Dodgy dealings in the woods..

LostPups · 19/12/2024 22:16

I walk my dogs though a wood every day. I've walked there for a couple of years, but the last few months it's been daily rather than sporadically as my previous walking area has closed to the public. The wood is quiet and because noone really goes there, I can let my dogs off lead to run and chase pheasant and squirrels etc... and they r safe and other dog walkers and dogs aren't disturbed by them. I enjoy the walk and so do the dogs.

But in the last couple of months I've noticed men hanging around at one particular spot which is accessed from a nearby pathway adjacent to a train track. They seem to arrive by bicycle and they r always in the same spot, usually sitting or standing behind a tree (which made me jump the first few times!)

The men I see are usually always alone. They look very out of place as they are generally young (18 to 35), wear puffer jackets, nike trainers and have their phones out. Looks out of place in a muddy wood! Occasionally there'll be a more vulnerable looking man instead of or a little after/before the more trendy looking men.

Anyway, the first few times meeting or seeing these random lone men, it didn't bother me. I:d say hi, they'd say hello back, and I'd carry on my way.

But recently I've been feeling quite unnerved and if I'm honest, a little scared.

I am almost 100% sure the men in the woods have something to do with drugs. I don't know what is happening, who is dealing what, the ins and outs of what they r up to, and nor do I care. But I am starting to get paranoid someone might be finding me annoying and might try to bump me off!! Please tell me this won't happen!?!!

I really don't want to stop walking the pups in this wood, but equally I don't want to spook or piss off a drug dealer!

So .. am I'm being crazy to feel scared and paranoid I might get hurt because I have inadvertently found myself stumbling into the middle of a large drug operation!

Do you think the dealers or whoever they are, actually care im there?

Should I stop walking in the woods? (this will.b hard as nowhere local to let dogs off lead except the woods, and one of my dogs needs to run far and fast)?

Is it a known thing that drug deals happen in woods? Or could something else be going on?

Not far from this field there are also a couple of spots where people seem to regularly have fires, and also an area where there's lots of litter (cans, crisps packets etc..) and evidence of further dodgy stuff - clothes with shop tags still on sprawled.on the ground - stolen goods?

I'm so sad my country walk now feels like I'm intruding into the criminal world and that I shouldn't be on their turf :(

They are possibly members of the Hunt Saboteurs Association concerned about pheasants and squirrels being chased wantonly, that or drug dealing.

OuterSpaceCadet · 20/12/2024 06:44

Apologies if already mentioned, but easy way to know if it's cottaging is there will be human shit around the place. Seriously. (I live near woods popular for this).

I’m going for drugs. The bar for searching people on foot or bike is actually incredibly high. You don’t need any reason for searching someone in a car really.

What!? Tell that to a black lad in London.

Honestly, all the people suggesting drugs- where do you live? People deal drugs from their flats. Yeah, sometimes in the street - but that's like selling newspapers used to be - you need to be near footfall.

Drug dealers are not standing around waiting for a single person. It's sex... Blimey.

Theunamedcat · 20/12/2024 06:56

Near a trainline I would have said trainspotter tbh

Either way do you have any doggy friends you could organise a group with more people showing up they might move on

SpikyCoconut · 20/12/2024 07:01

Wonderi · 19/12/2024 22:59

They definitely won’t kill you!!

Drug dealers don’t make a habit of murdering random dog walkers, it’s not good for business :)

I would always be a bit weary of men in the woods but it wouldn’t worry me any more if they happen to be drug dealers (in fact it would worry me less because they’re there for a reason).

Maybe try going at a different time if it’s making you feel uncomfortable.

This (It's 'wary', 'weary' means 'tired').

Ignore them. Drug dealers hiding in woods are very unlikely to also be serial killers hanging about hoping a woman would suddenly appear. Let them go about their business. You'll be a lot more likely to become a target if you report them and they suspect it was you.

OneBadKitty · 20/12/2024 07:26

Puffer jackets and trendy clothes- sound like road men rather than gay men, so most likely dealers.

