To think a 3:20 finish is absurd?

Itsr · 23/12/2024 19:28

It’s mostly mums at the school gates. Because the 3:20 finish worked well at a time when most women stayed at home.

now most women work, which means two parents working, why does school finish ar 3:20?! Yes I know there are after school classes etc but some don’t go on for too long and they also cost.

what actually is the reason why the school day isn’t aligned with a work day (like it is with most private schools!)

Chill out.

Private schools go to co-curricular activities for the end of the day - so, essentially, clubs. As you can do in state schools. I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but private schools also cost - and rathe4 more than an after school club in a state school.

Mine didn't in the '90s; nor does it now. The school day (lessons) went on 'til 18:00.

Cos teachers need 2 hours at the end of the day to prattle on about how bad their day was and how hard they have it.

😂

I’d say it’s unusual in that. Still more expensive than wrap around care though, I imagine.

HowhardcanitB · 24/12/2024 23:48

Maybe as a society we should dramatically shorten the adult workday rather than extend the school day. It is ridiculous that the two don’t work more harmoniously.

Mere1 · 24/12/2024 23:53

They employ more staff, which costs more money. The ‘official’ school day is not 8-6. They can arrive before the academic curriculum is taught. They can stay after it is finished and partake of optional extras. Fees take this in to account. Your taxes would increase were state schools to offer this to all. You have no concept of education beyond your own needs.

Mere1 · 24/12/2024 23:53

Oh dear me.

I’m not being nasty. And it’s not a matter of opinion. The curriculum has changed repeatedly in the last 30 years. You’ve been trying to say I’m talking nonsense backing yourself up with an either fictional sister or a fictional opinion of a real sister. The curriculum has changed. Nobody working in education would say it hasn’t. You don’t work in education but feel able to state an ‘opinion’ repeatedly when the facts mean your opinion is wrong.

I didn't say what sector I worked in and wouldn't on here.

And I've got no reason to 'lie'. Anyone's opinion is valid, so my opinion is not wrong. And I've not said you were talking nonsense, nothing of the sort.

Said happy Christmas but you don't want to raise a glass and say "cheers" in return?

We had to be in school for 8.45 a.m. (and it was an hour's bus ride away from where I lived, with a 10 min walk after getting off the bus).

Schools don't all start and end at the same time and they didn't in the 70s. I was at school in the 70s and we finished at 3.15

Zonder · 25/12/2024 00:02

Tabbyandwhite · 24/12/2024 22:45

She's here now and says Happy Christmas x

Bizarre. I'm a teacher and I disagree with her. The curriculum has changed a lot.

Just as well everyone has their own experiences and opinions to be respectes :)

Opinions are interesting things. @@cardibach has posted some facts there about curriculum changes and my experience matches that timeline. I wonder what kind of a HT your sister is to have such a different opinion from the facts of the timeline above.

Solaire18381 · 25/12/2024 00:06

Agree entirely OP. Everything about school seems stuck in the 70's.

I'd love to know how that school manage. And the poor children. I've not come across any private schools who carry on school day / lessons until 6pm personally.

Sister is a HT. Agrees the curriculum and subjects haven't changed for 30+ years!

I'm a teacher and agree.

When I was at grammar school (1970s) it was 4.15 finish. Ridiculous that the school day is so short nowadays, no wonder children finish school without a really good grounding and education.

Agree

I wouldn't call AI content facts. But yes I have many facts & experiences myself.

If we want to have more people working and financing the NHS, etc., then I think it's a great idea to extend the school day to cover normal working hours. It doesn't need to be more lessons, or more hours for teachers, could be PE, could be all sorts of constructive things, with different staff. Private schools and other countries do this already, we could see what works well elsewhere.

AllTheChaos · 25/12/2024 00:24

Itsr · 23/12/2024 20:38

@80smonster i don’t want to have to pay fees but feel like I’ve got no option

It’s exactly that. In order for state schools to offer longer hours of optional extras to take the day to 6pm, as fee paying schools do, they would need more staff. That costs money that state schools simply don’t have. Teachers at our school are usually in by 7.30pm, and don’t leave till well after 6 as it is (state schools). So the choice is simple: pay for choice or accept the state funded offering.

Agree but it would probably involve paying more tax, which generally people are against!

MummytoE · 25/12/2024 00:31

Just send your Kids to private school fgs, everyone else finds a way to manage with the system the way it is . I think you just like a moan

Joelle84 · 25/12/2024 00:31

school timings do not work in todays world really. Luckily my primary offer breakfast club plus after school and late stay. If needed your child is covered from 730am right through to 530pm. I use after school and late stay and im spending around £200 a month on that.

RecklessGoddess · 25/12/2024 01:08

You do realise that the teaching staff (and other school staff) are there before the kids and after most kids have left, then the teachers have more work to do at home, and most school staff even families of their own to care for, right?

CalmMintReader · 25/12/2024 01:23

Because kids would be exhausted and they are the most important surely? Once they are teens they can be at home alone if you need them to so to expect little kids to be at school for 8 or 9 hours a day is just asking for exhausted, ill, stressed kids. I have always either been self employed or a stay at home mum (lucky I know but also I did choose it) so I’d have hated them being at school that long. It should be a choice. They had/have activities on some days after school too. After school clubs etc are there for those who need a longer day. I have two at state and one at private and the private school finishes at 4 so not much difference. They can stay later but that’s included in the extortionate fees! How do you expect state schools to pay for all those extra hours? Life for kids shouldn’t all be about work, they need chill out and extra curricular time too.

cherish123 · 25/12/2024 01:25

Because school is to educate not provide childcare.
