This is the 18 year old lad who had a holiday romance with a 17 year old girl in Dubai. She was just short of 18.

her parents found out and reported him to the Dubai authorities before he returned home.

his poor parents aren’t well off and had to return home to work leaving him there.

he’s now been sentenced to 1 year in prison.

aibu to think this poor boy should never have been brought before court.

I 100% know a white boy did 1 year for same crime in Dubai.
white boy guity, 1 yr in jail for same crime, very similar circumstances where white girl parents reported him. They did not go the UK news to look for help as he was guilty. Did his time and moved on, you will not find his name in the news.

You have completely made this up.

I can hand on my heart say that had this been my daughter and I could see from talking to her about daft choices which could have dreadful consequences once we were home, while I may not be happy with her the last thing I would do is go to the trouble of alerting the Dubai authorities.

What can be gained from doing it especially if genuinely you didn't know until you get home?

Like many have said he's not 30 years old and clearly a sexual predator.

If what I read when this was first in the news is true the girl and her family are of a culture that has very strong views on pre marital sex I think it's probably fair to say that the majority of us don't share those views so of course we wouldn't act in such a dreadful way

@JHound - you are arguing with someone who just wants to get a rise. Their obtuse word twisting regarding the fact that they were the one to introduce the concept of respect into this argument tells you that alone. Save your energy for a more worthy opponent.

Oh I was sealioning - I know what there stance is and most importantly I know WHY their stance is. I just wanted to make them say it - which they more or less have.

😉

You have completely made this up.

100% not made up. You can probably google how often this happens in Dubai … this guy is NOT the first.

Don’t know why you would think that with all the expats in Dubai that none of the teens are getting caught & reported. A teen girl gets pregnant & goes to a doctor in country … she gets reported and the man (or teen) is in trouble.

Slooodie359 · 11/12/2024 18:59

Surely can read study guides.

Where do those come from as you can’t receive letters or parcels by post they have to be handed into the prison and the parents have no money to keep visiting

Books ( maybe the consulate will provide some ) have to be approved by the authorities which takes a lot of time

You are also assuming there is somewhere quiet and private to read but cells have an occupancy rate of between 8 to 30 people

The difference between this situation and jaywalking, as I'm sure you will appreciate, is that jaywalking doesn't carry a prison term. We aren't discussing some abstract technicality, we are talking about a young adult spending a year in a men's prison where no-one speaks his language. Something that some posters here seem to be hugely blasé about, but he's just a black boy they don't know, right?

I used the jaywalking example because it's something completely unknown to us in the UK. We wouldn't even think about it. I don't suppose anyone would consider they were breaking a law,but it can mean a fine in some jurisdictions.
There are lots of differences in laws according to the country you are in. It really is that simple. And ignorance of the law is not a defence.

What do you mean his parents aren't well off, they were well off to go on holiday to Dubai, it isn't Butlins?

I thought that too.

Tabbyandwhite · 11/12/2024 19:19

So he was an 18 year old adult male.

What he did was illegal in that country.

How did his parents afford a holiday in Dubai if they are poor, it's expensive there.

Oh he only got a year. Lesson learned I guess.

When have we rioted in the UK because two foreign teenagers, with a few months between them, had a consensual sexual relationship except one was 16 and the other a few months younger?

That said I agree the UAE authorities could not ignore their law being broken but I think them giving a 1 year sentence reflects what they feel about it (given he faced 20.)

The only villain in this story is the mother.

You have perhaps missed the point? According to "some" an "illegal immigrant who came off a "small boat" killed children in Southport. Instead of waiting for the truth - or anything approximating it, some British people took the law into their own hands and rioted, others took to social media to spread hate crime, and even this site wasn't immune. And their excuse was that Britain is too soft on "illegal" immigrants.

Amd I read enough threads on this site - plenty of people appalled by an 18 year old "man" with a 16 year old "child".

Just another excuse to bash "foreigners" for having laws we don't approve of.

Catofthesouth · 11/12/2024 19:22

He might have really upset the girl. She might have been in bits on the plane. How would her mum have known otherwise? I would not have told my mum about teenage indiscretions at 17. No way.

deeahgwitch · 11/12/2024 19:16

Just because you pull funds together for a family holiday does not mean you are wealthy enough to jet backward and forwards between Dubai and the UK. Nobody has any idea how long it took them to save for that.

That’s not what happened though. The facts of the case have been reported and the girl and guy were very happy together.

The mother found photos and messages on her daughter’s phone and hit the roof.

Her mum went through the daughters phone at home and found the messages between them.

Her mum was sneaking on her phone after they returned. There is no evidence the young woman was upset. Not at him anyway, but I guess her mother may have to wait decades for her to trust her again. If ever.

I am comparing like with like.

Not the mass murder of a bunch of kids.

But let’s keep analogies comparable. The actual comparison would be a 16 year old foreign boy having sex with a 15 year old foreign girl in the UK.

Do you genuinely think that would lead to riots?

Also to be clear most people here seem to be bashing the mother who is a British national.

The “foreigner bashing” is in your head but people are allowed to criticise things they think are unjust - even foreign laws. Or do you think that any overseas law should be beyond critique - no exceptions?

If you think it wouldn't you don't know what things are like now. 15 is under the age of consent. Full stop and no exceptions that the other person is only 16. Anger and hatred are becoming the norm. Facts no longer matter. After all, I wonder if mum would have cared so much if he wasn't black?

Dontlletmedownbruce · 11/12/2024 19:29

It's a horrible story. Hopefully he will be out in a year and will be able to move on, he will have the support of the British public behind him. Given what we know about the girls family I suspect her fate is significantly worse. The parents obviously believe they own her and her body

Ok yes you’re deluded.

I am positive his race prompted the mother’s behaviour and have said that openly. I just think your analogies are absurd.

I think there’s many reasons people in the West find many of the laws of that area draconian, often misogynistic and bigoted. But of course it’s up to those countries what rules they have. Why the hell anyone would want to set foot in a country where sharia courts that still flogs people and amputates limbs god only knows. But westerners should just leave them to it.

They amputate limbs in the UAE?

Currently on booking.com

I week in beach hotel for 3 people all inclusive flights and hotel £1250 ( next August)

There a sale on aswell where one week for three adults is less than £1000

I don’t think that’s expensive at all, another week is about £500 more.

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 11/12/2024 19:41

Can posters stop making ludicrous so-called comparisons to other huge age gaps?! You look a bit silly

3 months off the age of consent with a young man of that age is a universe away from a 13 year old and a 35 year old , for example

Prescottdanni123 · 11/12/2024 19:41

The girl's mother was English. If they had met and slept together over here, there would be naff all that she could do. She deliberately set out to ruin that young man's life out of spite because she was in a country where she could. He was originally looking at 20 years in prison I believe? That is the sentence she was probably hoping for. I don't normally wish for people to be named and shamed but put of me hopes her name gets leaked. The other half of me doesn't purely because of her daughter who is another innocent in this.
