DP has given me the man flu he’s been suffering with all week. I wish I’d been more sympathetic now, it’s bloody horrible! Can’t remember feeling this bad for years.

Symptoms are:

Yesterday, managed to go to work, my chest felt like it was on fire all day and I had a dry cough. By the end of the day I was feeling very achy and dizzy. Had a bath and tried to warm up, but the chills were awful. Managed to get some sleep with the help of corvona for the coughing.

Woke up today with a fever, and feeling really achy, weak and feeble. Any attempt to move, to go to the toilet etc is accompanied by dramatic moans. Still feel very dizzy. And now back to having chills again. Also been coughing up a lot of yellow grim stuff today.

Does this sound familiar to anyone? Haven’t been ill for ages and got so much on the next couple of weeks in the run up to Christmas, I’m hoping it’s not going to last until then 🤞.

What are you taking for it? I've got similar but it's bearable with regular paracetamol.

scoutingfortwirls · 14/12/2024 17:48

We had this s couple of weeks ago. The vaccinated member of the family didn't get ill which made me think it was flu. Who knows. It lingers for a while.

Petrasings · 14/12/2024 17:49

My dh and dd had this. Dd lost her smell and taste, so it’s definitely Covid for us - the new strain XEC.
Dd couldn’t stand properly.
It takes a few weeks to recover.

Petrasings · 14/12/2024 17:49

Day and night nurse works well.

WolfFleece · 17/12/2024 19:13

Day 5 now and I’m getting worse not better. Had a temperature and sweats for most of the time since Friday, and my chest feels awful. Loads of coughing, no strength in my body at all, I get dizzy when I try to stand up. Day nurse is doing bugger all but night nurse is at least knocking me out at night.

Did you manage to do a covid test?

Duchess379 · 17/12/2024 19:25

That sounds utterly dreadful. I'm going down with a cold & have a bit of a sore throat but that's it.
Wishing you a speedy recovery. Have you tried cold & flu tablets?! 🥺🎄

thechampselysee · 17/12/2024 19:28

I had something similar without the chest symptoms and it was the flu. I couldn't get out of bed for three days, had a fever for seven. For two days I got dizzy and threw up just from watching tv. Now I am just fatigued. No one else in the house was as sick as me, they all just had cold symptoms for a couple of days. Given your chest symptoms I suggest you see a GP or similar to rule out a chest infection, pneumonia etc particularly as you are getting worse and not better.

WolfFleece · 17/12/2024 19:30

I haven’t done a Covid test mainly because I haven’t had any change to my taste or smell, which I’ve had every time I’ve had Covid. So I feel pretty confident it’s not that, it’s a bit irrelevant anyway as I’m not able to leave the house.

Cold and flu capsules, day nurse, lemsip, been rotating through them all and none of them seem to help at all.

Everything really aches too, and I have no appetite at all.

Namechangefordaughterevasion · 17/12/2024 19:31

I've had it for 10 days. Tested and it's not Covid. Coming out the other side now but still so much mucus!

That sounds awful and exactly what we all had. It ended up being Influenza A, the nastier strain of Flu. There seems to be a lot about at the moment and it’s a really bad dose. I am pregnant so ended up having to go to Hospital to make sure the baby was ok as my temperature was over 39 degrees. Keep an eye on your heart rate if you can, when I was assessed I had a resting heart rate of around 115 that didn’t go down at all over the course of a few hours. Worst dose any of us in the family have ever had, made covid seem like a mild headcold. We’re over a week in now and feeling a lot better but still weak. Hope you get better soon x

Sunhatweather · 17/12/2024 19:32

Sounds awful, OP 💐

IMustDoMoreExercise · 17/12/2024 19:32

I'm not a doctor but could it be pneumonia. I know a couple of people who have had it recently.

WolfFleece · 17/12/2024 19:33

@thechampselysee yeah pretty sure this is flu, I wouldn’t call it a cold because the one thing I’m missing is snot! Did a lot of sneezing for a few days but still no snot. I tried phoning GP today but gave up after half an hour on hold. I’ll try again tomorrow if I’m no better.

Sorry to hear you were so bad too, yes I’ve had Covid 4 times and that was a walk in the park compared to this! I feel like if I was 90 and I got this I’d pretty likely not survive it x

yes it's awful isn't it, like nothing else I had before. I hope you feel better soon.

Oh god so I might only be half way 😞. The most annoying thing is I’m self employed and I’ve missed out on so much money this week, just when I thought I’d survive Christmas with my finances looking ok.

I would also second what @thechampselysee said, worth getting your chest checked out. I was put on antibiotics as although it’s a viral illness I did develop a productive cough with quite a bit of phlegm indicating a chest infection and it’d be good to make sure your dose didn’t develop into a chest infection/pneumonia

I’m on day 6. Just been given codeine at the doctors. Works surprisingly well to suppress this exhausting cough.

Not to be used for a productive cough (ie, if you have yellow phlegm).

But for everyone else. Apparently over the counter 8mg codiene and 500 paracetamol is the way to go.

I'm not a doctor but could it be pneumonia. I know a couple of people who have had it recently.

Just googled the symptoms and yes I do tick every one of the boxes. But it says contact doctor if you’ve had a cough for 3 or more weeks, so I guess they won’t want to see me yet?

Had something similar for getting on 2 weeks now. I feel better in myself but still have a cough. I woke up sweating and my pillows were soaking, not long later I was freezing. I've been dizzy. Headaches.

We have had people at work test positive for covid and one guy off with some kind of virus, the rest of us started after him.

I have 30mg codeine on prescription for my back which I’ve been taking at night, it’s the only thing which cuts the mustard with the body aches. But maybe I shouldn’t be taking it as I have been coughing stuff up, I didn’t know that 🤔

My fit and healthy 30yo colleague ended up in A&E with pneumonia a few weeks ago. She was really ill. Take care of yourself and try to get medical advice if it's not improving.

MaggieBsBoat · 17/12/2024 19:44

I’m on day 4. Getting worse. Not Covid, I tested. So miserable bloody flu.
Also codeine is the only thing touching it.

GettingStuffed · 17/12/2024 19:50

I had it for about 4 days but then I've had both flu and covid vaccination. DH was ill for weeks and is just left with a cough.

For some reason DS didn't get it at all. Neither DSiL and DGS don't get these types of illness either whilst DD is floored. Apparently people with high neanderthal genes are immune to cold & flu viruses
