To think that Xmas food shopping isn't a sodding family day out?

Just been to M&S for final food shop and the bloody place was over run with entire families shopping together. Just why? If the kids are old enough to be left then they shouldn't be traipsing around and getting in the way when the place is crowded as it is at this time of year.

And as for people who can't drive the right way round a one way car park: kindly fuck off and don't drive if you can't follow road signs.

That's all. Now can someone please pass the 🍷

I disagree, I was in a supermarket earlier and saw a family out doing the food shop, kids were fully involved and choosing bits and bobs - it made me smile tbh, but I'm generally not bothered by other people's choice of who goes/doesn't go to the shops. I dont know why others are. Oh yes wait, it's because you want your experience to be made easier.

Erm well yes hence the thread it's not a bloody family day out ! Couldn't agree more OP and that's any time of year imo

CatamaranViper · 22/12/2024 20:27

We all go together. DH, DS and I. We love it. It's nice to walk up and down the aisles, looking at everything and buying what everyone wants for Xmas. I don't see how us having DS there makes it worse for other people.

AudHvamm · 22/12/2024 20:29

What a mad read. One of the reasons I love mumsnet is because it continually teaches me there are people out there with totally batshit views.

I used to love going to B&Q or the big supermarket with my dad at the weekend.

Undethetree · 22/12/2024 20:29

LOL at people going out to public places and being outraged to find other (albeit lesser) members of the public also there.

Yep! You are traffic. I am stuck in traffic.

If you read the full thread you will see that many supermarkets in Scotland are open till 11pm.

I don't live in Scotland and referred to England, where the law says shops over 3000 sq ft must close at 4 on a Sunday. Always knew the Scots were irreligious! I blame John Knox.

bostonchamps · 22/12/2024 17:50

@Grammarnut I have a choice of Waitrose, big Tesco, big Sainsburys, an Aldi and an M&S foodhall until 6pm every Sunday. All within a twenty minute drive radius.

In England?

shootingstar1 · 22/12/2024 20:44

I was thinking the same thing this afternoon when I was in the supermarket .

I also had to visit the minor injuries department at my local hospital last weekend and noticed the same thing . It was after 9pm and a family walked in with mum, dad, gran, teenager and child (about 7yrs) so the doctor could have a look at teenagers twisted ankle. It's was freezing outside and the waiting room was mobbed . Why bring everyone to the hospital? Weird 😐

Or 11-5.

Yanbu I work in a supermarket and it's been so busy today and iv nearly tripped over multiple kids who are rolling on the floor or who have ran into me or straight infront of me. Iv heard nothing but kids screaming, parents screaming at their kids and even one kid getting walloped by his dad. The majority of these kids have had 2 adults if not 3 with them. I also can't believe how most parents don't tell there kids off when their getting in the staffs way or blocking aisles or entrances and exits while other customers and staff are trying to get past. One kid threw a can which hit an elderly woman's leg and his mum thought it was hilarious all she said was he's such a little shit while laughing.

Yep! You are traffic. I am stuck in traffic.

It's kind of different to traffic though.
Supermarkets would be potentially much less hectic if people were shopping on their own/in pairs rather than a whole family. (A car in a traffic jam will be clogging up the road whether its got 1 or 4 people in it) Of course there's no rules or restrictions (it's not 2020) but some of the excuses about why kids "have" to go are a bit sketchy.
I've seen kids on scooters or heelies, in the supermarket before. There's no way that that isn't anything but unnecessarily annoying!

My 15 yo has always hated shopping (for anything) he still gets a decent selection of food he likes by just adding things to a list. He doesn't have to be there to see/touch it himself! And I know him well enough to guess at random new/different items he will probably like.

In an M&S food hall? Were they perhaps buying gifts of pigs in blankets or stuffing balls?

Maybe nice chocolate biscuits or a tin of shortbread for a grandparent. I took my DC Xmas gift shopping and they'd look around until they found things they thought DGP's would like.

I've been and took DD(11) yesterday. She was my runner so I just walked down the middle aisle and told her what to get in each in. It was very efficient.

There should be a holding pen for partners who don't typically do the shop though. The amount of clueless people stood looking at shelves, getting in the way saying "I can't see it Sheila!" makes the whole shop infuriating.

Or, even worse, on their phone to someone, describing what they can see and seeking advice on what to buy. Not a Christmas moan but I also detest those so-called environmentally favoured cabinets with doors, usually Lidl or Aldi, one person stands with the door open conversing on their phone about what to buy and in the meantime no-one else can reach for anything.

This elderly lady would have thrown/kicked it back at him to see just how funny she found it.

Omg I've seen it all now! We Scots are irreligious 😂

Remaker · 22/12/2024 21:26

I am normally pretty tolerant but yesterday there was a family with two parents and two small kids (u/5s) riding scooters in the supermarket. Flying around blind corners etc. I confess I glared and tutted.

And I generally find it irritating to get stuck behind a family of 5 while they have a mid-aisle debate over how many packets of crisps to buy and which flavours.

berksandbeyond · 22/12/2024 21:26

3 of us in M&S earlier, don't see how that's a problem! We all wanted to have input in what we eat over Christmas. Don't be such a Scrooge!

berksandbeyond · 22/12/2024 21:29

You should have some wine and crisps and cheer the fuck up

MereDintofPandiculation · 22/12/2024 21:38

`Or, even worse, on their phone to someone, describing what they can see and seeking advice on what to buy. Well, yeah, instead of giving DH a list and have him blocking up the aisles, you might as well go with him, bringing the kids, obviously.

It's surprising how many children are eating treats in the trolley that they haven't paid for - I wonder if the parents even do pay for them? It was something I was adamant my children couldn't do!

I definitely bought more shit when I had them with me though!

Oh, I hate that. It's just wrong. A hair's breadth away from stealing. I think supermarkets should have staff that ask if it's been paid for. Do the parents really keep the wrapper and scan it? I bet they don't.

I totally get your point, but OTOH it's quite sweet that the whole family came along to support one member throughout that difficult moment in their life! 😂

I would say there's a pretty high chance that the wrapper will have disappeared by the time they get to the till!

My youngest once nicked a packet of jelly tots. I noticed the sugar round the trouser pockets and marched them to the till to confess! I'd hoped the employee would work with me on it but it was a young woman and she was totally bemused. I made the wee shit pay for them!

I've always assumed that it's because the father of the kid(s) doesn't want to have to look after them while mum does the shopping. And she won't trust him to do the shopping by himself!

That's not what op is on about it's the whole families with older children , both parents etc. I take my kids shopping if I have to but not if I can avoid it and it's not like a trip for pleasure taking ages and blocking up isles when it's busy
