I have 2 young children in school.

I am becoming more and more anxious about what sort of jobs / careers they will have open to them.

I work for very large company with 10,000s of employees.

20 years ago whe I started work here there would be 100s of entry level jobs at any given time. These are jobs that don't require experience or a degree, ideal for a school leaver, and I know dozens of people who started their career this way.

Now there are maybe 10 jobs that would fit the same criteria.so. All the jobs have been offshored.
Now are the vacancies are for very specific technical skill set or experience.

This doesn't bode well for someone who has left school at 18'or even university.

Women are conspicuously lacking as electricians, plumbers, decorators etc. How many women would be happy and feel safer with a female tradesperson doing work I'm the house - at least you know there would not be pee splash in the loo!

The military too, are keen for new personnel - the trades - engineering, communication, technical trades that are transferable upon discharge. Good pension and conditions.

YANBU Governments need to get to grips with this. I’ve seen a solution offered that a tax is levied, equal to average wage, for every job automated or off-shored.

The government would then use this money to ensure everyone has a basic living wage. People would work to have luxuries. Full time work would be 3-4 days a week. We would all have more time to look after kids, elderly relatives, family & friends.

There would be less travel for work, less food waste & we could take the good bits of live 100 years ago and the good bits of life now.

No one would need to get paid Maternity pay, sick pay or unemployment. We would all have a basic living wage. Companies couldn’t exploit people anymore.

Women don't fight in infantry roles anyway. Well, not in the UK or US nor I think most of Europe.

AgentJohnson · 05/01/2025 07:57

The world doesn't look the same as it used to and in a lit of ways that's a good thing. I'd say get positive around your kids, make them part of the solution.

This

Things change, my mum worked three jobs, hand washed our clothes and dishes and it was relentless for her. My life has been very different, I suspect DD’s life will be different too.

Tbf, we're one page away from the thread end anyway. I think the not so fun goose might be surprised to set foot on a construction site in Birmingham. HS2 is about 50% non white workers from my experience as are many of the largs civil builds.

SidhuVicious · 05/01/2025 08:05

The hardest working white guys are usually Polish or Romanian.

I’m reading this in the USA trying to learn more about Great Britain. My opinion (which of course is just an opinion) is that the difference is that many in the USA have far less expectations for the government to “take care of everything” and see it as an individual responsibility to look after oneself compared to GB. That has helped keep the USA growing. Many here feel the recent election results reflects “the people taking their country back” from a smaller more socialist group who wanted government to solve and supply everything from healthcare, to college (waving loans) etc. Again, just an insight - and there are plenty who would not agree.

so is there no Welfare state?

l am 59, more than ever you need to look after your money, walking down the road to work carrying a £4 coffee and nipping out to buy a £5 sandwich are an example of peoples choices of how and where to spend. Uni debt + degree must equal a decent paying job or its simply not worth it financially, its just a life experience. So my point is people need to be more financially savvy. I never imagined people would pay someone to clean their oven or wheelie bins the world has changed, but also those business's earn a good salary for people. Trades, if you run your business correctly will earn 50k upwards, more if you employ people. New jobs are coming or will be invented, a friend of mine has just started to become a influencer. So repair it, clean it, delver it, install it, design it plenty of new jobs coming but unlikely to see a 2% mortgage rate again.
