Lighthearted 😁
Say you were arranging an event for Sunday 22nd of this month, would you say it was happening next Sunday?
I've always thought if a day you're referring to occurs during the week you're currently in, it's this 'insert day'. If it's for the week after, I'd say next 'insert day'. So in this example, I'd say the event was next Sunday. That's how many of my friends would understand it too. But I've noticed some people would say this Sunday would refer to the one just gone, not the Sunday of this week. And next Sunday would mean the Sunday of this week.
Is one wrong? Aibu or are both right? Which one would you say? 😁

This Sunday and next Sunday are the same thing to me, logically. The next Sunday to occur is the 15th.

In your situation I would say ‘Sunday 22nd’ because it’s too confusing otherwise.

Last Sunday to me would be 2 Sundays ago though (1st). For the Sunday just gone id just say ‘on Sunday (we did X Y Z)’

This Sunday = 15th
Next Sunday =15th
Sunday week = 22nd

Whichis why I would say "next Sunday, 15th Dec"

gannett · 10/12/2024 22:17

"This Sunday" is definitely the 15th.

"Next Sunday" depends when in the week I'm saying it. If I said "next Sunday" on Friday 13th or Saturday 14th, I would mean Sunday 22nd. If I said "next Sunday" today, it would feel ambiguous even when I was saying it so I would add the date.

DazedAndConfused321 · 10/12/2024 22:34

This sunday- 15th
"Not this sunday, but the next"- 22nd

Never realised that's what I say, but it is!

crouchendtigerr · 10/12/2024 22:37

If it's people I know, it would be this Sunday. If I don't 8n is them I would just put the exact date to avoid confusion

Whatisityoucantface · 10/12/2024 22:41

I agree with you OP. This Sunday is 15th. Next Sunday is 22nd. Sunday just gone or last Sunday was 8th Sept. In fact if I was referring to ‘Sunday’ it would be this coming Sunday (15th). I have always been confused by this 😂

Nc546888 · 10/12/2024 22:44

Sunday just gone (obvious)

this Sunday (the Sunday coming up. 15th)

next Sunday (another way of saying the Sunday coming up. 15th)

the following Sunday (22nd)

the Sunday next week (22nd)
