To think a 3:20 finish is absurd?

Itsr · 23/12/2024 19:28

It’s mostly mums at the school gates. Because the 3:20 finish worked well at a time when most women stayed at home.

now most women work, which means two parents working, why does school finish ar 3:20?! Yes I know there are after school classes etc but some don’t go on for too long and they also cost.

what actually is the reason why the school day isn’t aligned with a work day (like it is with most private schools!)

Private schools finish same time. Rest is afterschool clubs

@Tiredforfive45 as I’ve said above, how does the private sector students and teachers manage a 8-6 day?

Because they'll hire others to do the clubs? Specialists in whatever is being taught. And also, private schools don't have to teach the National Curriculum or have ofsted inspections. They also have about half the number of pupils per class, or less, which equals a shed load less planning and marking. As do the shorter terms.

Send your kids to boarding school then you can just forget about them for 38 weeks of the year. Still, that's 14 weeks you've got them hanging around like a bad smell, isn't it? Ho-hum.

School timings don't affect me but I agree they are outdated.

Saying that it also appears that the secondary curriculum has changed very little since I was at school!

Unless you are very young this isn’t the case. Gove changed the curriculum massively.

@AllProperTeaIsTheft they should work for all working parents rather than making life harder for women. Luckily I can afford private but don’t think I should have to!

I’m not British and I’m shocked how long the school day is here. I remember it was very rare for me to be in school till 3pm, and I was shattered on that day. Most days children in my country finish at 12-1 but have less time off school.
My son is in a private school in England and I hate that he’ll be staying till 4.30 when in Y3. When im working my brain definitely slows down after 3pm so i cant imagine a 7yo is very productive.

Not true, in my son’s private school reception is 8.20-3.30, Y1-2 is till 4.15 and from Y3 they’re in school till 4.45 - a very long day! Not sure how they find the energy for an afterschool club

Well I'm thinking all subjects the same, and yes I recognise the modules within the subjects from when I was at school.

Also subjects KS3 same as I had to study. One lesson of Drama a week year round, food tech/product design rotational per term. PE 2 hours a week (same sports as I did). DCs hates all those subjects and doesn't see the point of any of them as did I at the time, and can't wait to drop them obs will have to continue PE.

All other subjects the same, so yes like when I was at school.

Cnf1 · 24/12/2024 20:58

Private school teachers are usually less qualified and only have a job because they are willing to do more for less money. I know, I work in one.

cardibach · 24/12/2024 20:59

Why would you expect the actual subjects to change @Tabbyandwhite ? They represent areas of academic and practical study. The curriculum within them has changed massively. Not always for the better.

Tabbyandwhite · 24/12/2024 21:00

Sister is a HT. Agrees the curriculum and subjects haven't changed for 30+ years!

When I was at grammar school (1970s) it was 4.15 finish. Ridiculous that the school day is so short nowadays, no wonder children finish school without a really good grounding and education.

oh for goodness sake! Not really!

BonniesSlave · 24/12/2024 21:27

Work should align with children not the other way round

OonaStubbs · 24/12/2024 21:36

Why should work align with children? Should the country shut down at 3pm?

DrSK2 · 24/12/2024 21:38

Because it is the work day being unnecessarily too long, not the school day. Expecting human beings to work 8 hours per day until they are 70-80 is ridiculous.

Eml7 · 24/12/2024 21:45

Private school finish no more than half an hour later. The children who are not picked up then stay for after school school clubs/wraparound care - same as state schools.

RockOrAHardplace · 24/12/2024 21:58

In the late 70's I started school at 8.15 and finished at 3.15pm with a 20 minute lunch break. I came from a family where both parents worked, like most of my friends families and we either walked to/from school or got the bus. We always met up with friends and did the journey together. We were latch key kids and the couple next door used to listen out for us until mum got home just after 5pm. There was no such thing as after school clubs unless you were in a sports team in which case once a week you stayed behind for an hour one night per week.

Dontmakemethegrinch · 24/12/2024 22:00

Don't move to Germany op, school finishes at 12.30 in some places.

Maybe because teachers also have kids to get home to, and also because kids are a parents responsibility and not the teachers…

i know no actual teacher who would say that. Part of the recent industrial action was about continual change, so excuse me if I isn’t believe you.

She's here now and says Happy Christmas x

cardibach · 24/12/2024 22:46

Of course she is. If she’s actually an HT and actually knows what’s going on in her classrooms she absolutely wouldn’t be saying that. It’s a simple matter of fact that the curriculum has changed massively.

Why are you being so nasty?

You have you're opinions, I'll have mine on the curriculums. I don't care to argue with you. So Happy Christmas

Totally agree. Secondary education especially needs a complete overhaul. Nothing much has changed.

I’m not being nasty. And it’s not a matter of opinion. The curriculum has changed repeatedly in the last 30 years. You’ve been trying to say I’m talking nonsense backing yourself up with an either fictional sister or a fictional opinion of a real sister. The curriculum has changed. Nobody working in education would say it hasn’t. You don’t work in education but feel able to state an ‘opinion’ repeatedly when the facts mean your opinion is wrong.

It has changed massively. Just look at the image I posted earlier. The subject names won’t change because they are recognised areas of study. Some have been added, of course. The contents of the subject curricula have changed over and over.
