I have never heard of this before but apparently my dental surgery has two different kinds of X-rays and that is an ordinary X-Ray and a superior X-Ray and they only do a superior x-ray if you go with tooth pain so the ordinary xray is false as it doesnt show up any dental issues

Here are some full stops for you, OP.

I'm not a dentist but I had dental anxiety and a bad experience that made me mistrustful of dentists.
The reality is for most people if your oral hygiene is good, diet sensible, you have no symptoms.. a routine ordinary xray is adequate. I don't think England does routine CT scan, nhs or private without a medical reason. Talk to your dentist tell her or him why you feel you need a more thorough xray. Sometimes the body flares up and our immunity sorts things out with itself so you can disturb things that would have likely remained without any progress or made minute progress for many many years. You must also remember that invasive dental work has side effects and could cause other new problems for example I regret replacing my perfectly fine but old looking crown because now my bite feels off yet 4 different dentists tell me it's fine. I wish I hadn't pre-empted problems and listened to my conservative dentist, instead I went with another who was chomping at the bits. Bottom line, if your teeth don't hurt leave well alone! And stop googling!

In that case can you tell me why when I had a pain in a tooth a different dentists did an X-ray and when she looked at it she said it's a shadow here I don't like to look off and I will refer you to the Maxi facial department of the hospital so they can have a look and treat it and so I said my dentist hasn't ever told me about this shadow and her reply to me was that's because he didn't take the appropriate x-ray the x-ray he took would never have shown this shadow and it's only visible because of the type of x-ray I've done on your tooth

PerkyOchrePeer · 19/12/2024 12:56

I would love to know how her x-ray differs from my own dentist x-ray for her to see the Shadow and he not

Anyway she referred to me to the hospital and they wrote back saying we have seen the X-Ray and we don't think it's worth bothering about

You know, you’re supposed to feed the brandy to the Christmas cake, not neck it yourself.

WhatMe123 · 19/12/2024 13:00

Op all you need to know is that there we two types of dental x Ray a normal one and a more sensitive one for the root. You don't need a ct scan a normal dental X-ray is sufficient for most problems

WhatMe123 · 19/12/2024 13:00

Sounds like your tooth is all ok then try to relax

Rosecoffeecup · 19/12/2024 13:02

Has a village lost its idiot?

PerkyOchrePeer · 19/12/2024 13:04

Actually the dentist who did the hospital referral is newly qualified and she actually told me that she felt obliged to refer me because otherwise she wouldn't be doing her job properly and I suppose she felt that she might get into trouble for missing something whereas a more experienced dentist was years and years of experience would be able to tell by looking whether it was an issue or not

Dentist here!
what @Lollygaggle said is correct,
the rest of the thread is well ……..!!!

PerkyOchrePeer · 19/12/2024 07:54

So I think that dentists should give CT scans as a normal routine

Dr. You clearly have no comprehension of the level of radiation that involves... which comes with a risk of cancer. You really don't want to be having annual ct heads for the curiosity that there may be a developing cavity

fgsistwbotp · 19/12/2024 13:36

I think you've misunderstood a lot of what you have been told.
I'd also like to give you some full stops ......... and fillings fillings fillings fillings fillings (not feelings)

And now you're saying it needs a root canal.

sanityisamyth · 19/12/2024 15:03

@PerkyOchrePeer so have a root canal? It's better than having a tooth removed and a gap/denture/implant???

Bignanna · 19/12/2024 15:11

PerkyOchrePeer · 19/12/2024 08:57

What I meant was they may have had feelings five years ago but they feel that they're taking proper care of their teeth because they have not had any treatment for 5 years whereas I have treatment every time I go so every time they go to the dentist every six months they get your clear and it's been like that for the past five years and they go to Cedar hygienist for a deep clean every three months

Fillings!

Surely proper flossing and brushing gets rid of bacteria because it's the build-up of bacteria that lingers and causes cavities

The bacteria are feeding on the sugar. They produce acid which eats into your teeth. So reducing sugar means fewer bacteria, less acid. Removing bacteria will also mean less acid.

Anyway I don't have any contact with this person anymore because I've decided that their ideas are a bit bonkers Thank goodness for that!

ItReallyDoesntMatterAnymore · 19/12/2024 16:33

Are you referring to an OPG as opposed to an actual CT scan OP? My dentist would normally use a regular X-ray which you can have in dentist chair. The OPG is a stand up one where you nedd to bite down on a piece of plastic. It gives more detail than the standard x-ray. CT scan would not likely happen at an actual dental practice but in a hospital or scan centre.

I've recently had all 3 of the above done in preparation for surgery to remove wisdom tooth. The CT scan took a long time to organise and only referred to it by oral consultant as they needed to check how close tooth is to nerve in order to plan surgery.

Many surgeries do have ct scanners.

An opg does not give more detail , it shows a wider area so for eg wisdom teeth it will show where they are in relationship to the nerves of the jaw. However an OPG is not as good as a bitewing or periapical x Ray for detecting decay or abcesses .
