Worst gifts ever

TribeofFfive · 25/12/2024 14:11

DHs grandmother. She is 80. Very much of sound mind and has bought a lovely, thoughtful gift for DD.
DS aged 7 has… a multipack of dairylea dunkers. My face didn’t lie when he opened them and she said “oh Marie (DH mum, her daughter) said he likes them.
DS2 aged 5 got a duvet cover. It’s plain blue. Her explanation was that she was told me recently decorated his bedroom and it’s blue.

I’m gobsmacked. The boys were good sports but wtf?!?
AIBU to think these are shit gifts?

Give her a break, she's 80 and clearly didn't put thought to it but is that the only gifts your kids will receive? Honestly much worse things to be bothered over.

LittleRedRidingHoody · 25/12/2024 14:24

Not gonna lie, DS would be more pleased with dairylea dunkers than most things 😂 Added of bonus of it's something savoury instead of constant sweets! It sounds like maybe she tried to do 3 thoughtful gifts and missed the mark on 2 of them. Bedding the colour of a recently decorated room, and what's perceived as a 'special' or favoured food are much more thoughtful than a gift card etc!

PrincessAnne4Eva · 25/12/2024 14:24

It sounds like you don't spend any time with her so she has no idea what your children like to get it for them? In which case the solution is to see her more so she gets to know you all better. If that's wrong then they are shit gifts, but if she's relying on MIL giving her info about what the kids like then you're not ever going to be onto a winner here because she's always getting third hand info.

PoloSusan · 25/12/2024 14:25

Oh come on the laugh is priceless!

Suzuki76 · 25/12/2024 14:26

Were they even kept in the fridge?!

SilviaDaisyPouncer · 25/12/2024 14:28

Tbh, my son would have been delighted with a multi pack of Dunkers. But surely there have been refrigeration issues?

Norder · 25/12/2024 14:29

We have a great grandma like this, she is the loveliest person but really misses the mark with gift giving. It's fun opening her gifts to see what it is this year, my favourite is a pair of left hand gloves from a few years ago, later found out MIL got a pair of right hands. It's a bit of fun but the thought is appreciated and she is always genuinely thanked.

YabbaDabbaDooooo · 25/12/2024 14:30

Bless her, you can tell whose grandmother she is, otherwise you might be a bit more understanding!

You couldn’t be more wrong but ok. She wasn’t relying on info either. It was more a passing comment she’s caught on to. She knows very well what they like as she’s here every single Sunday without fail. Never mind. Was slightly lighthearted, probably needed to point that out eh!

The boys were great! Big smiles and hugs for grandma! The dunkers went straight into the fridge. She really is lovely and I was just so shocked and she usually is right on the mark. It’s definitely one to laugh at. MIL and I shared a chuckle and a “bless” it’s not a nasty atmosphere, just sheer confusion! We are close enough that she too will probably laugh at this by this evening.

Definitely not and it’s not that kind of situation. We’re very close and see her weekly.

MIL hatred.

If she was your gran instead of your husband's you might be more understanding, or given her age find it quite endearing.

You’re way off the mark. Read previous comments and maybe have a wine.

I meant if it was her 80 year old gran, rather than her husband's.

Double MIL hating Wink

mickandrorty · 25/12/2024 14:41

I'll never forget when nan got my DD a duvet cover for Christmas! Nan asked her if she liked it and DD turned around and said 'Its not what i asked for' I wanted the ground to swallow me it was so embarrassing. she was only about 4 so she was only telling the truth luckily she is a bit more tactful 15 years on.

menohnopausal · 25/12/2024 14:46

You really think these are the "worst gifts ever"? You've had a sheltered life, my child.

Honestly as a child some of my favourite and most memorable presents were from a great aunt who bought the most batshit items you could imagine.
My dad once got a CD of different car engine sounds (he has never shown the slightest interest in cars beyond owning one to drive to work) and aged 8 I got a tin opener and some sparkly sticky backed plastic.
My brothers and I loved guessing and then seeing what Auntie Hazel would buy, it was far more interesting than another selection box (although they were also greatly appreciated 😂)

arcticpandas · 25/12/2024 14:53

"shit gifts" from an 80 year old grandma. Not nice OP.

I bet those kids would still eat them though, however, they’ve been stored

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 25/12/2024 15:01

I couldn't really complain about presents from a very elderly lady. She has tried her best to buy things she believes your children would enjoy.

It's when your partner buys you dairylea dunkers and a duvet cover you need to worry!
