Kids clothes not going past age 14

My DD has a Christmas party Thursday with her drama group. Money is a tad tight so I looked on Asda, Tesco etc for a party dress. Barely any have clothes for children over age 14. She's 10 but very tall and women's clothes just aren't suitable. I don't understand why they have done this? AIBU to complain?

Every saying that a 14 year old doesn't want to wear kids clothes isn't reading the OP. Her daughter is 10 but needs bigger aged clothes due to her size and adult clothing is unsuitable.

theeyeofdoe · 16/12/2024 19:57

H&M, Next, Primark, River Island. They just don't have them in shops.I suspect as most 12 year olds have to diverse in height and boob size to waer children's clothes.

Forgot to mention that my DD wasn't and we bought from there, but I was fully grown at 12 as were both her best friends.

I think making kid's clothes in adult sizes is probably skirting (pun unintended) a bit close to the line of evading VAT.

I know VAT starts on shoes size 5.5+.

I was a 5.5 shoe aged 10. Now a size 8

Jealous of friends who have size 4 feet and can get trainers cheap

Lindy2 · 16/12/2024 19:59

It was quite a relief my my 2 DDs started fitting adult size clothes. I think it was around age 12 and size 10 - 12 fitted just fine.

They had so many more styles to choose from in the adult range. The teenage girl stuff was all so samey.

Why isn't a woman's dress or outfit suitable? Surely there's something your DD will like.

ItOnlyTakesTwoMinutes · 16/12/2024 19:59

I’m 35 and still buy kids clothes. Surely she can fit into age 14?

Bushmillsbabe · 16/12/2024 20:01

I'm with you, my 9 year old is in 11-12 clothes for her height, and size 5 trainers.
It's hard to find age appropriate clothes, it's all cropped tops, cropped jumpers etc, which definitely are not ok for a just turned 9 year old. In a couple years we are going to struggle, and her shoes are costing me a fortune!

Stressfordays · 16/12/2024 20:02

Unfortunately, you're going to have to look in the adult section. Plenty of sequined shift dresses around suitable for a party. Not too revealing or adult. Age 14 clothes are the same size as adults, I'm currently wearing my son's age 14-15 coat as mines ripped and I'm a size 10.

Moier · 16/12/2024 20:02

Loads of stores have teen clothes.
New look
Next
Primark.
Tk max.

Maybe you're not reading the OP because she wanted to know why kids clothes stop at that size and if she should complain

pandapopadance · 16/12/2024 20:06

Im a size 8/10 adult and can fit in M&S age 14 and H&M and New look kids clothes. Im sure M&S go up to age 16 online.
Look at XXS in primark. Mango do a size 4 and river island kids go up to age 15 I think.

Goldenbear · 16/12/2024 20:06

I have a nearly 14 year old who can easily fit into children's clothes still but would never ever go near children's clothes anymore so I personally think they don't make them as they know the average 14 year old has no interest in them.

What about John Lewis I thought they went up to 14.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 16/12/2024 20:09

The 13/14 year old girl's clothes in M&S are about an adult size 12 - I don't think there would be much demand for anything bigger than that in a children's range. I notice John Lewis seem to have very little for older girls though.

millymae · 16/12/2024 20:09

Try M&S - they do clothes for up to age 16. One of my nieces is a tall 13 year old and whilst New Look etc is more her go to now there is still the odd thing in M & S that she would wear.
What I’m trying to say here is that M & S’s range for young teens is probably more suited to the OP’s 10 year old than someone older

Meadowfinch · 16/12/2024 20:10

I feel your pain OP. I have a 16yo 6' ds with a 25" waist and a 33" inside leg. Men sizes simply don't fit. Thank god for Next skinny fit trousers for 17yos.

Or I'd be paying a tailor and I really can't afford that.

Goldenbear · 16/12/2024 20:11

I think 14 year old clothes in places like John Lewis and Marks tend to be quite big in comparison to shops my DD goes to like Brandy Melville, clearly aimed at teens and under 18, saying that many of the bottom half things are too big for her. I've put them against her older children's clothes from H and M or Marks etc. And they are bigger so you should be able to get something.

snoopyfanaccountant · 16/12/2024 20:12

My DD has the opposite problem. At 21 she is very short and slight so still fits age 11-12 clothes.

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 16/12/2024 20:13

sparkellie · 16/12/2024 19:51

It's crap. My son is 16, average height but skinny as anything and trying to get trousers that fit is a nightmare, it was bad enough with kids stuff, but at least they were more likely to be available with an adjustable waist. There's nothing in the men's section he can wear, even joggers dont pull tight enough.
My daughter is 12 and taller than me, so lots of xs women's clothes, which is fine for trousers/tshirts/hoodies, but finding nice dresses is really hard, as most just aren't suitable for pre-teens in my opinion. I have found next do some things on line, and their sizes don't come up too small.

My not very tall skinny 16 year old gets jeans and trousers from Hollister. They do them by waist sizes and leg length and so I buy him a 28 or 29” waist - with a belt they’re ok.

sorry to hijack OP. Abercrombie & Fitch do up to age 16. They often have good offers on.

KirstenBlest · 16/12/2024 20:13

Primark goes up to age 15. I wear boys' joggers from there.
I'd try H&M, Zaram TK Max and New Look.
I forgot Next but I haven't been there for years because they moved to a retail park.

verabarbleen · 16/12/2024 20:15

I worked in NEXT a few years ago and most of there kids stuff went up to age 16 but not in store you had to order it. Maybe check the website?

InfoSecInTheCity · 16/12/2024 20:15

My 10yo Dd is tall too (and size 7 shoes) new look, Next and M&S tend to be fairly generously sized and length is good too. Sometimes Tu range in sainsburys though their trousers seem to be very skinny legged.

Differentstarts · 16/12/2024 20:16

Complain to who? Lots of clothes shops do teen wear

DelurkingAJ · 16/12/2024 20:16

I hear you. DS1 is just 12, 5’8’’ with a 26’ waist. My sigh of relief that he can now wear men’s XS could be heard from space. Last year he was 5’5’’ with a 23’ waist and had a selection of ladies size 4 joggers for Y6 so that they were just long enough and didn’t fall down. Not the right shape but…Deep joy!

HaddyAbrams · 16/12/2024 20:17

Clothes can be a real issue if your child is much bigger or smaller than average for their age. DS2 was always tiny so we often had to shop in the toddler/younger boy sections. Only he was too old for The Gruffalo/whatever they were selling at the time.

DelurkingAJ · 16/12/2024 20:17

Going up a size to get length is fricking useless if it all literally falls off at the waist!
