Last minute weigh in from DH irritating as hell

Spent Xmas eve with DH's family, they are from the continent and it's the main celebration day for them. His mum usually packs us up with an excessive amount of leftovers.

I told DH that's fine but that I wanted our main meal today, xmas day, to not be leftovers (plus more traditional to my upbringing, when we ate his families traditional meal yesterday). I shared my Christmas meal menu plan with DH a good week ago I e. gave the opportunity to weigh in then. He also does the food shop so knew what we would and would not be having.

This afternoon he asks what we've having, says it sounds boring, because there is no meat. I had told him I was planning to cook a vegetarian roast (nut roast plus trimmings) because we'll have had so much meat the day before and sent home with us, plus we eat vegetarian food all the time so not unusual for us.

Feeling really pissed off and demotivated to cook now. I will do it for myself, to have the meal I want, but wtf.

Is it me or is his attitude rude and entitled (YANBU)?
Or am I missing something here?! (YABU)

Otherwise had been having a lovely day, so annoyed that he's said this.

YANBU

It’s not like it was a surprise and he had a full week to say something or barest minimum get something else if he wasn’t keen on the choice.

I’d leave him to his own devices and enjoy what I decided on. You don’t have to eat the same foods.

Poodleville · 25/12/2024 17:27

Thanks for comments. He's apologised for what it's worth and agreed it was a shitty comment to make especially on Chritsmas day. I would really like to kick that entitlement that surfaces around meals.

To be fair, I'd be disappointed with a nut roast at Christmas.

If you do the food shop too and knew, wouldn’t you simply pick up something else then instead of complain?

MyLoftySwan · 25/12/2024 17:42

As a vegetarian I'd appreciate your effort so I'm on my way, what time do you want me?

Jk987 · 25/12/2024 17:58

If it's just the two of you then you should both have what you want. I can't imagine spending hours cooking anything at 5pm on Christmas Day!

Why is ‘only for two’ odd when you’re just a couple? DH and I are only two people and we had a delicious meal, at the time we wanted it. Should we have gone out and rounded up four more strangers to make it worthwhile?

Why odd? Who else should they cook for, it sounds like they are a couple?

I find it odd to cook at 10 am and eat at 2! We have a brunch at 10, then play with new toys, go for a big walk/ bike ride, I swam in the river, and then came home and finished cooking at 4.30. Ate at 6. Cooking and eating all day seems so boring to me...

Did the op say she was doing hours of cooking?

I've just done dinner for me and DH - it took about an hour (elapsed time not constant work) because it included roast potatoes. Less work than 'all the trimmings'.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 25/12/2024 19:29

He should have spoken up a week ago when you told him you were planning to cook a nut roast as the main meal on Christmas day. I mean nobody really wants that, and I say that as a vegetarian, but on the day is too late to complain.

MamaWeasel · 25/12/2024 19:30

Can he not just have some leftover meat from yesterday with his nutroast?

yes, i think you plan is balanced and good. I wish more meat eaters were moderate and mindful.
