Crashed into neighbour's car

jiporin · 29/12/2024 11:26

I'm so pissed off!!

I have knocked on and ask my neighbours not to park one of their cars on the road, directly opposite my driveway as it means I cannot reverse off.

They stopped doing it, but today they parked the car there and I've reversed into it!!

For fuck sake! I know I am BU but I begrudge having to pay for the damage.

Oh dear. YABVU as you well know 😂

Reverse on/drive off in future.

Trumptonagain · 29/12/2024 11:55

Yes, as you say its your fault but I really do understand where you're coming from.

The neighbour that lives opposite my DC does exactly the same.
DC always reverses into their drive and as its a cul de sac it isn’t the widest of roads anyway.

Liesmorelies · 29/12/2024 12:05

I sympathise even though it's your fault really. Parking opposite someone's drive absolutely can be seen as Parking like a dick. My road is quite narrow and I've lived here for 10 years and despite there being no official restrictions traditionally only one side of the road is used for parking, which has been fine as most houses have drives. More recently people from nearby roads have been parking on the other side and it's a nightmare. There's no room to manoeuvre, and that would include reversing on. People should consider where they park, especially if they've been told it's causing issues.

KhakiOrca · 29/12/2024 12:07

Can we have a diagram please?

TheHouseElf · 29/12/2024 12:08

On the plus side, doubt that they'll ever park there again now. Silver linings😂

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 29/12/2024 12:28

My NDN always park facing their house as they have a load of things in the boot to remove ( and replace the next day) and cannot open the boots if they're up against the house .

One of my neighbours parks their behemoth van opposite me and it's a 'mare sometimes but I 99.9% reverse in.
When it;s icy on the road my car eases off the drive like a mighty alligator entering the water and I have to steer like a pro not to clip the Van

Agree

If people park opposite my drive it makes it really difficult to reverse on or off...it is dick parking!

How annoying OP, hopefully it won't cost too much to sort!

Rewis · 29/12/2024 12:33

I feel you. The opposite neighbour at my bfs has decided to start parking on the road instead of their driveway. And the car is always directly positioned in a way that when you reverse out you need to maneuver weirdly. If they'd move it one meter to either direction it wouldn't really bother anyone. And there are no streetlights so it's a pain in the ass after dark. So yeah, your fault and it fucking sucks at the same time.

78rt · 29/12/2024 12:38

I do know what you mean. If they parked there after you were already on your drive (forwards) and reduced the space you had to reverse into, it makes it very tricky.

It's the same in car parks when something opposite sticks out too far from its space and you haven't got the room to pull out in one go in the direction you want to turn. You've got to be careful, but they also shouldn't be awkwardly obstructing everyone.

Iknitjumpers · 29/12/2024 12:41

The parking sensors would have been screaming though. Hopefully any damage was minimal, reversing is usually done at very low speed.

I hit a car while revercing over the summer (the car next to me. It was a very odd and unlucky how everything happend
Obviously my fault. And no parking cenceors in any of the cars Ive driven 😅) minimal speed. I mean as slowly as it is humanly possible to drive. Still apparently the damage to the other car was worth £3000.

whiteswan87 · 29/12/2024 12:49

Unfortunately I have the same issue with people parking directly opposite my drive so I feel your pain! Also it's sometimes tricky to reverse on to the drive when inconsiderate cars are already parked opposite so to all those saying you shouldn't be reversing off when you leave, it's not always that simple.

AndrewPreview · 29/12/2024 12:51

Not everyone has parking sensors ;)

I've done it OP (no I don't have parking sensors) it's insanely annoying because you know it's your fault and you just have to deal with it. The plus side is, you'll not do it again ;)
I hope you have a decent relationship with your neighbours and it's all sorted out without too much drama.

Confused19831983 · 29/12/2024 12:54

Why is everyone on Mumsnet so bloody self righteous?! It makes me want to delete the app.
I understand your frustration, OP.

You know not all cars have parking sensors, right?

Same here, no car I’ve ever owned has parking sensors. My current car is nearly 16 years old. My husband’s car has them and he’s got so used to them, he couldn’t imagine being without them.

youngoldthing · 29/12/2024 11:35

Ah OP I know what you mean.

you'll get a hard time on here and I know you’re annoyed at yourself but other people do park like dicks even when they’ve been asked not to.

hopefully not an expensive repair and on the upside they might consider not parking there in future.

People Park like dicks.
Other people drive like dicks.
It tends to be very expensive when those 2 things meet each other. Just apologise and pay.

NotSayingImBatman · 29/12/2024 13:14

If it makes you feel any better, I did exactly the same thing, having had exactly the same conversation with my neighbours. To make matters worse, it was the morning of DS2’s christening and I was already stressed to fuck, so it was the icing on the (christening) cake, quite frankly.

They stopped parking there and started using their bastarding drive after that.

Wendolino · 29/12/2024 13:35

jiporin · 29/12/2024 11:32

Did you all miss the part where I said I know am BU?

Of course they didn't miss it but it makes some people's day to be able to make someone else feel stupid.

Ablondiebutagoody · 29/12/2024 13:44

It's not the neighbours fault that you don't look where you are going

ChristmasGrinch24 · 29/12/2024 13:52

I feel your pain. My neighbour oppsite parks directly in front of my driveway on the road despite building their own driveway this summer! And then my next door neighbour parks right outside my house next to my driveway and it's a nightmare having to do a 6 point turn just to get off!

Eyresandgraces · 29/12/2024 13:52

@jiporin I truly sympathise.
I reversed into a speedboat once, I mean it was on a trailer opposite our driveway.
Years ago before sensors were a thing.
Of course I've never been allowed to forget the incident.

Flossflower · 29/12/2024 14:24

Let the neighbour claim from you insurance. It will give them a lot of hassle and hopefully they won’t park there again. Everyone is right though about not reversing out of your driveway.

Schoolchoicesucks · 29/12/2024 14:29

I reversed into a neighbours car once too, OP. They were very nice about it. Invited me to their Christmas drinks later that month (never had before).

It happens. I hope the damage isn't too bad. Also hope they will stop parking there in future.

Anothercoffeeafter3 · 29/12/2024 14:39

Even worse when they are the only person who didn't park on the curb so you had to do full lock and a 3 point turn to get off....also meant it was impossible for even an advance driver to reverse on! We had firemen and police in the street who all couldn't get on if someone parked fully on the road opposite their drives. The kids played in the road and moved for cars coming so it was perfectly safe to walk down plus as a dead end it was only us using it. Luckily I only hit our own bin store. Would never buy a new build again!

I would let the insurance fight it out if the car is causing an obstruction it could go 50:50 or even the threat of you blaming them through insurance might stop it or encourage them to mount the curb.
