This is the 18 year old lad who had a holiday romance with a 17 year old girl in Dubai. She was just short of 18.

The authorities were purposefully duplicitous. They recorded the boy as Pakistani so he would be more harshly treated.

As someone who is half Indian, I regret ever contributing to Dubai’s economy when I visited. I will never visit the ME again.

I hope the poor boy doesn’t have one stupid transgression effect him in the long term.

Bet some of the responses on here would be very different if it was an 18 year old girl with a 17 year old boy.

He was 18. On holiday with family. Of course he didn't check what the laws were on holiday romance. Nor would any of us at that age. He did something he knew to be legal in his own country so he probably didn't think twice about it.

Yes, 15 is under the age of consent but, contrary to what you appear to think (and apologies if I've misunderstood), a 16-year-old who has consensual sex with a 15-year-old will not be prosecuted, still less faced jail time. And no, a 16-year-old foreign boy having sex with a 15-year-old foreign girl would not lead to riots in the UK.

In Dubai, if you report a rape you are arrested for extramarital sex.

I read of one women who's male friend kissed her cheek goodbye in public (she didn't even consent to it) she was jailed for four months.

Absolute shocking, they’re almost openly admitting they treat certain nationalities appallingly. I feel sorry for their non-western migrant workers who don’t have wealth behind them.

No country is perfect I know but agreed- Dubai is off my list too and I’m encouraging friends and family not to go.

I have a friend - happens to be Black British - she wants to go and make some tax free income there. I know she’s struggling here as a single woman to pay her mortgages etc, but I’ve told her this isn’t the way. It’s up to her of course but I’ve advised against it.

I don’t know if this is true but I read on this thread his parents knew about it and they knew her parents didn’t approve but went along with it.

I know there’s only so much parents can do to control an 18 years old actions but personally (and they may well have done this tbf) I’d strongly advise my child to steer clear of any man/woman who would be too scared or ashamed to introduce them to his family for ANY reason. Whether it’s skin colour, religion, appearance, class related etc.

I feel sorry for his parents, they are likely not the most well travelled or worldly wise people. This was probably a dream trip they worked hard for and now it’s a nightmare. I’m sure they’re feeling a lot of guilt now.

Assuming it’s not a hoax and it is the correct name, the mother is gonna be feeling very foolish now. Her whole community will now know what she wanted to hide which was that her daughter had a holiday romance with a black teen. Not to mention the general backlash the family will receive.

You could say it's "baffling" that something could be legal in Spain but not legal in France even though there's only a metre difference between them, or "baffling" that it could be a certain time for person A in one time zone and an hour later for their partner standing next to them, or that something was legal the minute before a law was passed and illegal a second later. Or indeed that it would be illegal for someone to drink when they are 17 years, 51 weeks, 6 days, 23hrs and 59 minutes old but legal the next minute.

The line has to be drawn somewhere, and 18 is where it's drawn.

Nobody is going to argue that you don't magically becoming a sensible, mature, all knowing responsible individual the second you turn 18. I'm sure the average 17 years and 49 week year old and an 18 year and 3 month year old are far closer in maturity/life experience than the 18 year old to a 25 or 30 year old. That's why most countries have romeo and juliet laws or similar.

But if you're talking about legality, it doesn't matter whether they physically look like an adult, or whether they behave like an adult, or whether they are as mentally mature as an adult, or anything else. All that matters is if they are legally an adult, and in this case he was and she wasn't.
