Dodgy dealings in the woods..

I walk my dogs though a wood every day. I've walked there for a couple of years, but the last few months it's been daily rather than sporadically as my previous walking area has closed to the public. The wood is quiet and because noone really goes there, I can let my dogs off lead to run and chase pheasant and squirrels etc... and they r safe and other dog walkers and dogs aren't disturbed by them. I enjoy the walk and so do the dogs.

But in the last couple of months I've noticed men hanging around at one particular spot which is accessed from a nearby pathway adjacent to a train track. They seem to arrive by bicycle and they r always in the same spot, usually sitting or standing behind a tree (which made me jump the first few times!)

The men I see are usually always alone. They look very out of place as they are generally young (18 to 35), wear puffer jackets, nike trainers and have their phones out. Looks out of place in a muddy wood! Occasionally there'll be a more vulnerable looking man instead of or a little after/before the more trendy looking men.

Anyway, the first few times meeting or seeing these random lone men, it didn't bother me. I:d say hi, they'd say hello back, and I'd carry on my way.

But recently I've been feeling quite unnerved and if I'm honest, a little scared.

I am almost 100% sure the men in the woods have something to do with drugs. I don't know what is happening, who is dealing what, the ins and outs of what they r up to, and nor do I care. But I am starting to get paranoid someone might be finding me annoying and might try to bump me off!! Please tell me this won't happen!?!!

I really don't want to stop walking the pups in this wood, but equally I don't want to spook or piss off a drug dealer!

So .. am I'm being crazy to feel scared and paranoid I might get hurt because I have inadvertently found myself stumbling into the middle of a large drug operation!

Do you think the dealers or whoever they are, actually care im there?

Should I stop walking in the woods? (this will.b hard as nowhere local to let dogs off lead except the woods, and one of my dogs needs to run far and fast)?

Is it a known thing that drug deals happen in woods? Or could something else be going on?

Not far from this field there are also a couple of spots where people seem to regularly have fires, and also an area where there's lots of litter (cans, crisps packets etc..) and evidence of further dodgy stuff - clothes with shop tags still on sprawled.on the ground - stolen goods?

I'm so sad my country walk now feels like I'm intruding into the criminal world and that I shouldn't be on their turf :(

They definitely won’t kill you!!

Drug dealers don’t make a habit of murdering random dog walkers, it’s not good for business :)

I would always be a bit weary of men in the woods but it wouldn’t worry me any more if they happen to be drug dealers (in fact it would worry me less because they’re there for a reason).

Maybe try going at a different time if it’s making you feel uncomfortable.

How do you know they wouldn't murder op ?? No one knows their even drug dealers they could be anyone even if they was drug dealers and op sees something they could be at risk

Better to avoid going their all together maybe

They will be (magic) mushroom picking … we get quite a few in the countryside round here.

That would be interesting but it tends to be one man standing in same spot! No mushrooms.around. Whichever man happens to be there, they normally stand behind a tree with their bike visible but he is not visible until you walk past and see him behind the tree.

Yeah, I think I will sadly.

Is it always someone different? You never see the same guy twice?

ShortyShorts · 19/12/2024 23:07

Post in your local Facebook group.

Guarantee you'll find out within minutes, or at least read other local's theories.

Doggymummar · 19/12/2024 23:07

I think you must live by me. I spoke to them the other day and said " your not doing much to alleviate the stereotype" and they say hello every time now.

I think it's very likely to be cottaging. No drugs, just men having sex with men. You won't have seen much because they are cautious about being seen. The pattern of one person hanging around for ages and then the other party rushing off is typical.

They won't do anything in front of you and are probably more wary of you reporting them.

They will be harmless. Ignore them.

I am 99% sure it's not a sex related thing. It just really doesn't have that vibe. I know.I.might be wrong, but it just feels like it's not that!

“”because noone really goes there, I can let my dogs off lead to run and chase pheasant and squirrels etc...””
why do you think it’s your right to let your dog do that.

Thingymajigii · 19/12/2024 23:09

What type of dogs do you own? Would they protect you if you were attacked?

Mirabai · 19/12/2024 23:12

I agree it’s cottaging. If it was dealing you’d see the same guys there regularly. Also dealings really changed now you can order online, I can’t see people being arsed to go the woods for drugs.

MyKidsAreTooNoisy · 19/12/2024 23:14

On the balance of probabilities, I’d say they are closeted gay, drug-dealing, fungophile, bicycle enthusiasts. Best stay well clear just in case it’s catching.

SnoopysHoose · 19/12/2024 23:14

Is there no Run Free filled near you? secure fields you rent by the hour for your dogs.

I have seen a few multiple times. I think my dog scared one off permanently! He was more nervous looking than the others had been, and he was one of the few I started to smile at and say hi to more regularly. Then one day my dog found a dead pheasant which STANK and he took it up to the man who basically was backimg away. I couldn't get the dog to drop the pheasant and the dog didn't seem to.want to leave the man either. It was really awkward then I didn't see him again!!

More recently it's been a younger man quite often, trendy.looking lad.

Mostly these men are Asian or white youngish men and they mostly all have a phone with them.and look 'trendy' (though some, like pheasant man, do look a bit more nervous and a bit vulnerable - maybe a guilty look type vibe...)

Its a big leap up the crime ladder from dealing in the woods to bumping off a member of the public. Most dealers would not risk a murder charge to avoid the off chance a woman may have witnessed...what? Them talking on their phones in the woods?

No but it's always the dog walkers that find the bodies. 😂

Whatever it is, it's going to be dodgy. I wouldn't walk there. Is there nowhere else in the woods you can go? like a section that's popular with dog walkers?

We have woods where I live now. I was so pleased to leave London and to be nearer to nature, but I had to do some investigating to make sure where I was going was okay. Sadly, I have not really been able to explore as much as I'd like. Interestingly, the locals have all said the same there's definitely spots where you ought not to go.

If it's dealing, I agree that people do it very openly now. But there's all kinds of reasons why they might not want to - and why their customers might not want to.

I used to walk past the local dealers in my London park, but it was full of every day people so it didn't worry me. This seems a bit different.

I don’t know why you think it’s not cottaging, it goes on on the common near me in London and this is pretty much what it looks like.
