Boiled potatoes have no place on a roast dinner!

My DP was confused as to why I wasn’t cooking some boiled potatoes to go along with the roast potatoes on our Christmas dinner.

Who does this?! He maintains that it is a thing - his DM and DGM did them so he thinks that everyone has both roast potatoes and boiled potatoes on a roast. Google suggests he is wrong.

What do the wise people of MN think?

YABU = yes boiled potatoes and roast potatoes together on a roast dinner are normal.

YANBU = roast potatoes are the king of potatoes on a roast and boring boiled potatoes are taking up space that could be more delicious roasties!

I wouldn't have room for more roast spuds if I ate mash so it's a no from me.
I had a horrific roast potatoe experience though, when my DP cooked a roast dinner for the first time when he moved in.
Not only had he not par boiled and shook the potatoes.... he hadn't even peeled them!
I nearly dumped him on the spot 😄

Boiled potatoes with gravy? Ick.

My MIL does boiled with roast potatoes (of which there are never enough) and I've always thought it odd.

PuppyMonkey · 29/12/2024 08:45

It’s got to be roast and mash in my book, with most people commenting that the mash is bloody gorgeous. Grin

We have two types of potatoes at Christmas - roast and sugared brown potatoes. That's the only combination of potato options I'll accept

On 23rd December I do roast lamb with rhubarb jelly and Carmel potatoes - it’s a heritage thing. But I do roast potatoes then too.

TheaBrandt · 29/12/2024 08:49

When he cooks Christmas dinner he can decide what goes in it. The pathetic ness of a grown adult having a meal cooked for him then whining about the meal like a 5 year old would put me right off him.

Not enough roast potatoes is awful!! I always make way too many as I love them cold and eat them as a snack directly out of the fridge after dinner.

On the Yorkshire pudding thing my Grandfather was from Yorkshire and he was aghast at anything other than Yorkshire pudding as a starter (and only when having roast beef!)

foyc · 29/12/2024 08:51

I've never made boiled potatoes end of, what on earth does a pile of tasteless carb add to a meal? Roast them or mash them with butter and give them some enjoyment factor at least.

WrigglyDonCat · 29/12/2024 08:51

Ditch the roasties and hit up the boiled. Best potato ever. Not sure if that makes you reasonable or unreasonable though. Which is the option for just one sort but make them boiled?

AnnieMay2000 · 29/12/2024 08:51

We always have mash and roasties. The odd time croquettes too. We are Irish 😃

StampOnTheGround · 29/12/2024 08:52

Boiled potatoes are horrible - no place anywhere, especially a roast dinner!

RoseDog · 29/12/2024 08:53

I have boiled potato ptsd, my mum either over cooked them to mush or undercooked them so they were still hard in the middle and you had to finish what's on your plate, since moving out 22 years ago I have never cooked or eaten a plain boiled potato!

I will eat all other types of potato including boiled new potatoes when in season!

My Mum said, as a child, they always had Yorkshires as a starter on Sunday so that they did not need much meat with their Sunday Lunch.

Houseplanter · 29/12/2024 08:56

Maybe a generational thing cos my parents would have had this.

They had boiled with just about everything; a roast potato was a treat on a Sunday.

Also mashed were just mashed up boiled (awful) whereas 'creamed' were with milk and butter.

A jacket potato was extremely rare as having the oven on for that long was wasteful Shock

Ohmych · 29/12/2024 08:59

Dp insists on having boiled potatoes with Christmas dinner. He just has them on his plate no one else is weird enough to join him. He also has fried egg on top of pizza so make of that what you like.

99point6 · 29/12/2024 08:59

I would expect boiled potatoes are a hangover from being a cheap filler in poorer times. Not as pleasant as Yorkshires or dumplings. No need now but traditions can be hard to break.

FranklySonImTheGaffer · 29/12/2024 09:01

Welsh valleys resident here and everyone I know (including restaurants) do boiled and roast potatoes on a roast dinner.
I'm the only one I know that alters that to mash 🤷‍♀️
Just roasties would feel weird to me.

Will say that I will also put a Yorkshire pudding on regardless of what meat we're eating and DH has added sweetcorn to our dinners which I unexpectedly enjoy.

allthemiddlechildrenoftheworld · 29/12/2024 09:05

@BoiledOrRoastPotatoes you are not wrong!! some of the pics I have seen on rate my roast are absolutely ridiculous!! roast potatoes, mashed potatoes baby potatoes all on the one plate, every kind of vegetable you could think of, including cauliflower and cheese sauce!!! and dont forget the yorkshire pudding which apparently has to go on every plate of food, even a plate of mince and tatties!!!! then of course it is drowned in gravy and killed with pepper!!! the plates must actually be platters because i could not get all that food on my plates! who needs to eat that much food anyway? it is just greed!

Yep same here!! 👋

ForTheLoveOfJackDaniels · 29/12/2024 09:09

How very dare you. I prefer boiled to roast, so have both. Nothing wrong with it. I've seen mash and even cauliflower cheese on a roast dinner. What's that all about....

JustAnotherPieceOfCake · 29/12/2024 09:10

Plain, boiled potatoes shouldn't be on ANY dinner

foyc · 29/12/2024 09:15

I prefer boiled to roast

But, but, but, how?! They don't taste of anything?!

StepAwayFromMyCoffee · 29/12/2024 09:18

Yuk, no thanks! Boiled potatoes are gross at the best of times but I definitely wouldn’t want them spoiling a lovely roast dinner 😋

StepAwayFromMyCoffee · 29/12/2024 09:19

Poppins21 · 29/12/2024 08:34

Sweetcorn has no place on a roast dinner plate 😂

I beg your pardon???? Sweetcorn is the king of veggies and should always be on a roast.

Giggorata · 29/12/2024 09:23

I really don't see the point of having any other incarnation of potato than roasties with a roast dinner. What a let down.
