Electric scooter kid went flying after hitting my car door

LoveMyPiano · 26/12/2024 18:06

I was just about to get out of my car - door opening onto the pavement - this afternoon, not dark by any stretch of the imagination, although the car door does have a light that stays on even when ignition off.
I had seen a girl (I think I know her, she's 8 or 9) go zooming past "up" the road - wearing black, on her no-doubt Christmas present, large electric scooter.
I pushed the door open, not fully, an was about to get out when I heard a skidding sound and she hit the car door and went flying onto the ground.
When I look afterwards, the tyre marks were about 2/3 of the way across the pavement, closer to my car. Had the door been fully opened, it would have been badly damaged, I think - or she might have been.
She rolled on the ground but didn't hit her head (no helmet) and seemed to want to check her scooter thoroughly herself.

I didn't say sorry - more like "Oh God!" - and checked she was OK, briefly saying that she was very difficult to see, but that's all, even though I think a whole lot more.
This will no doubt come back to me as "she was knocked off her scooter by that woman up the road" etc - but AIBU to think it was her own fault, even allowing for the fact she is a young child?

Oh those scooters are absolute menaces, awful things, so dangerous. Can’t believe someone gave one to a small child 😠

NoOneKnowsWhoYouAre · 27/12/2024 16:04

How annoying. I sympathise, but as an aside; Were you parking on the offside? If so you were breaking the highway code (Rule 239) Don't park facing the traffic. Incidentally recently near me, a driver opened their car into the path of a cyclist and the person fell off the bike, hit their head and died. The person opening the car door got arrested for death by careless driving. Pretty sure that won't stick but goes to show that the onus is on the driver.

Have you looked at your cam yet as that will solve any guilt complexes you might have.

Still haven't found the cable, and the SD card is so small, I need the carrier that I also cannot find! (And the manual.)

On an ELECTRIC scooter that she was zooming about on a few moments before... and that was way too big and unsuitable and fast for her - obviously.
She is very lucky that she wasn't badly hurt - and it was bound to happen sooner or later, actual DRIVING around here is far far FAR worse than my generally careful exit from my car.

And for anyone is repeating that a car door shouldn't be opened across a pavement - what do their passengers do, climb over the centre console, out of the boot?

@LoveMyPiano Info in scatter riding that seems to be comprehensive https://www.micro-scooters.co.uk/posts/electric-scooters-for-adults-and-kids-are-they-legal

I don't think anyone on this thread thinks that e-scooters are legal, especially not ridden by an 8 year old on the path.

The link was to supply OP with accurate information she can quote should the child’s parents have a rant/ threaten her etc etc.

mollyfolk · 27/12/2024 18:26

Like I said, she and her friends have been shockingly rude, but I wouldn't wish her any harm. IF it's her - as there are several who look alike.

There are several girls that look so similar that you can't tell the difference?? What a strange thing to say.

If I saw an accident with a child on my road, I'd make sure they got home safe, never mind if I was involved with the accident. I'd just say she ran into the car door and you just wanted to be sure she got home ok as she has fallen off.

I know agree the scooters are a menace. But she's just a child and your car door hurt her.

SinnerBoy · 27/12/2024 18:32

No, she hurt herself on the car door.

ThisTeaIsBad · 27/12/2024 18:45

Why do people keep saying OP hit the girl? The girl hit the car door, OP didn't hit her. Also why are people talking about her being injured? There has been no mention of any injury.

Honestly, the girl was OK, it's a silly accident in which both played a part but if anything it was more the girl at fault. There's no need for anyone to be reporting anything to anyone.

I don't think the police would be remotely interested in what side of the road you are parked on OP. It's pretty much 50:50 which way people park around here and I've never heard of anyone getting into trouble for it.

Dutch1e · 27/12/2024 18:46

It doesn't really matter if she was on a bicycle, an e-scooter, or a uranium-powered unicorn. And it doesn't really matter if you like her or not (which you've carefully explained you don't).

You doored a kid playing on the pavement and blamed her for it.

I think your machine is too big and heavy for you to handle and it should be taken away from you.

LoveMyPiano · 27/12/2024 19:06

Update 1.... I saw who I thought was the girl who fell off (not that "I hit") in the village earlier. This girl recognised me - as she was just about to start talking about me to her friend (I lipread what she said), and I stopped to speak to her and her friend.
Turns out that this one was the older sister of a younger one who was also out on her e-scooter yesterday.

So yes, there are some (more than these two -) who look similar and dress identically.

Update 2 - will be a diagram, for clarity.

I do not like the behaviour of many of the children around here. Behaviour - not THEM, as people (for what it matters).

You should see me with a Tractor!

If she was dressed from head to toe in black and it was getting dark, how can you be sure she wasn't there, it might be you just didn't see her?

Yes? That you did hit.

The pavement is pedestrians, not illegal electric scooters. The fault lies with the girls parents.
Natural selection.

ForReasonsUnknown · 27/12/2024 19:35

I did not hit her. She ran into the car door.
What I am saying is, there is now confusion over who the one who fell off her scooter actually is.
I thought it was the girl I encountered today, but it wasn't, as she said she wasn't at home/riding around yesterday (she was on a scooter today but not the same one apparently). It MAY have been her younger (!) sister.

The girl was riding an illegal scooter, not playing.
If the police were interested in this incident (unlikely), they might have words with the OP, but they would be more likely to seize the illegally ridden scooter.

Really? 8 year old child? Disgusting comment.

Yes it is disgusting thar her parents allow her to ride round the pavements on a motorised scooter endangering pedestrians.
Why not let her drive the car or buy her a motorbike?

TheWonderhorse · 27/12/2024 20:12

Does anyone know it was her scooter, paid for by her parents? Is it not possible she's had a go of a friend's without permission?

There are so many assumptions being made about the girl and her family on here. Jeez! If the OP had taken her home then perhaps we'd have had the information and OP would know what situation she was in.

I don't care who's at fault really, as the responsible adult in the situation, the girl should have been taken home and the accident explained to the people best able to prevent it happening again.

Your comment was about an eight year old child, a child. You seriously need to reflect on what adult ever says that . Disgusting comment, hang your head. Honestly the ignorance is astonishing.
