Just found a bottle of Baileys best before October 2024 - is it safe to drink?!

Last year my mum poured me a Baileys. Thought it tasted a little.... odd.
Checked the bottle - 2019 Envy

There's a bit of a difference between once month old and four years old!

AyrshireTryer · 08/12/2024 16:52

Get it down yer neck.

Pickingmyselfup · 08/12/2024 16:54

Definitely, I had some years out of date (probably sealed based on the fact that nobody died or threw up) I seem to recall it had curdled a bit but nobody seemed to notice it was an issue. I wasn't a regular baileys drinker so didn't even notice it was different.

I'm impressed you have some at all tbh!

Marblesbackagain · 08/12/2024 14:14

It's dairy based I wouldn't chance it

It's not fresh dairy. It is long-life-pickled-by-alcohol dairy!

pinkroses79 · 08/12/2024 17:16

You will quickly know if it's off - it curdles and will go lumpy and horrible.

JiminaSlump · 08/12/2024 17:17

Bailey's is the cockroach of the alcohol world. Come the nuclear holocaust, the amoebas and other surviving organisms will all be off their tits on delicious creamy beige.

vickylou78 · 08/12/2024 17:20

If its a best before it'll be absolutely fine.

Obbydoo · 08/12/2024 17:20

Drink it and enjoy it. If it kills you, at least you'll die happy. 🤣

Eetzup · 08/12/2024 17:29

This thread just reminded me that there was a bottle in the drinks cupboard - opened and BBE Aug 2024.

I can assure you it's completely fine - thanks for the reminder OP! 😁

Bjorkdidit · 08/12/2024 17:35

We had an open bottle in our fridge for about 5 years once. One day I decided to finish it. It was absolutely fine.

A few weeks past the BBE date is nothing.

Actual cream with that use by date would probably not have gone off yet, let alone cream mixed with alcohol and sugar.

I don't care about the alcohol. Having once ending up in a&E with food poisoning from it I would steer clear.

It won’t last long 😝

🤣🤣🤣🍹🍹🍹🍹🍹

Fedupoftheshits · 08/12/2024 18:19

This is what's on Bailey's website

Out of date Baileys
ApolloandDaphne · 08/12/2024 18:32

I would drink it!

DelilahBucket · 08/12/2024 18:44

It's a best before date not a use by date. You will of course have to consume a couple of decent servings just to be sure it hasn't lost its optimum taste. Do come back and let us know, if you're not dead of course 😁

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 08/12/2024 18:45

I've been drinking from a bottle of Bailey's and didn't even think to check the date. I'm fine. I'll let you know how out of date it is once DC are in bed.

BMW6 · 08/12/2024 18:49

Add a measure of brandy, just to be on the safe side.......

BadgersGalore · 08/12/2024 16:45

Urgh I was served an out of date Baileys in a posh pub once - it was curdled and thick and tasted revolting 🤢

And that is precisely that reason that I know Baileys can go off! But that was us at home - probably the following Xmas. But not good in a pub! I hope they replaced with a complimentary glass/mug/jug!

Pinkissmart · 08/12/2024 19:44

SalviaDivinorum · 08/12/2024 14:17

It’s BB not use by and it’s barely out of date

As long as it was unopened it’s probably fine

This

Passthecake30 · 08/12/2024 19:45

I was given that one that had bbe sept 24, I tried it in Sept, it was SO strong, like the very last dregs, it was undrinkable and even my dp who is much less fussy couldn’t drink it. So I’d say probably not drinkable!

socialdilemmawhattodo · 08/12/2024 19:45

Bailey's is the cockroach of the alcohol world. Come the nuclear holocaust, the amoebas and other surviving organisms will all be off their tits on delicious creamy beige.

I love cockroach stories. I believe firmly that kale is the cockroach of the vegetable world. Nothing makes it edible! You could cook it for 500 hundred years - still would need to chew indefinitely! Sorry I digress. But yes probably Baileys is the equivalent in the creamy alcohol world.

Aintnobodygottime · 08/12/2024 19:48

We’ve had bottles go on for years and never had it go off on us. I have no idea what date the current bottle has on it. I did once have some Sheridans that went off which was utterly grim.

samarrange · 08/12/2024 19:52

"Best Before" just means "If it's no good after this date, don't write in and complain". But even if it says "Use By"/"Consume By", there's always a margin.

Whatever the wording, if you buy a product which typically has a year of shelf life on it, then it's designed to still be completely fine after 12 months of being stored in relatively adverse conditions (for example, on a shelf in a shop), which means that if it's been at the back of a cupboard in the dark it will last for quite a bit longer than that. An unopened bottle of Bailey's has a shelf life of 2 years so it really isn't going to be in any way different just a couple of months after that time expires.

Best Before/Sell By/etc dates are a good idea in principle, but they do sometimes lead to unwarranted anxiety. Very few products turn into silent killers even if you consume them after double the period between manufacture and the date. The worst that will happen is that it doesn't taste very nice. But some people would say that applies to even the freshest bottle of Bailey's, ha ha.

(Of course, the alcohol in Bailey's is a poison to your central nervous system and liver, which is guaranteed to do you harm. As is the glass of wine that I am drinking while writing this. 🤷‍♂️)

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 08/12/2024 19:52

Just checked and the bottle I've been drinking from is best before November 2018. It's been in a cool dark place but not refrigerated. It tastes fine.

user2848502016 · 08/12/2024 19:55

Yeah it'll be fine (as long as it looks and tastes ok obvs)
