Boiled potatoes have no place on a roast dinner!

My DP was confused as to why I wasn’t cooking some boiled potatoes to go along with the roast potatoes on our Christmas dinner.

Who does this?! He maintains that it is a thing - his DM and DGM did them so he thinks that everyone has both roast potatoes and boiled potatoes on a roast. Google suggests he is wrong.

What do the wise people of MN think?

YABU = yes boiled potatoes and roast potatoes together on a roast dinner are normal.

YANBU = roast potatoes are the king of potatoes on a roast and boring boiled potatoes are taking up space that could be more delicious roasties!

We normally have 2 types of potatoes with a roast- roast potatoes of course and either mash or boiled potatoes or if in season jersey royals boiled. So I am with your husband on this one.

Why have inferior potatoes served with roast potatoes when simply proving more roasties is the obvious solution.

I love all kinds of potatoes but not two types together. Some people put mash on roasts alongside the roast ones. Also weird.

But then I'm a purist and don't think there should be Yorkshire puddings unless it's beef.

Show him the roast menu from any pub near you. I have had mash and roast potatoes at other houses or seen this on MN but personally it’s always just roast potatoes.

I don’t do boiled potatoes with mine but don’t see any issue with it. I have certainly had boiled potato’s on roasts when eating out

I always have mash with mine though.

With you on the yorkshires and beef but always 2 types of potatoes.

Potato overload. Why waste space on multiple formats of the same vegetable? Roast is best.

There is zero point to having boiled potatoes on the table. I would consent to mash so long as it was made with plenty of cheese and cream, but it's not an intrinsic part of a roast dinner.

I will sometimes do mash with a roast but usually just a shed load of roast potatoes - there were 3 of us on Christmas Day & I did enough spuds for at least 6!

I'm not a fan of mashed or boiled, and no point wasting stomach and plate space with anything other than roast potatoes.

But I have Yorkshire puddings, stuffing and cranberry sauce with every roast dinner, it doesn't matter what meat we're having. And i also like sweetcorn with it 😳

I have never understood why people have two types of potato with a meal. We do roast potatoes or mash.

Boiled potatoes are awful. If you have to have a different potato to roast, at least make it mash.

I have had a roast with roasties and boiled potatoes but it was due to space in the oven. There were 20 of us so we had 2 roast potatoes and 2 boiled.

I always assumed that was why mash appears on roast dinners too because in the potato hierarchy, mash are far superior to boiled

They should always be Yorkshires - one of the best bits. And I say that as Lancashire Lass😁

My DM will do mash which I am all in favour of but not boiled. Unless it's buttered and herbed jersey royals but they're not in season and I wouldn't do them with roast.

People like what they like etc but where has sweetcorn on a roast dinner come from? It makes no sense to me, it's just sweetness, doesn't add anything to the balance of flavours or textures. All for corn on a BBQ but not a roast.

Boiled potatoes are great when they're good potatoes with some butter. They don't belong with a roast.

Op why doesn't your dp make the dinner next time?

We have two types of potatoes at Christmas - roast and sugared brown potatoes. That's the only combination of potato options I'll accept

My family like a lot of potatoes. I've never had to do this, but if I ever had to cook for a massive crowd I might boost the potato count by making a few boiled ones in the hob. A roasting dish can only hold so many roasties.

It's like the whole Yorkshire pudding on a roast dinner thing. People have a personal preference. If he wants a boiled potato on his dinner, he can have one.
