Loved that film

Hugh Grant also brilliant as Jeremy Thorpe in A Very British Scandal.

CarterBeatsTheDevil · 15/12/2024 09:35

There are some British actors whose range I admire and quite a few of them are named here, which just goes to show that we're all very different in what we see and appreciate 🤣 - David Tennant, Michael Sheen, Ben Whishaw, Olivia Coleman, Katherine Parkinson, Jodie Whittaker, Jodie Comer.

But I don't really care if an actor is one-note, as long as they do that note well and I enjoy the film or play they're in. Miscasting isn't the actor's fault unless they're also directing.

Reverend Obadiah Slope? Sir Alexander Dane aka "Dr Lazarus"? Severus Snape (the only reason I bothered with the HP films was that he and Jason Isaacs were in them).

His voice. Just wait for his line in this (Emma Watson was good too).

Agree with Olivia Colman, she is awful so why so sought after? I remember reading an interview with her when she was doing The Crown, admitting that she hadn’t put any effort into portraying the Queens mannerism/accent. That was obvious to anyone watching. Her performance was woeful after seeing how brilliant Claire Foy was. She should never play anyone that is known (in living memory) to anyone again. She is just herself in everything.

She was absolutely awful as the Queen. The contrast with the wonderful Claire Foy was night and day. She said she was uncomfortable in the role and it showed. I reckon she only got the role because she's Olivia Colman.

Helena Bonham Carter was also disappointing in 'The Crown'. She's another who just plays a variation of herself over and over. In her case, eccentric posh lady. Vanessa Kirby, by contrast, was absolutely splendid.

Dominic Cumberbatch -can't watch anything with him in

Benedict Cumberbatch? Or Dominic West?

The former is brilliant. He’s often unrecognisable, e.g in The Power of the Dog and Eric.

CarterBeatsTheDevil · 15/12/2024 09:43

I am really glad I didn't watch The Crown as it sounds as if a lot of otherwise excellent actors didn't do brilliantly in it.

I love Dianne Wiest. She's amazing in everything but her turn in I Care A Lot is a particular delight.

Phoebefail · 15/12/2024 09:46

@Catsmere Thanks for correcting me, Aged brain not warmed through yet.
Was Helena Bon Cart in the thing set in Venice, Victorian Con tricksters, Lonesome. . . something? A famous author like Henry James.
On the topic of one note actors: I like Bill Nighy being Bill Nighy.

I think The Crown was better in the first two series when it had mostly relatively unknown actors. Matt Smith was probably the only one well-known to the general public, and probably the worst of the main roles.

In subsequent series they miscast a lot of roles just because they seemed to want to get whatever big name, age appropriate actor was available.

Catsmere · 15/12/2024 09:49

A feeling I know all too well! 😆

I'm reading your username and smiling because my cat is Phoebe. However she's not currently typing anything ...

I think the only thing I've seen Bill Nighy in was series 3 of Auf Wiedersehen, Pet. Played Jeffrey Grainger, a complete slimeball ex-con ex-politician (was he based on Jeffrey Archer? I don't know enough about Archer to say). Don't know if it was good acting or just playing to type as a horrible, conceited, artificial shit.

Yes, both leads were excellent. Love Ben Whishaw too

Emma Watson was OK in Little Women and surprisingly good in The Perks of Being a Wallflower, which she apparently came close to an Oscar nomination for. I don't think she acts anymore, though.

She's studying at Oxford.

She's fine in HP too.

Watson is a huge name so the comments are skewed. That and being a TRA is a big no no on here.

A crap actor would be Tommy Wiseau.

She was appalling in Mary Poppins. One of the worst castings I've ever seen with Lin-Manuel Miranda. Ruined something that should have been magical. Her accent was terrible.

Also Andie McDowell, Emma Watson, Daniel Radcliffe and Nicola Watson for all the reasons given by PPs.

I loved Mary Poppins returns. Has a few of my faves in it. EM, LMM & Ben Whishaw

TheKeatingFive · 15/12/2024 10:04

Ah no, Watson was awful in Little Women. Saoirse Ronan and Florence Pugh acted her out off the screen. I have not seen Perks of Being a Wallflower, so can't comment on that.

FeegleFrenzy · 15/12/2024 10:08

@WhimsicalGubbins76 emily blunt isn’t nice. Friend of mine was an extra in a film with her and said she was horrible

BrotherViolence · 15/12/2024 10:10

People are lumping in Daniel Radcliffe (and Rupert Grint) with Emma Watson but Radcliffe has worked a lot on expanding his range since the Harry Potter days. He's done weird indie films, musicals, all kinds of genres and roles and was recently pretty funny as Weird Al. I don't think he's a naturally Oscar winning performer but I don't think he's terrible compared to a lot of the other people mentioned either. Emma Watson has as far as I know only ever played herself, and has been the weakest link in basically everything I've seen her in. I would call that genuinely bad. She also seems to have left acting behind and moved onto other interests, which fair play to her.

PinkiOcelot · 15/12/2024 10:10

jill halfpenny. Even her genuine geordie accent sounds false.

TheKeatingFive · 15/12/2024 10:13

I agree that Radcliffe has been pretty good in lots of other things. I think he was miscast in HP (despite looking the part). He never really got to grips with Harry's personality.

izzywizzydizzy · 15/12/2024 10:14

Most of the actors that played James Bond were terrible in their own ways. Both in the bond films and in a lot of their other work. About the best actor among them was Timothy Dalton, but ironically he wasn't terribly good as Bond as he played it with a bit too much warmth and humanity. Connery and Moore were particularly woeful. Slimy Pierce not much better as Bond though he's done some better stuff elsewhere.

I’m actually really glad to hear this 🤣 makes me feel vindicated. Whenever I see her face, I always recall that interview she did where she mentioned a waitresses weight.

TH has, allegedly, had a lot of long running affairs but is very successful at getting the media to ignore them

anna maxwell Martin is dreadful - don’t know what it is but couldn’t watch her in the mum thing and DS and I struggled with her in ludwig

Oh I love her! She was wonderfully sinister in line of duty

Phoebefail · 15/12/2024 10:18

@Catsmere Bill Nighy was in "Best Marigold Hotel" and I saw him in "Turks&Caicos", a Spy Thriller with Helena Bon-Cart.
He is also Charles Parish on radio, V Good imo.
HelenaBon Cart was nominated for Bafta for Wings of the Dove. Based on Henry Janes novelGood but bloody wordy. But it would be if Henry James!
She was good a Miss Havisham

Yep, loved her in that. And she's perfection as Julia in Motherland.

Anna Max Mart was OK in Bletchly Circle and I am watching her in Bleak House.

I think the Rock and Keanu Reeves have a lot of charisma on screen which is secondary to their acting ability. It doesn't really matter whether they can act or not.

Remember the Rock in his WWF days and he was so captivating on the mic. In terms of charisma in front of an audience Freddie Mercury on stage is the only other performer who could compare to him.

Reeves is great in specific roles. Speed he is superb in. Point Break is another. Bill & Ted suited him too. Playing Jonathan Harker in Bram Stoker's Dracula, with his terrible English accent, and having Anthony Hopkins and Gary Oldman starring opposite him, that was a mistake that showed up his limitations.
