Mick Jagger: just shouts tunelessly. He can’t sing at all.

Generally a lot of men in bands, like the Gallagher brothers, Alex Turner, and the singers in the Kinks.

Chris Martin - he’s just an insipid whiner. There was an advert with a woman with a good voice singing while driving a big lorry. I thought “that’s a nice song” and realised that it was actually Yellow by Coldplay. I never even realised it was a decent song because he just sounds so horrendous.

Generally women are held to a much higher vocal standard, and are only ever considered respectable artists if they are also good singers. Men who can’t sing get away with it. But ti balance it here are two women:

Geri Halliwell: Posh gets shit on for her bad singing but at least she had a pleasant enough tone. Geri is far worse - flat as a pancake.

Taylor Swift: such a weak voice. Sounds like mediocre karaoke.

Yes totally agree, but prefer his voice to John and I love his melodic Beatles tracks and his more rocky ones as well

Yeah, there's more to being a star than just the voice. You have performance, but also songwriting ability. Someone up thread said Taylor Swift, but she is a superb performer and song writer.

Some artists just have presence.

I admire a beautiful voice, but an interesting voice can also be appealing without being technically brilliant.

Katherine Jenkins, though she has a perfectly nice voice for classical crossover, is really not that strong as a classical singer. She has neither the technique nor the strength and stamina.

I'm surprised you rate her highly if you really were trained for 15 years as an opera singer Maybe you simply mean compared with the likes of Geri Halliwell, which definitely is a fair point!

I love how there are enough singers for everyone ‘s taste and being a good singer technically/being a good singer because you happen to have a good sound are different things but can make someone equally successful!

Cursive singing makes my skin crawl, to me it’s the most annoying type of singing in the world! And although I am not a fan of belters like Adele, Whitney, Mariah etc I respect them as artists-they’re just not my taste.

Taylor Swift has s lovely voice when she sings in her lower registers which she does more in her latest albums, but I agree with what others have said; she’s not a super talented vocalist, it’s the songwriting skill, discipline and general attitude that makes her popular and successful.

I am an (amateur) singer and some people think I have a good voice, but to me it’s ‘just my voice’ so I don’t hear it in the same way. 🤷🏽‍♀️

People in this thread are massively exaggerating what's possible in terms of making bad singers sound better in the studio. Auto-Tune can fix notes that are flat or sharp, but it can't make a weak singer sound strong.

Bob Dylan came up singing in folk clubs, protest marches, union rallies and so on where there was typically no amplification. So he developed a singing style that's mainly about being heard at the back of the room. (Personally I quite like his singing but don't like many of his songs.)

A terrible singer who's not yet been mentioned: Van Morrison.

I was so disappointed when she represented the UK at Eurovision. I don't know if she just wasn't well on the night, or if she's lost it as she's grown older.

Back in the 80s, she was incomparable. Yes, her voice was always raspy; she was never going to be mistaken for Karen Carpenter - but she was amazing.

The majority of posts on this thread are just personal preference rather than actually highlighting bad singers 🫠

There are a quite a few boy and girl band members whose voices are bang average. I’ve always thought Cheryl and Kimberley from Girls Aloud were noticeably weaker vocally than the other three, and Lisa Scott Lee in Steps is definitely not as good a vocalist as Claire and Faye.

That said, it’s all about the package and none of them are awful.

I's hard to answer this because not all pop starts are singers as such, even though they sing.

Of the ones that are supposed to be singers, I guess someone like Madonna might count.I think her singing is very heavily engineered.

You could also argue that singers like Adele who muck up their voices, while they sound great when young, aren't "great" singers. But then you'd have to include people like Robert Plant or Joni Mitchell.
