To think that Xmas food shopping isn't a sodding family day out?

loveawineloveacrisp · 22/12/2024 14:47

Just been to M&S for final food shop and the bloody place was over run with entire families shopping together. Just why? If the kids are old enough to be left then they shouldn't be traipsing around and getting in the way when the place is crowded as it is at this time of year.

And as for people who can't drive the right way round a one way car park: kindly fuck off and don't drive if you can't follow road signs.

That's all. Now can someone please pass the 🍷

@K0OLA1D I’m in Scotland and have two 24 hour Adsa in driving distance.

My DH suggested we go together. I am leaving him and 6 month old at home - couldn't think of anything worse than dealing with christmas m&s with Mr browse a lot and Mr cry a lot 🤣

Mine would be Mr spendalot and then stuff going out of date before it gets eaten. I avoid shopping with him like the plague.

TiramisuCheesecake · 22/12/2024 15:42

YANBU. At any time of year but especially now, it's a one adult job. The other adult stays at home with the children. The last place kids want to be the weekend before CHristmas is in a supermarket.

Would love to hear from any posters who think letting their kids get in the way in a supermarket is a fantastic afternoon out.

Well you learn something new everyday!

The kids aren't the issue, it's other adults! Taking up 2 spots with their SUV when people are driving around looking for parking spots, stopping in the middle of the aisles for a chat, parking their trolley in front of a Christmas necessity e.g. gravy and then walking off down the aisle, taking ages to decide if they want a product whilst it is clear you are trying to get to that product and they are just totally oblivious.

I took my husbands grandma to do hers today, he had a work thing so it was me, a 93 year old, a three year old and a nine year old, at least the nine year old was useful. The three year old was bored and did nothing but moan, grandma apparently knew every single human in the shop and had to talk to every single of them. She had a list, but had to personally choose each item so I couldn’t park her in an aisle and get all the bits myself. She didn’t have her reading glasses on, my Swedish is still a bit ropey, so we relied on the nine year old to read the descriptions and to make sure no one dies (allergies). I forgot bags too, and the supermarket had run out of bags, so that added to the lovely fun day out.

You really deserve a lovely reward for that. Sounds like a living nightmare.

This made me chuckle. I rarely shop with Mr Browse (when the kids were young he’d stay at home with them or take them for a coffee and cake while I shopped ).

He is worse than any child in the supermarket. Getting lost, dilly dallying and picking up random stuff….

I do feel sorry for those children being dragged round looking so fed up. If you don’t need to bring them it’s surely better they are at home or doing something fun.

fitzwilliamdarcy · 22/12/2024 15:46

I had to go into a supermarket to get wrapping paper this weekend and it was like a kids’ playground in there - kids running around screaming, hitting one another with things pulled from the shelves, throwing toys around. Parents nowhere to be seen of course.

I grabbed what I needed and left - can’t understand why so many people are now like this these days!

Well there's already plenty of replies saying I'm the unreasonable one 🙄

I’m with you OP. Got stuck behind a family of mum, dad and 2 older teen/young adult daughters arguing about sodding cheese. Made me very happy that I tell my lot to add to the list what they want and leave them at home. I know that’s not an option for everyone though.

GoldenLegend · 22/12/2024 15:48

What I can't be doing with is the middle-aged blokes, standing staring blankly at a shelf of groceries as if they've never seen one before. They're oblivious to all the people trying to get round them, as if they were actually a different species.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 22/12/2024 15:48

As usual Dh and I are going at the crack of dawn tomorrow for when M&S opens at 7, for the turkey and a few bits. I could go alone, but it’s nice to have a porter for heavy stuff. It’ll be bedlam, of course, but even more bedlam-ish later.

FrazzledHippy · 22/12/2024 15:49

I agree. SIL wanted me to go do the Xmas food shop today with her, her DH and FIL whilst my DH minded the kids. I politely declined!

Do you have kids @loveawineloveacrisp OP?

You honestly think most of these children were there because we love dragging them round a packed supermarket immediately before Christmas with blocked aisles, huge queues and stressy tutty people?

I'll be taking DTwins (4) to the local garden centre tomorrow, and I'm already dreading it. And that's nowhere near as busy as the supermarket will be. If I had any option for them not to come, believe me...

90%+ are there because they have to be.

FutureFry · 22/12/2024 15:49

What an utterly bizarre post.

The UK really is so un child friendly it's laughable.

rommymummy · 22/12/2024 15:50

I take my 3yo to the supermarket most days, nursery is closed, no family centre activities. It's something to do, also like to go to supermarket cafe. DH comes aswel on weekend.

Lemonyyy · 22/12/2024 15:50

I go at 4am to avoid exactly this 😂 Asda in December is hell!

Crunchymum · 22/12/2024 15:50

I'm going at 7am tomorrow (and leaving the kids at home!!)

loveawineloveacrisp · 22/12/2024 15:51

@LePetitMaman I have grown up kids. And I specifically said in my post if the kids are old enough to be left at home then they should be.

I don’t normally shop at Asda but Tesco closes at 10pm tonight and I won’t have the car in time.

You’ve hit the nail on the head …children are the least of the problems in a supermarket this time of year!! And there’s a particular type of customer in M&S who’s oblivious to everyone else in the shop; I say oblivious, I mean rude and self centred. Give me children in there any day!!

Exactly this.

I get far more pissed off with idiot adults gawping at shelves as if they've never seen a sprout before. And always M&S is full of slow walkers of my mother's age, who have to shop in a pair. Stop in front of fucking everything and contemplate "Do we need this?..."

They're the ones who treat it like a day out.

Here's a novel idea. Make a list. Get out the bloody way!

DH and I like to both go so we can choose the food together. So we have to take our DC with us as they’re not old enough to be left at home alone!

I can’t get my head around this! Can that not be a conversation had at home- what do you fancy eating, oh I’ll have a look on the website. Shopping with kids is not something I’d do by choice.., although I often have to take them as my DH works opposite hours to me..

plus! It’s even slower for others if you’re hanging about mulling over what to buy and “deciding together” 🤣

TiramisuCheesecake · 22/12/2024 15:55

SoySaucy · 22/12/2024 15:28

Why do you have any more right to be in a supermarket than a child does?

just unclench and you’ll feel much happier. What a bizarre thing to be uptight/annoyed about!

The OP is spending money.

The child is not spending money, they are just there as an appendage to the customer.

Would have thought that was obvious but clearly not.
