I thought it was a tax issue, but when I put my gross salary in the HMRC online tax calculator and compared it to what I was actually paid- I was underpaid by a substantial amount in the ' gross ' section of my pay on my pay slips as reported to HMRC by the company.

What can I do about this ?

I might start by going to an accountant.

PosiePerkinPootleFlump · 21/12/2024 09:06

Were you contributing via salary sacrifice to a pension? As that would reduce your taxable pay

Nousernamesleftatall · 21/12/2024 09:07

Speak to payroll.

I have one! I have been trying to sort it out for ages but he's not done it.

Time to get a new one perhaps !

Wht deductions showed on your payslip, and did the net amount correspond to what you were paid? As well as PAYE you may have paid national insurance and a pension contribution.

You should be able to see the tax you have paid on your government gateway account (I think). If this is different to what is on your payslip then get on the phone to HMRC.

I don't know. I don't have any of those details. I need to contact the pension provider. I only have their name. Hopefully they'll be able to tell me.

Also check the tax code (should be on every payslip). You might have been on BR at some point which doesn’t give any tax free allowance. Usually HMRC refund the tax when tax code is updated but you may need to ask them to do this.

Stringervest · 21/12/2024 09:10

Contact your employer with a copy of your payslips and a copy of your employment contract asking for an explanation of the discrepancy. If you don't get an adequate explanation (and, if due, full backdated pay) i'd sue them in the small claims court. You might be able to do something through the employment tribunal too, I don't know.

Wolfpa · 21/12/2024 09:11

Have you added up the details on your payslip to see if it all matches?

Imissmypuppy · 21/12/2024 09:11

Can you tell us what your gross should have been and deductions for things like pensions and we can check the number too.

If the gross pay on your payslip (if paid monthly should be your annual salary - adjusted if part time - divided by 12) is less than on your employment contract then I would start by contacting the employer by email, attaching your contract and the payslips and ask them to look into it and get back to you.

Lilly11a · 21/12/2024 09:13

It's quite likely this is related to your pension contributions.

For ease I had a 50k salary and paid 10% via salary sacrifice - my gross would only show as 45k on HMRC and payslips

Ok so gross pay according to HMRC tax calculator should be 9166 and I received 8996.

It's not actually that different to be fair and there may be another reason.

On your Gateway Account, the figures will be for previous tax year ending April 2024. Have you had a pay rise since then, do you get paid monthly or every 4 weeks, this can change the gross pay. But either way gross pay x the number of months/weeks should add up to your total pay, if this is incorrect, then you need to raise it with them. With regards to deductions, apart from tax, NI, and pension, is there any student loan being deducted.

NowYouSee · 21/12/2024 09:17

My first thought is pension salary sacrifice. But no need to go in all guns blazing, contact the HR and ask them to help you understand the payslips.

Does the HMRC site agree to your P45 / P60?

Do you have your actual payslips? Check what they say

Hmrc gross pay won't include you pension deductions.

giddyg · 21/12/2024 09:30

@ForOpenLeader 110k which according to HMRC tax calculator should work our at around 6k a month and I only got 5.

Maybe it's the pension thing.
