I have never heard of this before but apparently my dental surgery has two different kinds of X-rays and that is an ordinary X-Ray and a superior X-Ray and they only do a superior x-ray if you go with tooth pain so the ordinary xray is false as it doesnt show up any dental issues

I was confused about these two different X-rays so I found up the practice and ask them to get the dentist to explain and he wouldn't explain and he just said I was mistaken and I think he said that because he thought I would complain because if you don't get the correct X-Ray and you have dental issues and they don't show up then it could lead to something really nasty and then you could put in a complaint about the dentist and he could be struck off

I had something significant show up on a CT scan at the dentists that wasn't visible on the routine xray. Needed an urgent root canal filling which fortunately saved the tooth. Scan was in relation to having an implant following an accident so unrelated. Maybe this is what he was referring to by superior xray.

Yes but if you have things going on with any of your teeth that need addressing and they don't show up in the normal x-ray how will you know about them and fix them before they get worse because my tooth pain was related to an infection which was caused by a cavity and if the cavity doesn't show up on the normal X-ray and then it leads to an infection that is not good because if the cavity had shown up on the normal X-ray it could have been dealt with before it led to an infection

And the only reason I knew that there was anything wrong with the tooth was because it started hurting so I went to the dentist to see why it was hurting and then all this came to light and the dentist said you have a cavity and my own dentist said to me you don't need to come back until your six months check up and all the time I've got this cavity I don't think that's right and it doesn't fill me with much confidence that I'm going to get the best treatment available because issues are being missed

So I think that dentists should give CT scans as a normal routine

I'm also not very happy that my dentist said to me the reason why people need a lot of feelings is because they eat sugar which is wrong because I know someone who eats tons of sugar but then flosses very thoroughly every night for at least 30 minutes and has not had a feeling for five years and it's not because this person has cut down on the amount of sugar they eat it's because they floss so it's not your sugar consumption it's the flossing that saves teeth

Flossing does nothing to stop cavities. And flossing for 30 mins is mental. And they had a filling five years ago, so they have fillings.

What I meant was they may have had feelings five years ago but they feel that they're taking proper care of their teeth because they have not had any treatment for 5 years whereas I have treatment every time I go so every time they go to the dentist every six months they get your clear and it's been like that for the past five years and they go to Cedar hygienist for a deep clean every three months

Surely proper flossing and brushing gets rid of bacteria because it's the build-up of bacteria that lingers and causes cavities

Anyway I don't have any contact with this person anymore because I've decided that their ideas are a bit bonkers

As I said I don't have any contact with this person anymore because they are bonkers. And they also told me that their teeth are very straight because that's just the way their teeth are so I said did you ever wear a braces a child and they said no I didn't need to so they think themselves as Little Miss perfect I don't I can say it's bully for them

Some people have naturally straight teeth - who knew?

That's enough sherry for one day, OP.

I'm not a dentist but I had dental anxiety and a bad experience that made me mistrustful of dentists.
The reality is for most people if your oral hygiene is good, diet sensible, you have no symptoms.. a routine ordinary xray is adequate. I don't think England does routine CT scan, nhs or private without a medical reason. Talk to your dentist tell her or him why you feel you need a more thorough xray. Sometimes the body flares up and our immunity sorts things out with itself so you can disturb things that would have likely remained without any progress or made minute progress for many many years. You must also remember that invasive dental work has side effects and could cause other new problems for example I regret replacing my perfectly fine but old looking crown because now my bite feels off yet 4 different dentists tell me it's fine. I wish I hadn't pre-empted problems and listened to my conservative dentist, instead I went with another who was chomping at the bits. Bottom line, if your teeth don't hurt leave well alone! And stop googling!

WhatMe123 · 19/12/2024 12:37

Op a ct scan and machine costs a lot of money, they cannot be used for routine dental X-rays 😬

DecayingRelic · 19/12/2024 12:41

too much radiation

Lollygaggle · 19/12/2024 12:47

In the U.K. a dentist has an absolute legal obligation to keep x Ray exposure to an absolute minimum .
CT scans are useless for most dental problems , they require additional training to interpret and are only used for certain, very specialist , investigations like seeing where exactly a nerve is below a wisdom tooth etc.

Dental x rays are far better/more useful for most dental clinical uses .

A dental Bitewing , which is the commonest dental x Ray has the equivalent of one days background radiation.
A ct scan has the equivalent of one years background radiation.

So from a clinical , diagnostic and safety point of view dental x rays have far more use than a ct scan .
