To not let my sister bring her own meat on Christmas day!

1000 replies

FelizNavidadAmiga · 20/12/2024 21:33

First off, we are a strictly vegan household for moral reasons. I invited my sister for Christmas lunch as she is recently divorced and has nowhere else to go. I usually put on a magnificent spread with roast vegetables, tagine, stuffed peppers, vine leaves, falafel, home made hummus etc. My sister has just sent me a message saying she's going to bring her own chicken to cook. AIBU to say no way! I don't want chicken cooking in my nice clean vegan oven! Plus the smell makes me feel ill 🤢 I don't want to upset her as she's very sensitive at the moment but surely she can do without chicken for 1 day.

It just shows ignorance. For goodness sake even at the most basic level have these posters never been in an Indian restaurant? Even now after decades I still end up struggling to eat everything I've ordered.

not quite sure what Indian restaurants have to do with falafel and houmous.

I think will any meal it is the quantity served/ eaten that determines how full people will be

OakleyAnnie · 20/12/2024 22:57

ElinAlma · 20/12/2024 21:36

Not unreasonable to say no.
But unreasonable to call this food: roast vegetables, tagine, stuffed peppers, vine leaves, falafel, home made hummus etc, a magnificent spread.

That's very bog standard food and not anything magnificent for a festive meal.

Edited

How rude

Agix · 20/12/2024 22:58

I think your Christmas menu sounds fantastic OP! Can I come to dinner??

Could you perhaps make sis a fake meat vegan roast for herself as a compromise? Like quorn?

nocoolnamesleft · 20/12/2024 22:58

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 20/12/2024 22:56

I will be having roast pheasant on Christmas Day and have
venison, grouse and patridge in the freezer. The limitations imposed by vegan cooking come from unimaginative and limited cooks and poor cooking- not the ingredients.

I'd love to believe you. But I've endured a lot of vegan food, as I say including at allegedly excellent vegan establishments, and it's been universally disappointing.

Venicelagoon · 20/12/2024 22:58

Just tell her that the vegetarian food youre all having is all that there is and its all already agreed. It's lovely and that's the Christmas meal in your house. Nothing different. i.e. a tactful take it or leave it.

AbigaiIsParty · 20/12/2024 22:59

I'm vegan. Vegan household. Absolutely no no no way would anyone be cooking animal carcass here.

marmia1234 · 20/12/2024 22:53

Well there's no carbs, and hummus is just a dip..Didn't see any mention of dessert either.

What do you think the peppers are stuffed with?
Probably rice or couscous or something carb-y.

Separately - @Growlybear83 I'm still trying to work out what the problem could have been with the nutmeg?! Can't see why it wouldn't be halal.. Is this because it's hard to source organic nutmeg? (and do your relatives really only eat 100% certified organic. That's quite a challenge, and pretty pricey)

Only on Mumsnet would stuffed peppers and vine leaves be called ‘very bog standard food’

I'm confused by the suggestion that this meal will not be filling? I'm never hungry after a meal like that, there's always loads and it's not exactly a lightweight option.

None of it will fill you for long. Vegetables are mostly water, this meal contains hardly any carbohydrates or protein so after a couple of hours I'd feel hungry.
Very little fat too other than some oil the roasted veg are done in.
I dont call hummus and vine leaves etc a full meal, its snacky bits.

You would rather stay at home on your own at Christmas just so you can eat chicken?!?!?!

If that was the menu then yes I don’t really like that plus Christmas Day is about a nice roast

Well, that's not much good to a vegan. What would you cook for them?

Growlybear83 · 20/12/2024 23:00

@WishinAndHopin No, I wouldn't expect to cook pork in my daughter's oven, which is why I said in my first post that I think it would be unreasonable for the OP's sister to cook her chicken in her oven. But I would expect to be able to take a bacon sandwich to my daughter's flat and eat it with them. I wouldn't object to anyone bringing their own food to my house if they felt that I couldn't meet their dietary requirements or preferences, but I would try my best to provide for them.

Tbry24 · 20/12/2024 23:01

Your meal sounds really lovely.

And no to bringing or cooking meat ever to a special meal in your own home, we are a vegetarian household and I would never agree. It’s bad enough we have to tolerate others trying to force us to eat stuff we don’t eat when we aren’t at home.

For our main we are having nut roast, roasted root vegetables, roasted potatoes, red cabbage, a selection of green veg, veggie gravy, stuffing balls and yorkshire puddings (I will probably not have those so I have a vegan meal instead).

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 20/12/2024 23:01

Every meal I've eaten this week was vegan; cooked by my husband from the Guardian Feast recipes on the Feast app and Saturday supplement. They were delicious. Probably about 3/4 of what we eat is vegan.

Of course its not. 1lb of lettuce will not fill you anywhere like as much as a more nutritionally dense food as it contains mostly water!!!

That's fair enough and also where I stand as a vegan. Cooking? No. Bugger off and contaminate your own kitchen. But feel free to bring your own prepared snacks.

It's one meal, or at most, one day. She can do without animal flesh for a day. Well, she can do without animal flesh forever, like OP and myself and the very many vegans thriving without it.

My home is my sanctuary - I do not allow meat or dairy here. People can respect that, or not come.

its a hallucinogen so is forbidden along with other mind altering substances like alcohol.

Well if its the vegans on this thread they reckon they should suck it up and respect the house rules!

WishinAndHopin · 20/12/2024 23:04

LinnettdeBelleforte · 20/12/2024 22:57

I merely mentioned that to show that I am not supporting the OP because I agree with her diet. I am supporting her because it is her house and her rules. I don't try to force my beliefs on others at all, but if someone tries to shame me for eating meat and dairy they will get short shrift.

You are shaming vegans by labelling us as "judgy" and unhealthy. You are a hypocrite.

Wonderi · 20/12/2024 23:05

WishinAndHopin · 20/12/2024 22:23

Would you be happy eating from an oven that has had a human carcass cooked in it?

Yeah probably.

Every single one of us has cut our selves on knifes or cheese graters etc before and so we’re eating off utensils that have had human blood and flesh on them.

But we wash them so it’s fine.

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 20/12/2024 23:05

AInightingale · 20/12/2024 23:00

Well, that's not much good to a vegan. What would you cook for them?

I wouldn't have any difficulty cooking for a vegan. I mentioned in another post we use the Guardian Feast app and weekend supplement, or something by Yotam Ottolenghi. About 3/4 of what we eat is vegan.

Growlybear83 · 20/12/2024 23:05

@Longtimelurkerfinallyposts re the nutmeg. This has been a long running saga since my daughter became a Muslim. My son in law is Jordanian and apparently Jordanians do not use nutmeg as it is considered to be haram, because it is an intoxicant if consumed in large enough quantities. Many Muslims I've discussed this with do not agree with this, but my daughter and son in law have discussed this with several imams. Who have all confirmed that the strict interpretation is thst it's not allowed. I've also researched online, and it does seem to be the case that it's considered haram.

No Carbs?? Veg are full of carbs. The op hasn’t listed out her ingredients but perhaps her peppers have rice in the stuffing ? Chickpeas - full of carbs and also fibre. Falafel would have carbs.

Ate you thinking of protein ?? Which can be found in the chickpeas for one.
