To ask about DVDs…

Does anyone buy DVDs any more?? And if so where from? We have hundreds but never use them. I’m wondering where we could sell or donate them to?!

I gave some away during Covid as not everything is on streaming. And then I gave loads to friends of my parents who have a caravan with one of those combined TV/DVD players and don't have any other media when they're there

SugarCookieMonster · 15/12/2024 19:57

If you have any that you think you might want to watch in the future, I recommend getting an old school CD wallet. Remove all the boxes and keep the physical discs. Frees up all the storage space, you can still keep and watch your favourites and the boxes can be recycled.

I did this a few years ago and it’s great for dipping in to. We have lots of BBC stuff, some that you can’t find anymore (Flint Street Nativity etc).

ThisAmusedCrab · 15/12/2024 23:18

Yeah, I buy them because I’m tired of subscribing to multiple streaming services and it’s much more expensive. I’m also tired of the account sharing and movies/shows being removed from streaming services. I don’t like sitting through the adverts, why should I pay extra for the privilege not to watch adverts?

SerenityNowInsanityLater · 15/12/2024 23:25

I do! In fact, I've gotten back into buying them for my favourite films that I will watch again and again (not for one-offs). But my lifelong favourites are all on DVD and I have a small player. It's great because my older children are real film buffs now and they'll want to watch an obscure film and I'll have it to hand... and the quality is superb. Sometimes when you stream a film, the quality can be 'less than'. Never have that problem with a DVD.

I get mine off eBay but you have to really make sure, with foreign language films, that it's V.O. with English subtitles. I once bought Goodbye Lenin, a German film (I speak the language but my children don't speak enough to understand a German film) with Spanish only subtitles.

But yes, I have a DVD and CD library of sorts.
Next stop: Nokia Brick purchase. 😆
No but really, I am considering it.

Londoneye20 · 15/12/2024 23:27

Charity shops don't want them, we can't give them away, even when you hide them under a few t shirts. 😉

janfebmar87 · 15/12/2024 23:32

If you have 28 days later then it's worth selling. Everything else charity shop

DarkAether · 16/12/2024 00:08

@H930 bulk lots on ebay for selling

You must have read same article I did yesterday that said '28 days later' was worth £300. I suspect they may come back into fashion eventually like vinyl records🤔

Samcro · 16/12/2024 07:46

i still buy some as dd has lds and likes the physical thing. got her 6 from musicmagpie for £9.

Wow I’m pretty sure we do have it!

UndeniablyGenX · 16/12/2024 07:47

CEX will buy them, usually only for a minimal amount but if you have a lot, it might be worth it.

Think £300 might be a myth:

Wow I’m pretty sure we do have it!

You can buy it for a couple of pounds. It's not worth £300.

Lonelycrab · 16/12/2024 07:53

Yes still buy them all the time, normally from CEX or charity shops for between £1-£3. Ds (12) and I normally do movie night on Friday night, he loves films so as he’s getting older new films become ok to watch, some 15s are now ok for us to watch together. Collection is about 150 dvd’s now.

janfebmar87 · 16/12/2024 08:09

Sorry I have to agree. I know I mentioned it but I don't think it's worth £300 either. A streaming service could simply start showing it tomorrow.

Fun thought though

Charity shops did stop taking but have now started again where I live. As mentioned, there's a resurgence in DVDs, as the streaming services are charging more, dumping classics or charging too much for them. We kept our BBC boxed sets / classic films and have started watching them again, as impossible to find online and will be actively looking for titles, at charity shops, to add to the collection. Also deals with the issues of annoying adverts!!!!

Sooner or later I hope people will wise up to the idea that relying on streaming is handing over control of your viewing to a stranger. While 28 Days Later on DVD might not be worth a fortune, the 'rights issue' taking it off streaming is an example of this; also people being 'cancelled' - I prefer to make up my own mind what to watch.

Auburngal · 16/12/2024 08:28

Had this before - a TV series from 1990s went from one streaming platform to another one which I don't subscribe to.

Saw the boxset for £3 in a charity shop, which is the half the cost of one month's sub. Before anyone asks - I forget to cancel the subscription after a month on these free trials.

SerendipityJane · 16/12/2024 09:23

Also, owning the DVD insulates you from any "improvements" that the studio/director/platform might feel "necessary" in future.

Seeing "The Godfather" with it's modern culturally adjusted theme of Don Vito fighting for trans rights in Brooklyn ruined it for me.

BeachHutsAndDeckchairs · 16/12/2024 09:28

Yes I ordered some, and a small dvd player, from Amazon recently because I'm fed up of films I like no longer being available to watch on streaming services. I like that I can buy it once and then rewatch over and over without any subscription fees.

Well agreed, it’s super expensive and then the annoying adverts. I don’t have that much time to watch as it is, I don’t want to watch adverts at all.

HPandthelastwish · 16/12/2024 11:59

We stick them in plastic boxes on the drive with 'Free' on them and they always go, either carbooters or gardeners to make bird scarers

ThisAmusedCrab · 16/12/2024 12:00

Forgot to mention I have a multi region blu ray player, so I can watch anything across the world. As some DVDs/blu rays can be region locked, which is annoying. I have reputable Sony brand one.

summerlovingvibes · 16/12/2024 12:01

Yes I buy them as have a DVD player. Normally from eBay.
