sitting in costa coffee

Went to costa coffee ordered drinks, sandwiches & cake. Myself & partner said we will eat in rather than take away. Place was full most seats were taken apart from a four seater table where some woman was sat. I asked if the seats on her table were taken and she said we can not sit on her table as she is with her DS.
In the end a chinese couple offered their seats and we eventually got a seat.
AIBU expecting a seat on womans table for me and my partner as no one was sat in them?

I'm obviously a very nice person as would say 'hey, no problem' -

People go on a train to get from A-B. And even when someone buys a ticket, they are not owed a seat. I have had to miss trains because there was no space.
People go to cafes for all sorts of reasons. If there is no space, you can go elsewhere.

They are both public places.

If there's space at your table, then that space is fair game.

If you don't like that, then don't go to a cafe, or go when it's quieter.

You see, that argument works both ways!

A cafe is a not a public place. It is a private business.

Here we can laugh but in real life that aggression is not pretty.

I love these threads! They basically contain the arguments and bitchy comments that people would like to have in the café when these situations arise, but are too polite/anxious to.

When I find myself (usually as a single customer) in @IveGotToGoToMeDads 's position I smile and sit down in an empty seat regardless of who else is at the table. No one has told me off yet.

And how I’ve laughed when a family of 3 wanted to join me and DH on our table for 4.

No I don't just engage in essential experiences but if I am doing something for pleasure I do my best not to do it at the expense of someone else's enjoyment. Plenty of people would not want to bother having a coffee in a cafe if it means sitting with strangers so there is no way I would impose myself.

If the cafe tells you to vacate a seat or to leave the cafe then you have to do what they say.

If a person on their own has found a table then they don't need to find a less busy cafe because they have already found one with a free table.

Yes, but the owner / manager of the cafe has the right to refuse service and ask people to leave.
