Kids clothes not going past age 14

My DD has a Christmas party Thursday with her drama group. Money is a tad tight so I looked on Asda, Tesco etc for a party dress. Barely any have clothes for children over age 14. She's 10 but very tall and women's clothes just aren't suitable. I don't understand why they have done this? AIBU to complain?

I suppose because 14 year olds are quite often the size of adults so it wouldn't make a lot of sense to have kids clothes bigger than that

CrushingOnRubies · 16/12/2024 19:43

New look has a pre teen teen range

Of course you can complain, but I suspect they don’t go any higher as they won’t sell many. When I was 14 I was in adult clothes and wouldn’t have been seen dead in the kids section! I guess if your 10 year old is the size of a 15 year old that’s difficult though. I’m sure some places must sell kids clothes in bigger sizes but probably not the cheaper end.

HPandthelastwish · 16/12/2024 19:44

Because after age 14 they are the same size as the smaller women's sizes. Next have clothes that go up older online and a 15 is a womens size 6 or 8 I think

Bearsinmotion · 16/12/2024 19:44

I hear you. DD is 12, been wearing women's clothes for 2 years as she is the same height as me and "kids" clothes just don't fit her. She lives in jeans and hoodies though so appropriate clothes aren't an issues but the cost 😱

That are a different shape though.
YANBU OP.
I've got no good suggestions - we're just out of the other side of this.

JimHalpertsWife · 16/12/2024 19:44

Places like Primark often have size 4/6 in their women's section, presumably for exactly this sort of scenario.

leia24 · 16/12/2024 19:44

My 14 year old is taller than me and wears a size 6/8 and has for a couple of years..she also doesn't want to dress like a 10 year old so there'd be no purpose for age 14 kids clothes. I do think that maybe new look and next and river island do up to age 14.
Try shops that stock a size 4/XXS.

StormingNorman · 16/12/2024 19:45

I didn’t want to wear kids clothes at 14. Goodbye M and S, hello Tammy Girl!

lakesiders · 16/12/2024 19:45

Do age 14 not fit? How tall is she? H and m do a 14+ which is probably 14-15 but it's always been like that for sizes. New look do a teen range too

Foreigners88 · 16/12/2024 19:46

Many kids even younger than 14 can wear size 8, 10 etc

MoreDangerousThanAWomanScorned · 16/12/2024 19:46

I think making kid's clothes in adult sizes is probably skirting (pun unintended) a bit close to the line of evading VAT.

Puddleclucks · 16/12/2024 19:47

You can complain if you like, but I doubt any of the stores mentioned well change their minds.
Try a Primark if money is tight, they do tiny sizes.
Most 14 year olds wouldn't want kids style clothing, there's no commercial reason for the shops to sell it.

Birdscratch · 16/12/2024 19:48

H&M?

Surely it’s for the women who are size 4/6 🤣 although in practice that size in primark would usually fit a size 8 woman!

hellofroggo · 16/12/2024 19:50

Definitely H&M as a small (but definitely not tiny) woman I can still wear the size 14+ clothes! Most would look terrible but they fit

sparkellie · 16/12/2024 19:51

It's crap. My son is 16, average height but skinny as anything and trying to get trousers that fit is a nightmare, it was bad enough with kids stuff, but at least they were more likely to be available with an adjustable waist. There's nothing in the men's section he can wear, even joggers dont pull tight enough.
My daughter is 12 and taller than me, so lots of xs women's clothes, which is fine for trousers/tshirts/hoodies, but finding nice dresses is really hard, as most just aren't suitable for pre-teens in my opinion. I have found next do some things on line, and their sizes don't come up too small.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 16/12/2024 19:52

If she's over five foot three aged ten, she's well over the 99.6th centile.

You're better off buying small sizes of adult's clothes than looking for children's in the cheaper ranges (not criticism, M&S will have stuff in the kids' ranges, but they'll be expensive).

2025willbemytime · 16/12/2024 19:54

Was ever thus. BHS used to be the best as it did children's clothes up to 17.

I have a black net/lace dress. Would that be any good? DD only wore it once. May be too old though as I've realised your DD is ten.

BobbyBiscuits · 16/12/2024 19:54

When I was 14 I was my adult height. And an adult size 12/14. Girls tend to stop growing upwards around that age and simply change proportions to loosely meet adult women's sizing. Plus most 14 year olds wouldn't want to wear children's clothing. Surely when you're that age you're wishing to seem grown up and fashionable. If someone is bigger than their age in kids sizes then that's not really a problem. It doesn't mean you should make kids clothes for people the same size as adults.

Auburngal · 16/12/2024 19:54

Nothing has changed as it was the same thing for me. I wore 3 years older than my age (aged 8 - wore aged 11 clothes).

Clothes shops should stop selling children’s clothes by age. My friend has to buy blazers for her DS who is 14, 6ft 6 and 16 stone from a tailor. As the school uniform supplier - biggest one filled her DS two years ago! He plays rugby for his county.

C&A as a child did up to 170cm

menopausalmare · 16/12/2024 19:55

We had this problem recently. Trying to buy a party dress for an 11 year old the size of a 14 year old that isn't too revealing, frumpy, itchy or sequinned. She bought a plain black clingy dress from Primark then says it's itchy. 🙄

Apart from there is no VAT on kids' clothes so it absolutely would make sense.

MigGril · 16/12/2024 19:57

I actually think it has nothing to do with older children not wanting to wear children's cloths, as often ranges do teen sections which they like. But more to do with VAT on clothing, if children's cloths where large enough for some adults to wear then they may do as they would be cheaper. I hate the fact that I have to pay full adult price for teenagers cloths, the whole point in there being no VAT on children's cloths is to make it cheaper to cloth your children.

DD often shops in New look as they go upto size 15 and she still fits in some of it.

But there's probably some sort of rules about the sizing they're allowed to do in childrens clothes for that exact reason
