To quit my job rather than do this?

Hey all,

Looking for some unbiased advice. Every year my work hold a big event for a small charity the week before Christmas. It raises a lot of money and really makes a huge a difference to the charity. We literally raise more money for the charity in one hour than the charities get in a year. The charity changes every year.

This year I was asked to organise which charity we would partner with, which I duly did. I chose a lovely charity who were really excited. I then went on annual leave leaving both work and the charity with all details confirmed, travel organised etc. I’ve kept in touch with the charity on my time off and they’ve shared some really heart warming and heart wrenching stories that they would like to share. Everything seemed well.

Cue tonight. I’ve been asked by work to stand my charity down with one days notice because work has found a charity that they think will do better on socials.

AIBU to refuse to stand my charity down because 1) it’s wrong and 2) I’m on leave?

I’ve point blank messaged to say I won’t do it but honestly they might force me to. Also, if I don’t stand my charity down and they turn up I will be in big trouble.

I am going to fight this and genuinely would rather quit than do it.

Before anyone suggests it, it’s not possible to have both charities.

WWYD in this situation?

What was the outcome, OP?

RavenhairedRachel · 19/12/2024 19:58

The company I worked for had a community fund which we used for local causes . If we had organised something for a local charity no way on earth would we have gone back on our word.Stand your ground and say your charity are so excited about it and would be devastated. Also they would go to the local paper and social media to slag off your company if they were let down at the last minute.

Deeperthantheocean · 19/12/2024 21:21

That's appalling! Tell them far too late to change, it would cost the company more money to do so, put them in a bad light, bad SM comeback etc as the immorality of it will fall on deaf ears. Xx

I won!

We went ahead as planned with my charity and plan to do something a bit different with the other charity in the New Year.

That's just disgraceful and shameful

Agapornis · 19/12/2024 21:31

Well done!

Balloonhearts · 19/12/2024 21:31

Point out that the socials are not going to fare well if they let the chosen charity down at the last minute for no good reason.

Chonk · 19/12/2024 21:52

Well done OP!

elfies · 19/12/2024 21:59

You Won ... thats great .
Respect !!!

MadnessIsMyMiddleName · 19/12/2024 22:01

That's BRILLIANT news, OP! I'm SO pleased that you won out in the end, and it's good to know that you didn't have to sacrifice your own job and wellbeing in order to get them to do the right thing. You should be proud of yourself, unlike the people you work for. In your shoes, I'd be thinking very carefully whether I actually wanted to continue working for a company like this, as they clearly have no morals, but at least this way you can go when it suits, and don't need to leave as a matter of principal, although it's good to know you have some!

Mygreyhair · 19/12/2024 22:02

Bloody hell @WelshRambler, well done!
Can you say how much money was raised?

Good. How awful though that the company you work for seemed to expect you to drop the charity in the sh*t after all the work you'd done with that particular charity. Shows a real lack of integrity and not at all "charitable". A pity you cant name the unscrupulous company.

Oblomov24 · 19/12/2024 22:51

Good. Disgusting behaviour by your boss.

Agree with this really. It’s great that they went ahead with the charity you chose and worked with but the fact they wanted to ditch them at the last minute would leave a real sour taste for me. You found something out about your employers unfortunately.

Hyperquiet · 19/12/2024 23:27
