To not want to drop my hours when DS starts school?

mindyourfingersplease · 14/12/2024 15:48

But I think I’ll have to.

I am currently part time with two days off a week. I’d like to keep this as I have a younger child.

My younger child’s nursery starts at 730. I’d have to drop her then at this time. Then get to DS school for beakfast club to start at 8. This gives me twenty five minutes to get to work myself, through heavy morning traffic. DH can’t help: he leaves for work at 7.

I think typing that out has made me realise I’ll have to drop my hours.

Will your husband contribute to a pension for you? It’s not just about now. It’s about your future.

Can you start work a little later?

Barrenfieldoffucks · 14/12/2024 16:21

Not if you were working 4 days and paying for 4 days, but shorter days so you can drop off first.

I’m not sure why you’ve posted, OP. People have given the usual suggestions and you’ve shot them down.

childminder, nanny, your DH. That’s it.

Probably because the usual answers are obvious so probably ones OP has already thought of and dismissed before posting on Mumsnet.

so because you’re daughter is settled at a nursery she will be at for a short period of time

you will jack in a job?

At no point has she said she will quit, your earlier post is ridiculous putting words in her mouth, what the fuck is your problem?

she can’t drop hours

says that she can’t even be 5 mins late

critical that starts on time

Right, so I drop three hours (half a day) so I start an hour later on my working days, meaning I work two and a half rather than three days. That’s not ‘jacking in.’ If you don’t understand that I can’t really help any further.

Do you share money OP because if you can’t have any flexibility and are having to do this for him surely you should be

t. I have to start on time. I can’t just be five or ten minutes late.

why don’t you speak to manager and suggest 15 mins later start and 15 mins more at the end of the day?
mor you can’t start 5 mins late but you can an hour late?

mindyourfingersplease · 14/12/2024 16:32

Than my start time.

If my start time is 825, that’s when I need to be there. If I adjust it to 925, that’s also when I need to be there.

This makes the most sense and is what most people would do.

Yeah I did that.

Could you start half an hour later and shorten your lunch break so that you work the same number of hours?

Do that then for 4 days?

so it’s reducing hours by very very little? we’re talking half hour?

SaagAloopa · 14/12/2024 16:34

mindyourfingersplease · 14/12/2024 16:21

The reason I don’t want to do that while DD is below school age is because I do value the time I have with her. If it came to it I’d rather have two days a week with her than drop a day. (Plus nursery costs would be higher if I’m paying for four days but only working three.)

You could value 1 day too though and have more relaxed mornings

DandySnail · 14/12/2024 16:35

the school is one you drive to rather than walk?

TrippTover · 14/12/2024 16:38

DandySnail · 14/12/2024 16:35

I often drive to school that’s 2 roads away…… because I’m going on somewhere, and if I had to walk back to get the car, I would then be late.

OP I’d start at 9:30 and then get DH to change his end time so he can do pickup, from after school club if necessary.

mindyourfingersplease · 14/12/2024 16:40

This thread 😂

@DandySnail if I request to start an hour later three times a week that is three hours, or half a day. Not half an hour.

The school is not in walking distance; no school is.

@SaagAloopa eventually we will. The next years are precious though, twee as that sounds.

@Delphiniumandlupins i teach so unfortunately I can’t do that. If I drop half a day and I’ll have to I think, it’ll be starting an hour later three times a week so I miss first period basically.

OP posts:
BigCarMistake · 14/12/2024 16:41

All of these threads (about the nightmare of juggling childcare) should be shared with young women to allow them to understand how horrific it is trying to juggle work and childcare in the UK today. The birth rate would probably drop even further but we may then finally get some décent childcare provision, instead of the assumption that women will pick up the slack by dropping hours and sacrificing careers and financial indépendence.

by why does it have to be an hour late!

how long will it take you in traffic to get from school to work. You said you had 25 mins so how much more?

DandySnail · 14/12/2024 16:47

you teach?? sort of relevant Op 😆

starting late isn’t possible then

mindyourfingersplease · 14/12/2024 16:47

It is difficult. I do get that if you live in a fairly densely populated area and have a choice of schools and childminders and the school has wraparound care you might not be able to relate, but if you live rurally it’s different. I chose to live here though I suppose!

Well yeah - I did say clearly I couldn’t start late!

OP posts:
cantkeepawayforever · 14/12/2024 16:48

I thought it might be teaching - presumably secondary, as for Primary there is no option to start late (and tbh nobody arrives as late as 8.25 - 8am would be about the latest feasible).

I used to drive in one direction to drop my dcs off with a childminder prepared to open very early to do breakfasts (she also did the school run), then drive manically to school to arrive at 8 am for my own class.

What subject do you teach? Could you move your job to a school closer to your dc’s? Or move your children to nursery / school close to your school?
