To Refuse To Stream ?

Jumell · 11/12/2024 16:58

I don’t watch Netflix, Amazon TV or anything like that .

I’d rather we go back to the main 3 channels and have programmes along the same vein we had in the 80s

Terry and June
2 Ronnies
Fine Romance

etc etc and have programmes like Blue Peter and Jackanory on in the early evenings rather than the pointlessness of pointless !!

I do admit I do watch clips of old programmes on YouTube, I have watched BBCiPlayer, and also the ITV and Channel 5 equivalent internet catch up platforms .

ok admission - I did download the Netflix app and watch a bit of it in the past but have deleted it now and haven’t touched it for the past 2 years

so in short I admit I’m not a streaming virgin - I’m guilty as charged !

but should we just go back to the main 3 channels and have QUALITY programs on them -like Morcambe & Wise/Cannon & Ball etc!

I mean shall we just get some stones and try to dam this stream ?

in an ideal world literally the ONLY thing that would be streaming would be my eyes 🙌 🤣

Well I don't know why you feel you need others to stop doing what they enjoy?

Don't want to stream, no one is making you.

Watch those crappy repeats if you want

Snorlaxo · 11/12/2024 17:03

Watch what you fancy. 🤷‍♀️

Reading between the lines it sounds like you object to programmes for overseas in which case you’re missing out on some fab content.

SoNiceToComeHomeTo · 11/12/2024 17:05

Not at all unreasonable. Why do something you don't like? The old sitcoms and so on are available on DVD if you can't find the ones you want on terrestrial TV.

TimeAndTideAndButteredEggsWaitForNoMan · 11/12/2024 17:06

Jumell, you seem terribly nostalgic for the years of your (our) youth. Is there something significant missing from your life now that leads to this constant harking back to the comfort of your childhood? You’re within a couple of years of my age and although there are some things about the modern world which I think are less than positive, in general, I think having the tech and possibilities we have now is a positive thing. And I just don’t engage with those things with which I don’t agree. I had a lovely 70s and 80s, but I don’t want to go back there.

There’s nothing working with you choosing only to watch three channels of TV and not having streaming services, if you don’t like the other channels and platforms available. I am sure there are plenty of others like you. But you clearly enjoy the social interactions which the internet has made possible, going by your very frequent postings here, so I don’t think you feel modern tech and its possibilities are all bad.

Edited to add - I think you have terrible taste in comedy: all those shows are awful in my view. I enjoy being able to watch the comedy I love on the other platforms. My idea of comedy heaven is not broad, innuendo based sitcom of the 70s - it was often racist, always sexist and aimed at the lowest common denominator. But vive la difference!

I know admittedly I’ve always been a stickler for British TV even as a kid it did enjoy Chips and Taxi - and Diffrent Strokes

I only watch Netflix, Amazon and Disney +. There’s no way I’ll pay for a TV licence again, especially if only that sort of program is being shown. Each to their own.

Pendeer · 11/12/2024 17:09

There is a lot of choice these days from steaming platforms including those original 3 channels we grew up with. Some things we have watched as a family have been absolutely epic from Sky and Netflix.

Also with peri meno brain I forget things easily so being able to watch an entire series without having to wait a week in between is brilliant.

I think the best thing about this modern world is the ability to pause and rewind parts of a programme, skip adverts, find clips like Four Candles and show your children via YouTube, Also to find any piece of music you want not what is playing on the radio at this moment or digging through your vinyl collection. Some random record your Dad had or Relax by Frankie and tell them this was banned or The Doors getting in trouble for lyrics.

TickingAlongNicely · 11/12/2024 17:13

With On Demand.... you just watch what you want to watch, when you want to watch it.

Like a massive VCR.

So you could watch all your old stuff, and let other people watch their sport,or crime drama, or comedies, or quiz shows...

Reveny · 11/12/2024 17:13

Good choice! We had access to Netflix for about 5 years (sister's account) and never bothered with it. Then somehow a switch flicked in our brains and we started streaming.

It is impossible to go back. Can't watch normal telly now, can't find anything to watch on multiple streaming platforms, then when I do i spend hours bingeing.

Save your brain!

