To be annoyed that my mum has broken the tumble dryer.

I have a 4 month old baby so we are doing a lot of laundry at the moment!

My mum is staying for Chsitmas. She put on a load of laundry that included some baby clothes but also various bit and pieces of hers, including several bras. The dryer started making a god awful noise and it turns out there is a bra underwire stuck in the back.

Mum is claiming vociferously that it can’t have been her that’s broken it. I’ve not tried to blame her in the least and have cheerfully played along saying it must have been in there for ages. But AIBU to be privately pissed offf that she’s not at least apologised?

I know it’s not a blame game and I’d never expect her to pay or anything but I’m breastfeeding ffs none of my bras have had underwire for bloody months. It’s a huge faff with a baby right before Christmas and I’d feel much less hacked off if she’d just fronted it up. Tell me I’m being a cow (She was washing clothes for my baby, I know. I known)

These things happen, I really don't see it as her fault.

nottoplan · 24/12/2024 03:19

Yup I would be annoyed but tbf these things do happen and usually at the most inconvenient times

on a practical note try gently running your hand around the inside drum and see if you can feel it it may not be easy to see or feel but I have done this before and managed to wiggle it back out again took ages to get a grip of virtually nothing but easy once you get it , think I used tweezers to get the end initially

don’t try using it as it without removing the wire as it will put holes in everything

Pippa12 · 24/12/2024 03:24

I’d be cross with the situation but I wouldn’t be cross at your mum or expect an apology. It’s really not her fault.

Ohhhthedrama · 24/12/2024 03:25

While it is a little annoying, tumble dryers are a pretty simple machine & easy to fix. Just YouTube it. I managed to change the belt on mine without much trouble.

GravyBoatWars · 24/12/2024 04:12

I’d be annoyed by the timing and the inconvenience - why do things always seem to break (or get clogged or whatever) during the holidays?

Doesn't sound like your mum did anything unreasonable or owes an apology. She didn’t dump a load of crayons or rocks in there, just some clothes. It’s bad luck.

NiftyPeachDreamer · 24/12/2024 04:24

Ugh she sounds hard work. Did you invite her or did she invite herself?

I’f ask her to pay to fix it.

I don’t think she should put several under wired bras in someone else’s tumble dryer.

dorsetdoll · 24/12/2024 04:27

Switch the power to the machine off and then have a feel around . Hopefully this will be all you need to fix it. But if not do a call out and get it fixed asap. Until then use a laundrette to dry things.

Just use the wind.

Really? I’ve never heard this before and have been chucking underwired bras in the tumble dryer for the last 30 odd years without any mishap.

I think YABU OP - give your DM a break, these things clearly happen.

ThisIsSockward · 24/12/2024 04:58

I'd be annoyed, yes. I'm surprised she thought it was okay to put a wired bra in the tumble dryer, as it seems likely to ruin the bra, if nothing else. As others have said, it may be possible to fix it yourself, but either way, I think it's more typical for a parent to accept responsibility and feel guilty than to jump to defend themselves and avoid paying for repair or replacement. That's what I'd expect—a slightly sheepish apology and an offer to fix it or pay to have it repaired.

MintSpiesAtTheReddy · 24/12/2024 05:53

I wouldn't tumble a bra for the bra's sake. It'd never occur to me it shouldn't be tumbled for the dryer's sake!

Same. I don’t put delicates in the dryer but not because of the dryer’s safety. And if grandma was washing baby things I’d guess it was all being done on gentle cycle and low heat.

A wire coming out and wedging itself in just the right spot is unlucky, not gross negligence.

GrumpyPanda · 24/12/2024 06:05

All those saying the mum did nothing wrong, underwire bras are exactly why mesh bags are a thing. For the washer, that is. Don't see why you'd put them in the dryer in the first place unless you have an urgent desire to go bra-shopping again soon 😉

I do agree. Of all the appliances I think tumble dryers are the easiest to diy

GrazeConcern · 24/12/2024 07:31

I think you’re being a bit OTT, I’ve had 2 children and survived without a tumble drier for 13 years so far. It was a mistake, have you even had a go at fixing it? And if you think a 4 month old makes a lot of washing wait until they’re a 13 year old playing rugby 3 times a week! 🫣🫣🫣🫣

saraclara · 24/12/2024 07:38

She didn't break the tumble drier. An item that she put in, did.

I had no idea that underwired bras shouldn't go in a drier for this reason.

Exactly. I'm surprised at the voting.

CactusUmbrella · 24/12/2024 08:06

In my head it's always been a rule that you don't tumble dry bras, and I thought it was because of the underwire! I'm so shocked to discover this isn't actually a universal rule! My mum taught me not to.

SpanThatWorld · 24/12/2024 08:11

I don't tumble dry my bras because they tangle everything up. It had never occurred to me that they might rupture, spit their wire out and thereby sabotage the dryer.
Who knew?

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 24/12/2024 08:12

It was her fault and I’d be pissed off at the lack of apology. Ok, OP might be able to fix it, but who’s got time for that on Christmas Eve.

KneesUnder · 24/12/2024 08:17

Tumble drying bras isn’t unusual. Sounds like an annoying situation but I wouldn’t blame your mum.

No why pp is talking about “hard work” and asking who invited whom. Bit of projection going on there maybe.

luckylavender · 24/12/2024 08:18

Who on earth puts bras in a tumble dryer? Absolutely no need and no good for the bra.
