Bizarre event for DC in school, confused

DC does well at school, usually top or near top of class. There was a test today and the teacher sent DC and 4 other kids to a different room to do the test, where they sat alone. DC said that 3 of the other kids had been accused of cheating previously, by the teacher, in front of the class, not sure about the 4th. No possibility DC cheats as DC usually does better than everyone around them. But one of the "mean" popular girls in the class said loudly to the class that everyone being sent to the other room were "cheaters" and the teacher said nothing, whether the teacher heard or not I am not sure.

DC said they were shocked about it all and found it hard to concentrate, and when they went back into the class DC asked the teacher why they had been moved, and the teacher said that the other children cheated, but that DC didn't cheat, it was DC's neighbour who copied from DC.

So DC gets sent into a different room instead of the child who copied from them, and DC has said that the person who commented on "cheaters" is now spreading shock horror rumours about DC cheating...

I really am completely discombobulated by this. I cannot see any logic or reason behind the teacher's actions, and they must have realised how the "mean" girls would react.

I have raised two concerns about this teacher already this year, legitimate concerns, after I had tried to communicate with the teacher informally, which were acted upon by the school, all then seemed peaceful for a few weeks, now this, so I assume this is all linked. My thoughts right now are wtf to be honest.

Maybe the teacher moved your child so the neighbour couldn’t cheat off them perhaps? How old are the class? I don’t think it’s relevant but I’m just wondering!

Seems an odd approach though. Why not move the child that was copying/cheating?

ShortyShorts · 20/12/2024 22:22

That's weird, I'd definitely be taking it up with the school after Christmas.

It sounds as though the teacher thinks your DC did the copying but can't prove it, otherwise why not send the other child?

But either way, the kids should've been given notice they were being moved, instead of having it sprung on them right before the test.

VoodooRajin · 20/12/2024 22:23

How do you know they are 'mean popular girls'? Bit of a childish phrase

Stillherestillpraying · 20/12/2024 22:28

Who the heck is giving tests on the last day of term anyway…

ExtraOnions · 20/12/2024 22:34

It will be old news by the time they go back after Christmas

Everydayimhuffling · 20/12/2024 22:38

Were they sent to sit alone with no teacher in the room with them? Because that's a nuts response to them cheating...

It's pretty hard to tell which kid has cheated when you get two identical papers, so the teacher may have just made a mistake.

The teacher told DC that they knew that they (DC) were not cheating and that they knew the child they sit next to does cheat as in the teacher said she had seen the other child look at DC's work. The children are moved around a lot and the teacher has accused other children of looking at DC's work.

I think it is awful talking to children about cheating in front of the class anyway. If children cheat it means they need extra help not humiliating in front of the class. But anyway, the teacher said that she did not suspect DC of cheating.

They have tests every week or so, DC does consistently well whomever they sit next to, and the teacher has said this.

Yes they were sent to sit alone with no teacher in the room. Totally nuts all round.

If the conversation went on that long, did your DC not get a chance to ask why they were being moved instead of the one who cheated?

Livinginadream · 20/12/2024 23:02

Sorry but are you sure your DC isnt lieing to you to cover thrmselves.

Shorthand, a girl who is popular but who is unkind to less confident children.

I thought you were talking about a primary aged kid. I would speak with the school with the presumption your dc isn't telling you the entire truth here.

Avatartar · 20/12/2024 23:16

I wonder if your DC is sensible and put in the other room for teacher to have a better chance of the other 3 behaving If copy cheat was there with the others they would possibly have messed about?

Maybe. DC is sensible and school has told me that disruptive children are sat with them. But pretty damn outrageous if so. DC is really upset about it.

Your child's teacher is discussing accusations of a fellow pupil cheating with your tween DC?

Yes
Has done more than once
Didn't correct the child who spoke out when she talked about the "cheaters"

Maybe an experiment to see if they try to copy off your DC?!

SausageinaBun · 20/12/2024 23:25

Were they supervised in the other room?

mouthpipette · 20/12/2024 23:30

I've taught in secondary schools for a number of years

and this sounds bizarre.
