To get irrationally irritated at deliveries - I know IBU!

Slightly lighthearted but wondered about the psychological reason behind this!!

I realise IBU but does anyone else just feel irrationally irritated having to answer the door to a delivery, even if it’s something you’ve ordered and waiting for!!

Not sure if I was like this pre baby but since having DC it’s even worse, I suppose because I either have to put DC down somewhere to answer the door, carry them with me (heavy!) or they’re in the middle of a nap so I’m trying to relax or get jobs done. The food shop is the worst, obviously very grateful we can afford to have nice food delivered but OMG knowing the shop is turning up soon and thinking about having to put it all away! I dread it!

Delivery drivers are always so rushed too, so particularly RM and DPD etc., I feel I have to leg it to the door and drop everything I’m doing (often busy with DC!) to make sure they don’t either take it away or throw it over the garden gate, or similar!

Worst time of year obviously as awaiting deliveries of Christmas gifts, I just hate the actual deliveries!!

I mean, it's very much a first world problem, isn't it? 😂

What would you like to happen instead?

VodkaCola · 16/12/2024 09:06

Stop ordering stuff?

goldencabbage · 16/12/2024 09:07

You need a designated safe space. My postie just leaves it there and I pick it up when I'm not in a zoom call

BendingSpoons · 16/12/2024 09:07

I get where you are coming from. I used to hover as I didn't want the doorbell to wake the baby. However it is so much easier than going in person! I have memories of doing the weekly supermarket shop with my mum and she still had to put it all away! I don't mind too much now, now you can track most deliveries and know when they are coming.

JaneandtheLaundry · 16/12/2024 09:07

No I get excited that my stuff is here.

RosieLeaf · 16/12/2024 09:07

Don’t order deliveries then.

Catza · 16/12/2024 09:08

I keep my conservatory door unlocked for this exact reason. I made friendly with my local DPD driver and she lets herself in, has a smooch with the dog and leaves the parcels. Not everyone's cup of tea, I know but it works better for me. Other companies just leave parcels by the door and don't even bother to knock.

HelterSkelter224 · 16/12/2024 09:11

Yes and no - I once did a massive order of baby stuff (about 10 items) from the same retailer, and it showed up in 8 deliveries over 2 days. I was going mad by the end of it!! A can would show up with one babygro, then an hour later another van with a single dummy etc. It was during working days as well so my husband was cracking up too lol and the dog was going absolutely bonkers with all the vans. Absolute chaos!

Feliznavidog · 16/12/2024 09:12

I very much realise this is a first world problem and IBVU! I’d be far more annoyed if stuff didn’t turn up! I suppose it’s just being disturbed by things. Doesn’t help my DH orders all sorts of random stuff so half the time it isn’t even mine.

It annoys me when they lean on the doorbell, hammer on the door and then leave the parcel in the porch before I’ve got to the door anyway. If you’re going to do that, just ring the bell once and fuck off.

Yes maybe it’s more the strategy of the drivers than the deliveries themselves! So often they hammer the door (even though we have a doorbell) and just leave it outside anyway!

Yes I do! I know it's ridiculous because it's stuff I've ordered!
I also know delivery drivers have a difficult job for crappy money so this is very much lighthearted but...

The worst is when they knock and I'm in a work call or in the middle of something so I think ah they'll just leave it on the step. Then they knock again so I leave what I'm doing and go to the door to find the parcel on the step and the driver getting back in the van!!!!

Our postman also has the loudest knock ever and I've told him a few times to just leave stuff on the step if I don't answer.

When I WFH my office is in the loft so 2 flights of stairs to run down 😂

That I can answer. Half of people's bloody doorbells don't work so waiting time ringing then having to knock

Seeing as parcel couriers only get about 40-50p a parcel delivered they are not going to have time for that

So why not leave a note saying " in meeting leave on doorstep" get a laminated one that you can reuse

tilypu · 16/12/2024 09:50

I'm very much more irritated at not getting deliveries. Take that for example - 8.32 I get an email saying my parcel will be delivered between 8.30 and 10.30. Just now I've received another email apologising that they haven't been able to deliver today.

Imo that's much more irritating than actually getting the item you've ordered.

GasPanic · 16/12/2024 09:53

Why not arrange to have your parcels dropped at click and collect and get them there when you go shopping ?

That’s not a genuine reason when the doorbell does work and can be heard outside the house, though. Unless you’re saying it’s just too much faff to do it once and allow information to filter from your ears to your brain to your finger. Which makes you annoying when you appear on my doorstep.

Mmhmmn · 16/12/2024 10:02

It’s the over-reliance on deliveries to the door that really annoys me. So much extra traffic on the roads and car/van pollution, packaging … It’s unreasonable. I think we’ve become extremely lazy and feeble to the great cost of the planet and the state of the roads. And now it even seems too much to answer your own door to the stuff you’ve ordered?! Wow. it makes me think of how the less we do, the less we can do.

mondaytosunday · 16/12/2024 10:03

Um not sure how you can get irritated by this. You ordered it and it has to be delivered. What IS annoying is them ringing the bell then leaving it on the doorstep. Either wait for me to answer or put it in the designated safe space (which is not behind the bins Amazon!). Do not ring the bell have me rush downstairs to noone. Or rush downstairs to nothing at all.
But you are being unreasonable to not want to answer the door at all for something you asked (and doubly unreasonable if you booked a time slot too).

Extra traffic? Surely it's better to have one van on the road with parcels for, say, fifty houses using the most efficient route possible, than fifty people in cars popping out to get these items themselves?

Swissrollover · 16/12/2024 10:08

A safe space/ parcel box and a ring doorbell could help you. Very few drivers even ring the bell, just leave the parcel for me to collect at my leisure. I get a notification on my phone of motion, so ringing the bell is unnecessary.

This doesn't help with the groceries though. Hopefully you use a supermarket that gives more accurate updates than just a 1 hour slot. Tesco and Ocado apps are good for this.

I get that but all 50 people wouldn’t pop out to get their random item/s. A lot would wait until their next regular trip and combine with other shopping.

IDontHateRainbows · 16/12/2024 10:17

Get a delivery box - you can get them affixed to your outer wall. It's like a giant post box. problem solved .

The "ring and drop" sucks, but they do it because they're given unrealistic schedules (google amazon driver piss bottles for more info). The hammer on the door is to make sure you know it's there and pick it up. In my experience, more expensive delivery companies don't behave like this (e.g. the more expensive DPD service). At the end of the day, we all expect cheap delivery (e.g. amazon prime) and you get what you pay for.

I guess you've never done this sort of job - have a bit of empathy. If this is an issue worthy of posting a thread about for you, you don't know how lucky you are. Give your head a wobble, as they say.

Oreyt · 16/12/2024 10:32

I hear you op. Everytime I hear a car I think it's for me.

I wish we could be given a time slot.

The op knows she's being daft but I understand as I feel the same 😂😂
