AIBU not to get a double buggy?

hopecro · 18/12/2024 18:30

I have a toddler who will be exactly 2 when I have this baby in March 2025 and I am trying to avoid getting a double buggy.
My daughter walks well but will still ask us to carry her.
I am planning to use sling at the beginning for the baby and buggy for my 2 year old for some time and then baby in the buggy with 2 yr old on the buggy board. If we do any longer walks my DH is with us so when I'm alone with kids it will mostly be going to shops with car, playgrounds or toddler groups which I will drive to so planning to use either buggy or a sling for a baby and toddler to walk.

AIBU not to get a double buggy in this case?
We don't have a big car and I can't be bothered with it.
Or you think I will definitely need it?

Get a cheap buggy board and if it winds you up you can buy one later. Spaced mine out purposely so I don't have to get one cause I hate the idea too

Hankunamatata · 18/12/2024 18:34

Everyone's different. I wouldn't have been without my double as my 2 yr old loved a power snooze and he was massive so couldn't carry him.

PlumEagle · 18/12/2024 18:35

I think you'll be fine. I got a double buggy for my 2 with the same age gap and found it useful but I have friends who didn't bother and were absolutely fine. I mainly got one as my toddler was a bit of a bolter and it's able to just stay in the car boot!

Christmaseason · 18/12/2024 18:35

I have a 21 month age gap and bought one second hand and sold it for the same amount a year ago or so later. It was handy, I also had a bolter.
When my DH and I both went out we found it worked well to have one DC each in a buggy.

buttonousmaximous · 18/12/2024 18:35

My dd was 2.3 wen second dd was born we got a double buggy but barely used it as she wanted to walk everywhere

Midlifecareerchange · 18/12/2024 18:38

It does depend on lifestyle but I didn't have one I was mostly without a car in a city with good public transport. I used a buggy board/ sling/ single buggy combo

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 18/12/2024 18:38

We used ours loads tbh. I definitely would get one again

Pickingmyselfup · 18/12/2024 18:40

Mine were 2 years and 2 months apart and we managed fine with just one pushchair. I used the sling for the baby and then a buggy board for the toddler.

See how you get on without one first and then if you think you absolutely need one then maybe see if you can get a cheap one. I don't think it's worth spending a fortune since it will only be used for a year or so unless you walk absolutely everywhere because you can't drive but it seems like you have a car.

I’ve had a 17m gap and a 22m gap. Both times I got a double (baby jogger)

Reasons were: both times the elder child was a good walker but not necessarily at the speed or in the direction I wanted to go. It was useful to get the naps in sync by taking them both for a lunchtime walk.

I tried the sling/single combo once. Perhaps I did it wrong but I had baby in the buggy, toddler walking. Toddler kicked off and I struggled to keep them safe whilst getting the baby out of the buggy and into the sling and then getting the angry toddler into the buggy.

Also, whilst I did have the baby in the sling often I did like the option of having nobody touching me for five minutes especially if I got a double nap!

Scunnered123 · 18/12/2024 18:47

We didn't get a double buggy for that age difference and managed fine. We travel a lot on public transport so single buggy and sling is far easier. When baby eventually moved into buggy toddler used balance bike to keep up. It worked really well for us.

eastcoasterly · 18/12/2024 18:47

Our eldest was just turned 2 when his sibling was born. We had a double buggy but only used it a handful of times. Most of the time we put the sling in the shopping basket of the single pram, and then if toddler needed a rest/nap we would pop baby in the sling and push toddler in the pram. Worked very well and easier than lugging our double buggy everywhere. Congratulations on your pregnancy, it's a lovely age gap. My pair are decorating our living room together as I type. They have their disagreeable moments but overall they get on so well.

Lilyhatesjaz · 18/12/2024 18:51

I started off with a buggy board but my DS aged 2 had a real problem balancing on it so I ended up with a double buggy. We used to walk long distances on busy roads so him walking everywhere wasn't practical.
My DD was much better at balancing on the buggy board so later I used to put my older heavier child in the pushchair and her on the back.

ChallahPlaiter · 18/12/2024 18:51

I had an exactly two year age gap and got a side by side double buggy (but I also had a 4 year old). It was handy and I developed biceps of steel. They’re unwieldy things though and it was slightly terrifying taking it on the bus.

