To get irrationally irritated at deliveries - I know IBU!

Slightly lighthearted but wondered about the psychological reason behind this!!

I realise IBU but does anyone else just feel irrationally irritated having to answer the door to a delivery, even if it’s something you’ve ordered and waiting for!!

Not sure if I was like this pre baby but since having DC it’s even worse, I suppose because I either have to put DC down somewhere to answer the door, carry them with me (heavy!) or they’re in the middle of a nap so I’m trying to relax or get jobs done. The food shop is the worst, obviously very grateful we can afford to have nice food delivered but OMG knowing the shop is turning up soon and thinking about having to put it all away! I dread it!

Delivery drivers are always so rushed too, so particularly RM and DPD etc., I feel I have to leg it to the door and drop everything I’m doing (often busy with DC!) to make sure they don’t either take it away or throw it over the garden gate, or similar!

Worst time of year obviously as awaiting deliveries of Christmas gifts, I just hate the actual deliveries!!

Yes me 😂 not just delivers but randomers knocking on the door. As you say totally irrational when it’s something I’ve ordered. But I have a dog that goes bonkers when someone knocks. Plus there will be a baby next year. I’m thinking about changing my front door anyway (it’s knackered) and getting an external post box. I can’t have the dog going mad when the baby is here.

Isatis · 16/12/2024 10:36

Just go for deliveries to a collection point or, in the case of supermarkets, opt for click and collect. That way timing is totally within your control.

The dog's on you - should have trained it.

I love deliveries.

Your issue could largely be avoided by shopping in person.

Tell me you’ve never had dogs without telling me you’ve never had dogs 😂 she’s a working line German Shepherd doing exactly what she’s bred to do. You try “training” them to not guard the house 🤣

Nah, it is possible to have a German Shepherd that doesn't go loony every time someone knocks. Are you in a semi, terraced or detached?

BashfulClam · 16/12/2024 13:28

Our Amazon guy sounds like he is trying to kick the door off its hinges. He will
also try and force every parcel through the letterbox! The Evri guy knows to just leave it at the back door.

you can ask them to leave it in a safe area such as the back door etc .

Also, if you think they bark at the door a lot, why did you get one then moan when deliverypeople (delivering things that you ordered) turn up. Both things are in your control but you're moaning about the result.

Why are you determined to keep giving @Hellskitchen24 such a hard time? I didn't see her moan about her dog at all. She commiserated with OP, expressed her own reasons for disliking deliveries and random knockers, and how she intends to deal with it.

You'll be horrified to learn that I have 3 dogs (out of 4) that bark/ go nuts when the door goes. They are all rescues who we adopted as older puppies/ young adults after their socialisation windows, and two were lockdown puppies. They are mixes of either terrier or dachshund, so can be quite stubborn.

The only one that doesn't bark has taken on his spaniel tendencies and is easier to train. His biological younger brother however takes on more of the terrier side. He very sadly spent his first 18 months locked in a cage in a flat, so is still terrified of many things including unfamiliar people coming to the door.

As I said earlier, we have ring doorbells/ cameras and parcel boxes to try to minimise the reaction to doorbells. I also track most of my deliveries using the apps, so try to keep the dogs distracted when a delivery is imminent. (And in case you ask, in my detached, rural home, they aren't bothering any neighbours.)

That’s not a genuine reason when the doorbell does work and can be heard outside the house, though. Unless you’re saying it’s just too much faff to do it once and allow information to filter from your ears to your brain to your finger. Which makes you annoying when you appear on my doorstep.

Not all doorbells can be heard outside the house though. My mums never could. It had a chime in her kitchen which was at the back of the house.

So u expect the drivers to ring once then hang about to see if you answer and if not then knock?

It's all just so horribly "me me me!". This whole thread. You're right, I prob should be less of an arse to @Hellskitchen24 but she just stuck out as an obvious example. She describes a situation in which there is a bit of mild unreasonableness on her side (having a dog that threatens the postman and potentially disturbs the neighbours) and frames the problem as being her own irritation that the people bringing things that she ordered trigger a response from the dog that she got.
The OP says they know that they are unreasonable. I'd argue that if you know that you are unreasonable, then deal with it, but OP posted this thread to get responses from people
Also, people who work for the delivery companies are pretty badly exploited. This thread moaning about them feels a bit horrible.
On the dogs thing, you sound like you're managing your reactive dogs admirably. @Hellskitchen24 is only going to get a postbox because of her needs.

No, I’m very happy for them to ring once and leave the parcel. It’s the burst of ringing and knocking without giving me time to get to the door that’s infuriating.

How are you going to make sure the dog doesn't go mad? I'd have sorted it before the baby tbh

RaisinFlapjack · 19/12/2024 16:41

In the spirit of the thread, the thing that infuriates me is that if I think “no worries, they’ll leave it on the doorstep if I don’t answer”, then they end up taking it back to the depot. And if I excuse myself from my zoom call to rush to the door then they’ve left it on the doorstep.

More seriously, it is an enormously privileged position to be able to order stuff to my door to suit my whims, facilitated by poorly paid warehouse workers and delivery drivers with poor employment rights.

It’s a small gesture but I always leave a box of chocolate bars out for delivery drivers to help themselves to at this time of year.

JillMW · 19/12/2024 16:45

I don’t mind if it is mine but if a neighbour has asked it to be left at mine without asking that makes me a little irritated. One lady I have asked not to but she still does it and then comes at 11pm hammering on the door whilst ringing the bell and simultaneously the house phone “ just in case you didn’t hear me”. Twice this week I have refused deliveries for her, one of the drivers was annoyed with me because it said to leave at my house.

Snugs10 · 20/12/2024 09:43

Feliznavidog · 16/12/2024 09:16

Yes maybe it’s more the strategy of the drivers than the deliveries themselves! So often they hammer the door (even though we have a doorbell) and just leave it outside anyway!

Our delivery drivers tap the glass so quiet unless you are in the hallway you can't hear them. When challenged why they don't use knocker or bell they said don't touch them since covid.

Not all items can be delivered to pick up addresses / points.

eightIsNewNine · 20/12/2024 09:57

I hate semi-timed home deliveries.
Big grocery shop timed within 1 hour window is the only one ok for me.

I can use delivery to a nearby shop and pick it up later, and I do that a few times a year, but the best strategy is not ordering random "things"
