To quit my job rather than do this?

Hey all,

Looking for some unbiased advice. Every year my work hold a big event for a small charity the week before Christmas. It raises a lot of money and really makes a huge a difference to the charity. We literally raise more money for the charity in one hour than the charities get in a year. The charity changes every year.

This year I was asked to organise which charity we would partner with, which I duly did. I chose a lovely charity who were really excited. I then went on annual leave leaving both work and the charity with all details confirmed, travel organised etc. I’ve kept in touch with the charity on my time off and they’ve shared some really heart warming and heart wrenching stories that they would like to share. Everything seemed well.

Cue tonight. I’ve been asked by work to stand my charity down with one days notice because work has found a charity that they think will do better on socials.

AIBU to refuse to stand my charity down because 1) it’s wrong and 2) I’m on leave?

I’ve point blank messaged to say I won’t do it but honestly they might force me to. Also, if I don’t stand my charity down and they turn up I will be in big trouble.

I am going to fight this and genuinely would rather quit than do it.

Before anyone suggests it, it’s not possible to have both charities.

WWYD in this situation?

I won!

We went ahead as planned with my charity and plan to do something a bit different with the other charity in the New Year.

Fantastic!!!

I'd bet that your charity is so grateful for the fundraising and wouldn't have had this boost to their coffers had your company withdrawn.

There is actually no reason whatsoever that you couldn't do something like have a pre and post Christmas charity drive going forwards so that you're able to help more than just one charity.

Well done you!!!

AtmosAtmos · 20/12/2024 11:19

Well done- hope they get a large sum. Actually also that the company gets good publicity supporting a small charity so they might consider it in future.

EmotionalSupportCuttlefish · 20/12/2024 17:27

This is such good news. Well done OP for standing up for the charity!

MarkWithaC · 20/12/2024 17:35

Well done, OP. A win-win!

cansu · 20/12/2024 17:39

Point out that the PR repercussions of dropping the charity at this stage would be significant. Be clear that you will not be able to be involved in dropping the charity.

LlynTegid · 20/12/2024 17:42

Good on you OP for standing your ground. Sad that anyone else thought of dropping a charity for appearances.

Thank god. And very sensible - there will still be opportunities with the other charity.

Crikeyalmighty · 22/12/2024 18:07

Nothing like 'performatitive'charity pairing being used as a PR exercise - rather than the true spirit of Christmas - I would take a very dim view of your employer if that's what they are doing

chaosmaker · 22/12/2024 18:38

Congratulations @WelshRambler for getting them to stick to their word. :)

You need to come off the WhatsApp group chat as on your days off you are still working. Just remove yourself

Justus6 · 26/12/2024 12:47

This is awful! I'd be reminding work that the point is to help a charity not bump up their socials!

Personally I would want to quit after that too I couldn't work for someone that was more concerned with social media image than the right thing. It's such bad form!

Wishbid of read the whole way go you! Well done on standing your ground x

Makingchocolatecake · 26/12/2024 23:02

If your company are doing it for the social media attention I'm not sure they should be donating imo. Morally so wrong!

SoNiceToComeHomeTo · 26/12/2024 23:05

Say it's much too late to change and they are being ridiculous. Then say it again if necessary. They can't much people around like this.

Why would you respond without at least reading all of OP’s posts? This is all done with 🫤

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 27/12/2024 09:19

Don't quit
If they fire you over this (not working on annual leave) you'd have a good case against them I'd say.