User346897543 · 20/12/2024 07:30

If they're on bikes it will be a drugs pick up

Damnloginpopup · 20/12/2024 07:32

LostPups · 19/12/2024 23:02

🤣thanks! I know I'm paranoid! But I keep imagining worst case scenario as I'm walking along on my own!

I don't think it's paranoid. I don't think they would attack you just for walking past, but if a deal goes wrong and it all kicks off, then you could find yourself in the wrong place at the wrong time eg if you witnessed it

Inthebleakmidwinter1 · 20/12/2024 07:39

I would see if you recruit a few friends or how about a whole village sponsored walk. 😂. They feel safe because it’s a quiet place

LostPups · 20/12/2024 07:53

DreamTheMoors · 19/12/2024 23:25

They aren’t gonna murder you.

If they are dealing drugs, they know the legal consequences for that.
They certainly aren’t going to add a murder charge to the already severe drug charges.
As far as the gay stuff, I don’t know nothin’ about that, Miss Daisy.
Drugs are much more likely.
They’re drug dealers — not murderers. Well, they just sell the stuff that kills people.

I’m sorry that your dog-walking route has become compromised. That’s a doggone, lowdown, dirty shame.

🤣👍 thanks

Forma druggie here...
They don't want your attention as much as you do, leave them be and they'll leave you alone.

Perfect. Thanks

They seem to arrive by bicycle and they r always in the same spot,

If they start flashing the bike lights, you'll know it's dogging for cyclists.

Could they be trainspotters hanging around waiting for trains??

🤣🤣 no! I don't think so!!

Is there a train yard/ train parking anywhere near that spot? You may have found some graffiti artists sneaking onto the lines to paint the trains or paint the walls alongside the tracks. The clothes fit the demographic. They'd need rucksacks for the spray paint.

Well this would.sound v plausible, except there is a big bridge near-by with a legal area for graffiti where graffiti is allowed and encouraged!.They are never near that and where they r there is just woods (and some fields near-by) and no walls!

Drug dealing or sexual encounters...

I would contact the local police and report it.

LostPups · 20/12/2024 08:02

Allthehorsesintheworld · 20/12/2024 01:01

though some, like pheasant man, do look a bit more nervous and a bit vulnerable - maybe a guilty look type vibe...)

That’s exactly why I’d report it. Vulnerable looking suggests possible exploitation.
If you get the What 3 Words location and report that on 101 I can’t see any way random men in a wood can know it’s you.

Thanks. I'll think.about reporting it. I'm just scared to do that (I really am pretty much the only dog walker out there. Noone goes there really!) but I'll consider reporting..

I can’t get past the bit where you let your dogs chase pheasants for entertainment…

There are threads for days about how dreadful trail hunting is in case the dogs accidentally chase a fox, but letting your dog chase and presumably kill pheasants is fine?

He doesn't catch live pheasants. He seeks out dead.ones which is a bit gross and therefore I do try and stop him doing that! He does chase after flying pheasant and other birds, but I don't think they know as he's running behind them as they r flying far away! He does chase squirrels up the tree. I am sorry I had assumed all dogs did this and the squirrels were basically sitting up the tree laughing at them because I don't think dogs ever catch a squirrel do they?

I will try and be more mindful

How near are the woods to a town by bike? It sounds a bit county lines to me.
It's not the best idea as a dealer to have a large quantity of drugs on you. What a lot do is hide a stash and keep going back and forward to it. That way if you're caught it's an amount that could be classed as personal use rather than selling.
I'd ask (anonymously) on my local FB as well. Soneone always seems to know.

I said the same up thread. Sounds like county lines/ CCE. It's well known dealers hid their stash in woods/ out of the way rather than be caught with it on them or in their houses.

Cottaging does not involve “romping”. It’s just dick in dick out. Standing up. Quick, anonymous, furtive.

If it is drugs it’s very unsophisticated. You’d expect to see the same dealers there. Dealers usually take orders online/message & deliver. Or set up somewhere warm, dry and easy to access. Why would they make anyone go to wood in the rain that’s not easy to access by car?

Squirrels are massive piss-takers. They are goading your dog. Furry little bell ends.

I know it's strange..I don't think it's cottaging. I'd.love.to.know what is happening.
