be able to take him at face value) who makes it clear that caring for his children isn’t a top priority for him.

He proposes and then suddenly, thanks to the appearance of a singing and painfully chirpy nun, he’s in the running for Dad of the Year 1938 and poor Elsa is painted as the villain.

In fairness to her, she bows out with dignity. A lesser woman would have keyed his car. Or shopped him into Hitler.

Her outfits are gorgeous and she's beautiful. She's quite gracious in defeat.

FuzzyPuffling · 29/12/2024 18:07

And Liesl is such a weedy wet..." I'll run to him....."etc

SemperIdem · 29/12/2024 18:08

She’s very gracious and let’s be honest, once introduced to the 7 children, realised that it is in fact she who is the catch, not the Captain, and quite rightly runs for the hills.

murasaki · 29/12/2024 18:09

Yes, she can do better.

And she has the BEST clothes ever! That gold dress! The chic little suits!

Oh that dress is beautiful!!

There is a very uncomfortable power dynamic in the Captain/Maria relationship. How convenient that having been ditched by his equal there is an adoring naive ex nun on hand to parent his children and look out for him.

Yes this rings all sorts of safeguarding alarm bells!

FuzzyPuffling · 29/12/2024 18:10

What did wife no 1 die of? Has anyone dredged the lake?

It's interesting OP, I watched SOM again recently, and felt a bit sorry for her.

When I was younger I saw her differently - she was sort of painted as the bad guy a little bit as she's competition for Maria - more glamorous and worldly. But to be fair to her she steps away gracefully and keeps her composure when she realises that he loves Maria not her.

Also, Christopher Plummer, what a dish!

Edited

I agree that different life stages make you view the characters differently (let's be honest - we've all watched it millions of times!)

I once thought she was the bad one getting in the way of true love.

Then I grew up and realised she didn't know about Maria - when Maria came along he fell for her and she did the right thing by walking away with her head held high and refused to be used.

Who knew the SOM - the easy watch annual Christmas movie could be so profound and deep 😂

FuzzyPuffling · 29/12/2024 18:21

Hurrah, Fraulein Schweiser. Keep bowing, lovely.

Well, her running for the hills is quite the plot twist! Not sure she has the practical outfits.

evilharpy · 29/12/2024 18:26

Baroness Schraeder is goals. The wardrobe, the independent wealth, the attitude. I want to be her. I bet she goes to some amazing parties and owns several tiaras.

SpicyMarge · 29/12/2024 18:30

My husband would like to point out that the mountain they escape over at the end actually brings them right to the Nazis.

Elsa would have known that but noooo, Christopher had to take off with stoopid Maria.

OP posts:
GellerYeller · 29/12/2024 18:31

And she’s pals with Uncle Max who appears to be some sort of 1930s Simon Cowell Svengali type running talent contests. They must have the most glamorous parties in Vienna!

Memyselfmilly · 29/12/2024 18:32

FuzzyPuffling · 29/12/2024 17:58

And the goaty puppet show would be much better at "Austria's Got Talent" than a washy rendition of "Edelweiss".

I’m always amazed how they just pulled the goaty puppet show together…. Sure.

XWKD · 29/12/2024 18:35

I think Reverend Mother is team Baroness as well.

What is it you cunt face?

Do you hear the nun swear?

I've watched this over the Xmas period as well, pure class!

FuzzyPuffling · 29/12/2024 18:10

What did wife no 1 die of? Has anyone dredged the lake?

I always assumed it was childbirth related, but google tells me that she actually died of scarlet fever.

Piggywaspushed · 29/12/2024 18:47

Edelweiss was the last lyrics Hammerstein ever wrote. I won't have a word said against it!

WTFWilma · 29/12/2024 18:53

It's quite sobering to think that The Sound of Music came out just 20 years after the war had ended. That makes the events more recent than most of that Robbie Williams biopic are to us.

SemperIdem · 29/12/2024 18:56

@WTFWilma It goes some way to explaining why the film is not particularly popular in Austria. Imagine having Nazi insignia etc thrown up for the film set on location such a short time after the real events!

KiIIingMeDeftly · 29/12/2024 18:57

In the stage musical she's just Frau Schrader but presumably they upgraded her to baroness because Eleanor Parker was a fairly big star. I liked how she knew when to bow out with dignity but I wonder how far her relationship with the Captain had gone? Just a bit of heavy flirting? Or was it FWB whenever he was in Vienna?

Whatever you do, don't google for photos of the real captain and Maria. Plummer and Andrews they were not!

JacJac77 · 29/12/2024 19:01

But she did get into Maria's head and got rid of the competition when she saw them dancing at the party. I am def #TeamMaria.

Sandsnake · 29/12/2024 19:10

I reckon marriage to the Cap probably came with a bunch of issues for Maria but I will never be able to see him tear up that Nazi flag without getting the raging horn.

VictorianScreenTime · 29/12/2024 19:11

Agree OP. Captain Von T really drops her in the shit with the “this is your new mother” announcement just after Maria has left and the kids are all devastated.

Way to cast her as the wicked stepmother Georg.

Definitely LTB Elsa.

HornyHornersPinkyWinky · 29/12/2024 18:02

Yeah, but he looks great in a suit :-)

His suits don't have pockets. If you watch closely you'll see he doesn't know where to put his hands 😁