Mandylovescandy · 18/12/2024 18:51

I had a double running buggy so could use it for long walks and runs (it was massive so no use in town, on buses etc but great for countryside long walks) and also great for joint naps in buggy but otherwise had buggy board added to the single pram for everyday use. Didn't use a sling but if you use that lots and just doing the trips you describe doesn't sound like you need one

OhHellolittleone · 18/12/2024 18:55

2y2m age gap. I had a uppababy Cruz and now also have a vista, annoyingly. I bought the buggy board for the Cruz and my daughter didn’t like it, so had to get a proper double. We have a narrow hallway so a side by side isn’t possible. I use it every day!

Eenameenadeeka · 18/12/2024 19:09

I think it's safe to wait and see how you go, and only buy one if you feel like you need it. I didn't need a double for my first 2 children as my 2nd was in the sling a lot and the eldest liked to walk . Now we have 4 children and there is 2 years between the youngest 2 and I definitely need it with them because the 2 year old was a runner and the baby absolutely hated being in the sling, and obviously out and about every day with the older 2 at school and things. But in your situation I'd use the sling and pram and see how you get on, and get the double if you feel like you really need it.

Sinkintotheswamp · 18/12/2024 19:10

It depends how much you walk and are rushing around really. If you need to get to toddler group then nip to the supermarket I'd get a double.
I kept a double until mine were 4 and 2 as I walk everywhere and walk fast. I has the bonus of extra storage space and somewhere to dump coats.
my eldest has just learnt to drive and I still miss that double buggy, especially at Xmas shopping time.

XmasElfOnTheShelff · 18/12/2024 19:10

2y2m between mine. Eldest walked well. Decided buggy board / sling. Managed it for 12 weeks before I got a double.

Oldnproud · 18/12/2024 19:12

I had almost exactly two years (+ 2 days) between my two, and managed fine without a double buggy. Dc1 managed all the walking OK.

I didn't drive then, so there was quite a lot of walking, but we were able to take our time, which must have helped

But a lot will depend on how often, how far, and how quickly you will have to go places on foot, and some toddlers do find walking harder than others.

In your position, I might try a buggy board first, and see how it goes. Can they be used when there is no child in the buggy? If so, perhaps try it before you need the buggy for the new baby, encouraging your toddler to use it for short periods of time as a 'game' before it becomes essential.

DC2 also had to walk everywhere from age 2, but that was because. a wheel came off the pushchair and it couldn't be repaired!

Quercus3 · 18/12/2024 20:33

I had a Hyundai i10 (very small) and our double icklebubba buggy fit in the boot perfectly, if you do change your mind.

I've found it really useful, but I had an enormous baby and struggled with the sling post birth on long walks 😂

Bearbookagainandagain · 18/12/2024 20:39

We got one but the age gap was smaller and we walk everywhere. We got one that can be used as single or double, so when we don't need the second seat we can put it away.
Our eldest only started to use the buggy board consistently as he got closer to 3, but we probably won't have bought the double with a 2 year age gap.

Anonimouse12345 · 18/12/2024 20:43

I had a 14m gap and a good walker.

I got rid of the double when she was 2 (she was refusing to go in) and got a buggy board and a single.

Ive managed without but life with the pram was so much easier! I would get a second hand out n about if you can find one.

Midlifecareerchange · 18/12/2024 18:38

It does depend on lifestyle but I didn't have one I was mostly without a car in a city with good public transport. I used a buggy board/ sling/ single buggy combo

Same! Mine are also exactly 2y apart and stuck with a single plus buggy board. I hate the pram so little one only ever went in the sling anyway - think first time in a pram was just shy of first birthday.

I only wished I had a double on two or three occasions when they were just turned one and three, and both needed to nap at the same time - though eldest was pretty late to drop the nap! I don’t drive, so that resulted in some v long and heavy walks home with the toddler conked out in pram and “baby” being carried.

Not enough to make me want to wrangle a massive double pram about though. Number three due, again with an almost 2y gap, and will be doing pram/buggy board/sling.

likeafishneedsabike · 18/12/2024 20:45

lots of variables. In my case with a 2 year gap, DS loved the buggy board and was never a moaner/bolter when walking. So fine without double.
That said, we had a spare buggy so that when DH was around we could have a pushchair each! That worked well.

RedHelenB · 18/12/2024 20:47

Get a cheap double buggy There will be times they're bith tired and pushing is easier than carrying.
