Does anyone buy DVDs any more?? And if so where from? We have hundreds but never use them. I’m wondering where we could sell or donate them to?!

World of Books/Music Magpie? Or charity shop.

AllTangledUpInTinselAndTiaras · 15/12/2024 14:47

Charity shops. I don't think you're going to get any money trying to sell them unless you've got box sets in really good condition.

Octavia64 · 15/12/2024 14:47

Charity shops mostly don't take them anymore as they don't sell.

BookishBabe · 15/12/2024 14:48

I get them from music magpie. I do still buy them if I want to watch something and it's not on a streaming service. They're usually only a pound or two to buy. You'll get about 1p each from them if you sell them though.

GrumpyCactus · 15/12/2024 14:49

None of the charity shops here take them. Cex will take some but often only obscure ones. To be honest I'd just put them on FB marketplace for free and see if someone's willing to pick them up.

KrisAkabusi · 15/12/2024 14:50

I put hundreds in the skip last summer as nobody wanted any. Most people don't even have anything to play one on any more.

Precipice · 15/12/2024 14:53

I buy them online sometimes, but it's when I'm after a specific DVD rather than browsing. I do see them still in charity shops near me and in fairness I'm rarely there, but they tend to be stuff that doesn't interest me.

RM2013 · 15/12/2024 14:53

DH used to collect them and had hundreds. Most things can be streamed online so he got rid of a load - kept some he still wanted. A load went on music magpie and I sold some
as a job lot on FB marketplace

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 15/12/2024 14:54

Yes, I buy them. From Amazon mostly.

Am a big fan of physical media.

Both DS and I love TBBT (for example) which is leaving Netflix soon. It would leave a gap if we couldn’t watch it.

PuppyMonkey · 15/12/2024 14:57

My DD is really into DVDs, she’s 17. For Christmas, she wanted one of those small integrated TV and DVD players. She likes displaying the movies she loves, she think a they’re really cool.Smile

AllTangledUpInTinselAndTiaras · 15/12/2024 14:58

We buy some too. But only from eBay. Or sometimes new from Amazon.

StrawberryWater · 15/12/2024 15:00

My sister has hundreds. I only buy them if they're boxsets.

You can offload them at CEX but you'll only get pennies for them. You might get a bit luckier on Facebook Marketplace (though you can also give them away for free on there) otherwise try charity shops (Cancer research is the best for taking them I find).

VarneytheVamp · 15/12/2024 15:01

I still buy them because I’m into cult/ world cinema stuff that’s hard to find on streaming and because streaming sites cut a lot of stuff these days.

You can sell to places like CEX and MusicMagpie but unless they’re particularly rare titles you won’t get much for them.

Dita73 · 15/12/2024 15:10

I had hundreds of them. Offered them to the charity shop and they didn’t want them. They ended up in a skip

Skyrainlight · 15/12/2024 15:31

Yes, I've bought some recently, I bought them from Music Magpie so I'd try selling to them if I was you.

Vaxtable · 15/12/2024 15:35

Yes I still buy dvds, from Amazon!

there are loads of places online who might take them

Auburngal · 15/12/2024 15:41

I still watch DVDs as 1. If the internet is down, which was the case for 2 days here earlier this year, you can still watch stuff. 2. Streaming services can pull shows and films without warning. 3. Some stuff on streaming services are edited.

Tagyoureit · 15/12/2024 16:27

Nursing homes, afterschool clubs etc may take some off your hands. You could ask in your local FB group and someone will probably take them

KimberleyClark · 15/12/2024 16:41

I have a few. They can be useful when staying at a holiday cottage without wifi.

1987qwerty · 15/12/2024 16:46

Was in a charity shop yesterday where they were 10p each. Most were decent films s well.

TheyCantBurnUsAll · 15/12/2024 17:09

Cex but they

SerendipityJane · 15/12/2024 17:11

There's been a little bit of a resurgence in physical media as people discover all the content they "bought" from whatever streaming platform is now being retired.

I wouldn't get rid of anything I really might want to see/hear again.

HumanRightsAreHumanRights · 15/12/2024 19:33

I buy stuff I really like on DVD so that when they decide to cut scenes or rewrite things to fit todays DEI directives I still have the original.

Means I don't have to pay to rent it or sign up to a specific streaming service if I want to watch it but it's moved from one to the other since I saved it in my watchlist.

Same with books as I'm tired of dumbed down books or DEI'd books ruined to fit todays sensitivities instead of people just accepting that different opinions/beliefs were held in the past but it doesn't mean you have to agree with them just because you read them.

Also comes in handy if the internet goes down or there is a power cut (have a couple of portable DVD players that are always fully charged), if we go away somewhere that doesn't have internet but need something to watch in the evenings, for travelling longer distances and so on.

TappyGilmore · 15/12/2024 19:41

I do occasionally, I am into more unusual stuff that isn’t available on streaming services.

I have had some success selling as a bulk lot on FB. I wouldn’t try to sell individually because I think it would be too time-consuming and they wouldn’t all sell. But package them up in lots of a similar genre and sell for $10 for 10 DVDs sort of thing. Not a huge amount of money but better than nothing if the alternative is just binning them.

H930 · 15/12/2024 19:48

Thank you all! Interesting to hear different opinions. We’re not bothered about making money from them but as PP have said, many charity shops won’t take DVDs as people don’t tend to buy them any more. We certainly won’t throw them away. Will look into some of your suggestions!
