Lighthearted 😁
Say you were arranging an event for Sunday 22nd of this month, would you say it was happening next Sunday?
I've always thought if a day you're referring to occurs during the week you're currently in, it's this 'insert day'. If it's for the week after, I'd say next 'insert day'. So in this example, I'd say the event was next Sunday. That's how many of my friends would understand it too. But I've noticed some people would say this Sunday would refer to the one just gone, not the Sunday of this week. And next Sunday would mean the Sunday of this week.
Is one wrong? Aibu or are both right? Which one would you say? 😁

“Sunday just gone”, followed by “this coming Sunday”, followed by “in two Sundays’ time” :)

Thatwouldbeme · 10/12/2024 18:41

I have no idea I always get it confused 😁

KrisAkabusi · 10/12/2024 18:42

No. Next Sunday is the 15th.

Fireplacestockings · 10/12/2024 18:45

Okay, so to you which Sunday would be classed as 'this Sunday'? @KrisAkabusi

Haha I'm fully prepared to be told I probably have no idea too 😅

This Sunday would be 15th and next Sunday would be 22nd!

Norder · 10/12/2024 18:48

No, this Sunday is the 15th, next Sunday is the 22nd.

Ablondiebutagoody · 10/12/2024 18:49

This Sunday is 15th. A week on Sunday is 22nd. Next Sunday is ambiguous and I would want clarification. These days I just state the date.

This Sunday would be 15th and next Sunday would be 22nd!

Edited

This is what I've always gone by too

I agree with you, this Sunday is the 15th and next Sunday is the 22nd

twentysevendresses · 10/12/2024 19:25

'This Sunday' (or 'This coming Sunday') is the 15th.

'Next Sunday' would also be 'the next Sunday to arrive' which would be the 15th, but is so ambiguous as to need clarification and should never be used! As can be seen from this thread...people would need clarification and some would think it meant this Sunday, others would think it meant a week on Sunday 🤯

You could of course say 'A week on Sunday' but why would you bother...people would only say, 'do you mean next Sunday or the one after' which might also be confusing, depending on how your own particular interpretation of 'next Sunday' goes!

So just say the date! Much easier and completely clear 👍🏻

KrisAkabusi · 10/12/2024 20:49

This Sunday is the 15th. Next Sunday = next Sunday coming, also the 15th.

Strawberrysaucee · 10/12/2024 20:52

Another one who uses this sunday to mean the 15th and next sunday to mean the 22nd.

Pandasnacks · 10/12/2024 20:52

Well the next Sunday we have is the 15th so it's ambiguous. If someone said to me next Sunday I'd ask them to clarify if they meant Sunday coming up or the one after.

This is what I've always gone by too

This is what I think but when I have conversation with my husband or family I always seem to be wrong. 🙃

dementedpixie · 10/12/2024 20:53

This/next Sunday is the15th
A week on Sunday is 22nd
2 weeks on Sunday is 29th

ThinWomansBrain · 10/12/2024 20:54

well you wouldn't be arranging to meet for lunch or whatever last Sunday.

I made arrangements to meet someone for lunch later in the month earlier today - I can't recall whether she said 'next' or whatever - but essentially "Friday ??? week, on 20th"
It's not hard.

Jagoda · 10/12/2024 20:54

This Sunday and next Sunday are the same thing!

Pumpkincozynights · 10/12/2024 20:56

This Sunday is the 15th so is next Sunday. The 22nd is a week on Sunday.
If I’m arranging something I always give the date and day.
For example come for dinner a week on Sunday, 22nd December so as to avoid confusion.

Fireplacestockings · 10/12/2024 21:21

@ThinWomansBrain well you wouldn't be arranging to meet for lunch or whatever last Sunday.

No of course not. But I've had it happen before where I've said something like "How about we do that this Sunday?" And the other person has said, "this Sunday was 2 days ago, you mean next Sunday?" 🤔

It's not hard.

And I know it's not hard, I do use dates when I arrange things, I never said I didn't 🙈.. But I was asking to hear people's opinion on those particular terms. And it's interesting that there is a bit of a variety going on.

I would say as of today ‘a week on Sunday’ or ‘not this Sunday coming but the next’

Iloveyoubut · 10/12/2024 21:32

Jagoda · 10/12/2024 20:54

This Sunday and next Sunday are the same thing!

No they’re not where I’m from. This Sunday is this one coming right now. Next Sunday is the one after THIS Sunday, because it’s next. So it’s not first. 😂

HolyPeaches · 10/12/2024 21:32

This Sunday - 15th

Next Sunday - 22nd

Iloveyoubut · 10/12/2024 21:46

HolyPeaches · 10/12/2024 21:32

This Sunday - 15th

Next Sunday - 22nd

It took me too many words to say that. But … this!

Fireplacestockings · 10/12/2024 21:52

Iloveyoubut · 10/12/2024 21:32

Yes that's how I see it too 😅it makes perfect sense to me, but clearly there's different takes on it! With you saying it's the same where you're from, I'm now wondering if there could be regional differences. Either way, glad it's not just me! 😄
