To ask how to use the underground?

I used to get an underground ticket with my train ticket as an all in one travel card but can't seem to get one now. Have they stopped doing them?

What's the simplest way for me to get a ticket? It's a one off and I don't like using apps so just need to know what to do on the day. Also potentially travelling in the early hours of the morning when ticket offices closed.

Thanks

You can just tap your phone/bank card at the gates like you do when paying contactless in the shops.

username299 · 17/12/2024 22:02

You can use your debit card.

Mummadeze · 17/12/2024 22:02

You can use a debit card on the underground to tap in and out.

BlondeFool · 17/12/2024 22:02

You can use your contactless debit card on the tube

pumpkinpotpie · 17/12/2024 22:02

Just use your contactless card or on your phone. Simple and easy!

MoveOnTheCards · 17/12/2024 22:03

Just tap your bank card on the reader on your way in and out of the tube barriers. It’s as cheap as getting a ticket and there’s a daily cap so if you do 8 tube journeys you still only pay a max of around £9 (depending on zones).

Shinyandnew1 · 17/12/2024 22:03

Just tap in and out at the barrier at the tube station with your debit card like you would with your old train ticket -no apps needed.

HoppityBun · 17/12/2024 22:03

I’m not sure exactly what you’re worried about, but if you have time and are near a ticket office you can buy your ticket in advance and they’re very helpful or buy online

tarmactreacle · 17/12/2024 22:04

Oh cool! It really is that simple? Just tap my card at the barrier each time I go through it?

Just make sure you tap out as well as in and you'll be grand!

Travel cards are more expensive, unless you get a day return to London with a travelcard added on - sometimes there are some amazing deals that way, worth checking.

as long as its contacless.

Branster · 17/12/2024 22:06

You can still buy a travelcard as a physical ticket when you get your train ticket to cover your train journey plus underground.
I know exactly what you mean OP, I'm sick of all these stupid apps and having to wave my phone or card to pay for stuff.
One ticket in your pocket to get you from A to B and back is nice and safe.

teatimefortiger · 17/12/2024 22:06

It really is as easy as that. Just remember to tap out as well as in so you only get charged for the journeys you make.

Perplexed20 · 17/12/2024 22:07

I went on Sunday. You can still buy a travel card (here at least) but for me it's cheaper to just buy a return and then I used my debit card. The ammount charged is capped at the same price a travel card would be but if you don't use that much you pay less. You just tap your bank card on the reader on the way in and out. Just remember to use the same card!

Createausername1970 · 17/12/2024 22:07

Yes, OP. What everyone else says. I was used to getting it included with my train ticket so I was a bit thrown when I first realised I couldn't do it anymore.

But honestly, it's simple. Just tap your card on the card reader at the tube station barrier. Just like on a bus or any shop.

PragmaticIsh · 17/12/2024 22:08

You said early hours of the morning OP, the underground is mostly closed between midnight and 5am.

LauderSyme · 17/12/2024 22:10

Yes they have stopped offering train tickets which include a travelcard. Apparently it was felt this meant that Londoners were subsidising non-Londoners, so it was withdrawn.

Last time I had to go to London I realised I had forgotten my oyster card and felt sick with worry (yes, I do catastrophise!) and I was so happy and relieved when I realised I could just tap in and out with my debit card.

Ah, that explains why I can't seem to get one with my train ticket. Thanks for that. It does make sense

They haven’t stopped doing train tickets with travelcards - or at least they hadn’t yesterday, when I got one!

I don’t know if they’re available from all stations, though. But it’s pretty easy to either use a card or Apple / Google Pay

Is it?!!! Trying to get from the O2 to Waterloo and possibly on to Paddington if I miss the last train home from Waterloo. Are these lines likely to be open do you think?

Sadiq Khan's decision apparently! Ah well, it was good while it lasted...

@IKEAJesus maybe it depends on the method of purchase or the train company?

OP in my experience tube lines run til about 1am and I thought I heard they've been extended even later. Have you tried tfl's journey planner online? It's very good.
