To tell sick son he can’t come over?

My 20 year old son is in university about half an hour away from my house, he has his own apartment there, he moved out at the start of the summer. He’s been doing a placement near us and has just messaged to say he’s getting a taxi over to mine as it’s closest because he’s started throwing up uncontrollably..

Its a week before Christmas, I’ve still got loads to do, we’re a house of 6 people including two small children and to be frank I don’t want a stomach bug coming in at this point. Would I be the worst mum in the world to tell him to go home instead???

Also extremely unpleasant for the taxi driver if he's "throwing up uncontrollably" 🤨

Yes, poor taxi driver.
plus the other passengers in the virus infected taxi.
@PipeworksCopper I’m shocked that a 20 yr old would be this selfish.
( Yes I also have an adult son)
He should keep germs away.

You could always leave rehydration salts on his doorstep.

MrsSkylerWhite · 17/12/2024 13:32

Difficult one.

Can you go to his place, keep your distance but make sure he has everything he needs?

He needs to be at home with a bucket 🪣.
He won’t be able to eat anything anyway..

Thevelvelletes · 17/12/2024 14:08

He should tough it out at his own flat sure he'll be fine in a few days.

oakleaffy · 17/12/2024 14:13

@PipeworksCopper Norovirus comes on hard and fast.

I was leaving to go to Badminton horse trials and began to feel really gurgly in the stomach-
Thought nothing of it- but 10 mins later was vomiting.
Thank GOODNESS it came on before I left.

I was sick constantly for a good 24 hrs. Lost count and the dry heaving was so painful.

Well lets hope the taxi driver doesn’t catch it and ruin his Christmas too

What else was he supposed to do? I guess that’s just a risk you have to take as a taxi driver. Lots in our area wear face masks and I regularly see them cleaning out their cars at the rank.

HeddaGarbled · 17/12/2024 14:29

I’d go and get him. He wants looking after.

Shinyandnew1 · 17/12/2024 14:31

I don’t think this was the best of ideas but I wouldn’t have said no to any of my kids either.

I wouldn’t have him in the lounge in the sofa though, that’s asking for trouble! Quick get him in a bedroom with the door shut asap! Try to limit the spread of germs.

Thevelvelletes · 17/12/2024 14:31

And this is why mummy's boys stay mummy's boys even with a partner of their own because of always having a woman to run after their arse.

Nc546888 · 17/12/2024 14:32

Awww my mum would always come and get me in any situation.

If it were my family the youngest would be dropped with a neighbour for a little while and I would go and get DS and keep distance and then find somewhere for him to isolate at home and then nurse him and support

I once did a whole week in my shitty bedsit sick as a dog with flu when I was 19 and in college. Nobody to get me anything and very little in the house. Granted, I was a 2 hour drive from 'home' but it wouldn't have occurred to me that anyone would have come to rescue me. I was an adult and just got on with the hellishness of it all.

If you were my daughter and knew I'd be straight up with supplies

NotYourSaviour · 17/12/2024 14:49

I wish you luck OP! Shut him in the bedroom, he stays between that room and the bathroom. Bleach any surfaces he's touched, everyone in the house washes hands before eating (little kids just wash frequently). Blitz the bathroom after he's recovered, but he can still be contagious for up to 2 weeks which is a massive ball ache. With really good hygiene it can be avoided. 🤞

My 19 year old goddaughter got a horrible chest infection in her first term at university and was coughing her lungs up whilst missing home. We live quite close so we brought her back here for a day to cheer her up. But I must admit that if she'd been vomiting she'd be on her own!

Thanks, he’s in youngests bedroom now with his bucket, lots of water, dioralyte and some paracetamol. I’ve been frantically dettol spraying and bleaching everything he’s been in contact with before the kids finish school 🙈

Throwing up uncontrollably sounds pretty serious. I'd be worried about him if it was my child. Your youngest could easily pick up a bug from school or even the shops, there are loads of bugs going round. Obviously more likely that they will get it from someone in the house but to turn away your sick older child to reduce the chance the rest of the house will get unwell just seems really mean and OTT to me.

How does he get to his home throwing up on the train and spreading it to everyone?

Well done, I'm sure he'll start feeling better now he's safe at home - it'll be over as quick as it started hopefully, and your zone control will avoid it spreading. Keeping everything crossed for you all.

Does she say he has a partner? Isn't the issue that he is working locally but lives a train ride away? Not everything is down to gender

Thevelvelletes · 17/12/2024 17:22

I meant any future partner.

Where would you like him to go? And how would you have him get there? 🙄He's not selfish at all. If he were near his home, he would have gone there. As he was near his mum's home and couldn't risk taking the train and walking as he couldn't control his vomiting he went to the closest place he could get to.

I’ve just checked on him again and he’s sleeping so hopefully the worst is over now x I’ve managed to keep the younger ones separated and have sanitised everything repeatedly, fingers crossed it doesn’t spread to anyone else in the house.

I wouldn’t realistically have been able to turn him away whilst ill I was just having a bit of a panic at the logistics of managing the well being of everyone else at the same time, but no I couldn’t have sat here in good conscience knowing he was that sick trying to get home on the train and suffering by himself in his flat. He doesn’t live with anyone else so wouldn’t have anyone to support him if he were at his place.

Thanks to all for your input x

Awwww, well done op. Not nice for anyone, I hope your hygiene measures do the trick.
Fingers crossed for you and for a lovely everyone-well Xmas.

Hope he’s feeling a bit better by the morning. Well done for looking after him-20 is nothing, I’d have done the same.

niadainud · 17/12/2024 22:33

Hope he's going to look after everyone he passes it on to!

Ohwtfnow · 17/12/2024 22:51

Bleach everything he’s touched or been near. Dettol/disinfectant does absolutely nothing to kill norovirus so is useless, but bleach kills it.

Just plain nasty. I’m sure lots of 20 year old women would want to go back to the family home in the same situation.
