To leave a five month old sleeping unsupervised on a bed

The situation: a five month old baby is put down for a nap in the middle of a double bed, in a bedroom, and left unsupervised (door closed), but parents check in every so often (realistically every 3-5 minutes or so). The baby is placed in the middle of the bed. The duvet is folded down, away from the baby, a loose blanket is placed on the baby, from chest down. Two pillows are placed on either side of the baby, at the side edges of bed, in case baby rolls off bed.

YABU - this is fine, I would be happy with this situation

YANBU - this isn’t OK, I wouldn’t do this.

'Huge risk of death' is somewhat of an exaggeration! But I completely agree that it's unsafe on many counts and not something I'd allow.

I think anything posing a real threat of death to my child is 'high risk'. Not one but 3 common causes of child death in one situation!

Is this the story they're telling to try to explain how their baby got the head injury?

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 30/12/2024 22:39

This is how I learnt that my non-rolling baby was now a rolling baby.

Dixiedot90 · 30/12/2024 22:53

Oh my goodness no, definitely not at 5 months

Eek yes I would but without the pillows and blankets! I would've put the pillows on the floor in case they rolled off.

@OldFish good idea, then the baby could roll off just to suffocate face down in a pillow

MrsSkylerWhite · 30/12/2024 22:58

No, you don’t put a small baby on a big bed with pillows.

Why are they not in a cot/travel cot?

and no way are you checking them every 5 mins. (If you are, you know the set up is wrong)

Lighttodark · 30/12/2024 22:59

Absolutely not. Do not ever do this

Nextyearhopes · 30/12/2024 23:09

You ask ANY of our grandparents and you would find that they didn’t resort to any if the pathetic ‘parenting’ practices that silly youngsters use nowadays.

And no OP. This is a stupid idea if you need to ask a stupid question. Put the baby in a sodding cot, like millions have done before.