Edited

Yes there is something missing from my life now

however I admit I cheat . I DO watch things outside the main 3 channels - especially the Top of the Pops repeats on BBC4 on a Friday

To name another - I have watched quite a lot of Superstore on ITV2 and Ibiza/Magaluf Weekender - my guilty pleasure

so I admit I’m hypocritical - I don’t just watch the 3 main channels

I also listen to a lot of internet radio

I don’t watch TV or streaming platforms. Not sure why!
When I’m at my sister’s place, I just flick through the hundreds of channels, & never actually find anything…

HPandthelastwish · 11/12/2024 17:17

@Jumell you do post some odd things. Live the life you want to buy if you did stream you could have all the old shows on UK Gold.

Going back to 3 channels is like saying we should just go back to only reading the Bible. Choice is there for everyone to make their own decisions. There are many amazing educational documentaries that can open your eyes to all sorts of subjects that you could never learn about on just 3 channels.

Acrossthemountains · 11/12/2024 17:20

Fuck no. The main channels are shite. Some of the best tv I've watched was only available on streaming services. You can do what you like.

Utsy · 11/12/2024 17:25

I’d hate that, I only stream, haven’t had live tv in years

5foot5 · 11/12/2024 17:25

I think your case is not helped by the fact you have chosen some dreadful old crap as examples!

I have some sympathy with your viewpoint in as much as I feel it is a shame that so much of the quality programmes seem to be only available on the streaming channels, whereas at one time you would expect them to be on the mainstream channels so your TV license would cover it.

Also, a point I read recently, it seems to take much longer for the streamers to decide whether or not to commission a new series as they have to wait longer to determine how successful it is. When the BBC, say, show a new series, they know fairly quickly what sort of viewing figures it has and can typically get a second or subsequent series out the following year. With streamers it is not uncommon for there to be a 3 year gap between series so by the time the next series comes out you can't remember what the hell happened. Or, like in Stranger Things, the actors have grown up and changed a lot.

We are just coming round to streaming as we have changed Internet provider and are now getting a much better service for considerably less, do decided we can justify the expenditure. However we plan to dip in and out - subscribe to each for a month or two only to watch what we fancy then ditch it and try another.

We currently have AppleTV for the brilliant "Slow Horses" but now we have finished that we will probably cancel.

It does seem a shame something as good as that is not on a mainstream channel.

mondaytosunday · 11/12/2024 17:27

Why? There are some excellent shows on the many platforms. I rarely watch the 'main' (surely no longer true) channels. Certainly not as things are broadcast.
But if terrestrial TV is what you enjoy go ahead.

Jumell · 11/12/2024 17:30

Meant to say I love Dave .

Dave is good in a Saturday night - especially the excellent Not Going Out and the quiz shows like Mock The Week repeats

AgnesX · 11/12/2024 17:33

Time has moved on and so have people's tastes. It was simpler back then ( although there was equally enough crap in a different way).

Less adverts wouldn't be bad though.

Jumell · 11/12/2024 17:35

I also like Ice Cold Killers on the True Crime channels etc so I fully admit to watching other channels not just main 3 ! The more I think about it the more I watch

Now TV has a load of old programs on - haven't spotted the two ronnies, but they have porridge and open all hours etc.

sdds15 · 11/12/2024 17:56

yabu in the sense that you miss out on some great quality shows on these streaming platforms but

yanbu in the sense that youdo need to put a limit somewhere. I only have netflix, there's plenty enough that I don't need add other platforms as well. I'd get streaming overload and get stuck for choice.

I'm doing something similar though in that I've deleted amazon and shopping apps such as h&m and zara, etsy etc in a conscious choice to stop buying stuff I like but can live without really or else can find in a local shop or, if I want more quality, I can find at my nearest tkmaxx. I'm sure Besos will cope just fine but I like to think it will not be with my money.

hellohellooo · 11/12/2024 17:58

OP I'm the opposite
We have no t v aerial so we can only stream

It's been 18 months and I miss clicking my tv on and seeing something to watch immediately

stillthinkdaft · 11/12/2024 17:59

is it just you at home OP?

if so, do what the heck you like

I don't have any paid-for platforms, on the grounds I don't have much spare time to watch TV anyway, but I do stream via iPlayer, ITVx, All4 and so on, though I don't see that as very different from setting the video recorder.

I don't care what others do, though. And even I we went back, I want BBC1, BBC2, ITV, C4 & C5, not just the first 3. But I like BBC4 and Sky Arts at times.
